A study of shame from sexual abuse within the context of a Norwegian incest center.

Working with those who have experienced sexual abuse is a complicated matter because such abuse not only involves the violation of the victim's body, but it often generates shame in those involved. This article is based on empirical data from 26 hours of videotaped focus group interviews with 19 adult men and women in a Norwegian incest center who spoke openly of the shame they experienced from sexual abuse as children, parents, and employees. Findings from this study show that shame from sexual abuse can be grouped into seven major categories: (a) family, (b) emotions, (c) body, (d) food, (e)…

The relation between abuse and violent delinquency: the conversion of shame to blame in juvenile offenders.

OBJECTIVE: While the relationship between abusive parenting and violent delinquency has been well established, the cognitive and emotional processes by which this occurs remain relatively unidentified. The objective of this work is to apply a conceptual model linking abusive parenting to the conversion of shame into blaming others and therefore to violent delinquency. METHODS: A retrospective study of 112 adolescents (90 male; 22 female; ages 12-19 years; M=15.6; SD=1.4) who were incarcerated in a juvenile detention facility pending criminal charges, completed measures of exposure to abusive …

Self-conscious emotions and depression: rumination explains why shame but not guilt is maladaptive.

Feelings of shame and guilt are factors associated with depression. However, studies simultaneously investigating shame and guilt suggest that only shame has a strong unique effect, although it is not yet clear which psychological processes cause shame and not shame-free guilt to be related to depression. The authors hypothesized that shame, in contrast to guilt, elicits rumination, which then leads to depression. Therefore, in this study we investigated event-related shame and guilt, event-related rumination, and depression among 149 mothers and fathers following family breakup due to marital…

PTSD symptoms, suicidal ideation, and suicidal risk among university students: The role of shame.

OBJECTIVE: Suicide is a major public health concern and the third leading cause of death for people aged 15-24. In recent years, suicidal ideation and behaviors among university students have increased. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a well-established factor related to suicidal ideation, behaviors, and risk across populations. It is important to understand cognitive-affective mechanisms related to the association of PTSD and suicidal ideation to inform evidence-based prevention and intervention efforts. Shame, defined as an intense negative emotion involving feelings of inferiority, …

Shame, tonic immobility, and reactions to stressful events as phylogenetically conserved submissive defense mechanisms.

Shame, tonic immobility, and passive reactions to stressful events are phylogenetically conserved, obligatory, submissive defense reactions. Behavior, biology, genetics, evolutionary theories, and theories of humans as ultra-social animals are integrated to expand the understanding of these defense reactions in ways that are missing from current theories. In Study 1, 445 undergraduates selected the event that caused them the most shame, the event that produced their greatest inability to move or speak, and the stressful event that bothered them the most. Event-specific measures included the se…

Borderline personality disorder and self-conscious affect: Too much shame but not enough guilt?

Shame has emerged as a particularly relevant emotion to the maintenance and exacerbation of borderline personality disorder (BPD) features; however, little attention has been paid to the potentially differing effects of other forms of self-conscious affect. While guilt has been demonstrated to have adaptive functions in the social psychology literature, it has not been previously explored whether a lack of socially adaptive guilt might also contribute to BPD-related dysfunction. The present study examined the relationship between BPD features and self-conscious emotions in a sample of undergra…

Shame over tooth loss: between psychological suffering and structural inequality in Chilean oral health.

The article analyzes how tooth loss among older adults is not merely a clinical issue but a social and emotional phenomenon marked by shame, stigma, and structural inequality in oral health in Chile. From a qualitative, narrative approach with a descriptive scope and a hermeneutic (interpretive) orientation, 12 interviews were conducted in the commune of Cerro Navia, in the Metropolitan Region of Chile, between August and September 2024. The narratives reveal that tooth loss affects self-esteem, identity, and social participation. Shame manifests in behaviors such as covering the mouth, avoidi…

Evaluating the indirect effect of child maltreatment on trait aggression through shame coping styles.

OBJECTIVE: The pathway from childhood maltreatment to aggression is complex, with preliminary research identifying that the shame coping styles of Attack Other and Withdrawal may mediate this relationship. Using a cross-sectional research design, the aim of this study is to further investigate the influence of shame coping styles on the relationship between childhood maltreatment and trait aggression and whether this relationship differs by gender. METHOD: A panel sample of 430 Australian participants (53% female, Mage = 45 years) completed an anonymous online survey measuring participant dem…

Acute shame in response to dissociative detachment: evidence from non-clinical and traumatised samples.

Two studies employed a dissociative detachment induction technique to examine if experiences of dissociation increased acute shame feelings. Study 1 recruited college participants, while Study 2 enlisted adults attending treatment for childhood sexual abuse. Two hypotheses were explored: (1) more shame would be reported following a dissociative detachment induction than a relaxation induction; and (2) shame would increase when detachment was induced in the relationship context of a close other than when alone. Study 1 (N = 81) effectively induced detachment and participants reported higher sha…

The relations between childhood maltreatment, shame, guilt, depression and suicidal ideation in inpatient adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies demonstrated positive relations between various forms of maltreatment and suicidal ideation in youth; however, mechanisms underlying these relationships are not well understood. We propose that the experience of maltreatment in childhood may lead to high levels of generalized guilt and shame, resulting in an increase of depressive symptoms and suicidal thoughts in adolescents. The aim of the current study was to test our model of relations between these constructs using path analysis. METHODS: 112 inpatient adolescents aged 12-17 years completed the Childhood Trau…

The Moderating Roles of Forgiveness and Blaming Others in the Relationship Between Shame-Proneness and Depression for Adults.

Recent research has identified that shame can contribute to depressive symptomology. Considering the harmful effects of clinical and subclinical depression on emotional well-being and long-term health, it is critical to consider protective factors. Thus, the purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between shame-proneness and depression, exploring the moderating roles of forgiveness and blaming others. In a sample of 1,275 adults (ages 18-77, 58.5% female), this cross-sectional study used self-report measures including the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-21), the Test of Sel…

Single and Multiple Sexual Victimizations, Post-Traumatic Guilt, Shame, and Belief in a Just World.

Importantly, we found that the more victims believed in a just world, the less they reported shame and guilt following sexual assault, attempted rape, and rape. However, the magnitude of the association was very small. These results suggest that core assumptions of BJW are lower among individuals who experienced sexual violence, with repeated sex …

Compassion Focused Therapy to Address Shame and Guilt: A Case Study of a Client With Complex PTSD.

This paper presents the case of "Ava" a woman in her late 40s diagnosed with ICD-11 Complex Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD), whose life was shaped by chronic childhood abuse, pervasive shame, and intense self-criticism. Ava struggled with intrusive trauma memories, relational hypervigilance, fears of compassion, and enduring guilt regarding the impact of past substance misuse on her children. A phased Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) approach was implemented to address her chronic threat state (persistent hypervigilance and relational alarm) and facilitate a shift from shame-based self-a…

Shame and its impacts beyond the west: A mixed-methods study of Japanese medical students.

INTRODUCTION: Shame is a deeply uncomfortable self-conscious emotion that can influence learning and identity. Empirical evidence on shame in health professions education is largely derived from Western contexts. We aimed to examine the prevalence of shame experiences among Japanese medical students, their associations with key outcomes, and the contextual meanings. METHODS: From November to December 2025, we conducted a nationwide, cross-sectional, convergent mixed-methods study across eight medical schools. Shame frequency was assessed with an online survey using the Shame Frequency Questio…

Shame, dissociative seizures and their correlation among traumatised female Yazidi with experience of sexual violence.

BACKGROUND: Survivors of Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) captivity are at high risk of developing mental disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). AIMS: This study looks at the correlation between sexual abuse, shame, somatoform or bodily distress disorders, and dissociative seizures (psychogenic non-epileptic seizures). METHOD: The psychological effects of traumatic events and dissociative seizure were assessed in Yazidi women who were held captive by ISIS in Northern Iraq between 2014 and 2018. These effects were examined comparing 64 women who were held captive and s…

From childhood emotional maltreatment to depressive symptoms in adulthood: The roles of self-compassion and shame.

BACKGROUND: Emotional abuse is a form of maltreatment that most strongly predicts adult depressive symptoms in community samples. Introject theories suggest that some depressive symptoms stem from survivors having learned to treat themselves the way they were treated by their perpetrators. OBJECTIVE: Malevolent introjects may undermine self-compassion, which may subsequently maintain feelings of shame. Thus, we hypothesized that self-compassion and shame would mediate the path from retrospective reports of maltreatment to concurrent depressive symptoms in adulthood. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING:…

" Blaming, shaming, humiliation": Stigmatising medical interactions among people with non-epileptic seizures.

Background: People with non-epileptic seizures (NES) describe challenging relationships with health professionals, and explain negative interactions as common and expected. Despite these difficulties, little is known about how people with NES experience difficult healthcare encounters. Methods: Using a thematic discourse analysis approach, we analysed the free-text survey responses of 135 people with NES and asked: what kind of challenges do people living with this condition encounter when interacting with health professionals, and how do they experience the consequences of difficult interacti

Schemas and modes in borderline personality disorder: The mistrustful, shameful, angry, impulsive, and unhappy child.

In this study we investigated how early maladaptive schemas and schema modes uniquely characterize Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) patients versus comparison groups. BPD patients (n = 101) were systematically matched with personality disordered patients without BPD (n = 101) and healthy controls (n = 101). Differences were investigated using one-way ANOVA and multinomial logistic regression analyses. Results indicated that schemas of Mistrust/Abuse and Defectiveness/Shame along with modes of Angry Child, Impulsive Child, and (low) Happy Child uniquely differentiated BPD patients from pat…

The 16-year course of shame and its risk factors in patients with borderline personality disorder.

The current study had two aims. The first was to examine the course of shame over 16 years of prospective follow-up among borderline patients and axis II comparison subjects. The second was to determine risk factors associated with feelings of shame among borderline patients. A total of 290 borderline inpatients and 72 axis II comparison subjects were assessed using a series of semi-structured interviews and self-report measures at baseline, and 87% of surviving patients were reassessed at eight waves of follow-up. Borderline patients reported significantly higher levels (2.6 times) of shame (…
