Shoulder and elbow injuries in NCAA football players, 2009-2010 through 2013-2014.

Background: Although football is one of the most popular collegiate sports, the epidemiology of and risk factors for shoulder and elbow injuries in this population not been recently described. We aimed to characterize this incidence in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) football players, determine risk factors, and establish outcomes after injury. Methods: All shoulder and elbow injuries in men's football occurring during the 2009-2010 through 2013-2014 academic years were retrospectively identified in the NCAA Injury Surveillance Program database. The injury incidence per 10,000

Risk of bursitis and other injuries and dysfunctions of the shoulder following vaccinations.

While vaccination injection site adverse reactions are usually mild and transient in nature, several cases of bursitis and other shoulder injuries have been reported in the medical literature. However, these lesions are not included in vaccine label inserts. To identify the characteristics of post-vaccination shoulder injuries and those of patients and involved vaccines, as well as their potential causes, a systematic review of the cases of vaccination-related bursitis and other shoulder injuries reported in the literature and notified to the Spanish Pharmacovigilance System database (FEDRA) h…

Outcomes of full-thickness articular cartilage injuries of the shoulder treated with microfracture.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether microfracture provides pain relief and improves shoulder function in patients with chondral defects of the glenohumeral joint. METHODS: Microfracture was performed in glenohumeral joints with full-thickness chondral lesions. Concomitant procedures were performed as indicated. Patients aged 60 years or older and those with complete rotator cuff tears were excluded. We included 31 shoulders in 30 patients in this study. Included were 25 men and 5 women with a mean age of 43 years (range, 19 to 59 years). Of the 31 surgeries, 6 (19%) pr

Subcutaneous sterile water injections for chronic neck and shoulder pain following whiplash injuries.

In many cases of whiplash injury symptoms persist and do not respond to treatment. There is uncontrolled evidence to suggest that intracutaneous injections of sterile water might help. Since that route may be unacceptable to patients the subcutaneous route is used in the randomised trial reported here. 40 patients with whiplash syndrome, mean age 46 years (24-73) were given subcutaneous injections of 0.3-0.5 ml sterile water or saline over tender and trigger points in the neck and shoulder. A maximum of three treatments were given during the first two months of the study and the patients were

High-energy injuries, combined ligamentous injuries, and joint incongruity as predictors of postoperative shoulder dysfunction in AC joint dislocation surgery.

OBJECTIVE: To identify risk factors associated with postoperative shoulder joint dysfunction in patients who underwent surgical intervention for acromioclavicular (AC) joint dislocation, with the aim of enhancing preoperative counselling, surgical planning, and postoperative management to optimize functional outcomes. METHODS: Patients who underwent surgery for AC joint dislocation between January 2018 and January 2023 at a hospital orthopaedic centre were enrolled into this retrospective study. Inclusion criteria were patients aged ≥18 years with a documented AC joint dislocation who underwe

Periprosthetic Fractures Around Shoulder Arthroplasty: Tips and Tricks for Management of Challenging Injuries.

Periprosthetic fractures associated with shoulder arthroplasty are on the rise, which include humeral shaft fractures as well as scapular spine and acromion fractures. Although some of these fractures can be treated nonsurgically, surgery is indicated in certain situations. Because it is related to periprosthetic humeral shaft fractures, the Unified Classification System for Periprosthetic Fractures can be used to guide treatment. Type A fractures are stable and can be treated nonsurgically. Type B fractures at the tip of the stem have a high risk of failure with nonsurgical treatment, and ben

Shoulder Injuries Secondary to Proning: Sequelae of Long COVID Syndrome: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Prolonged proning is widely used in the management of severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), most notably during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although brachial plexus injuries are recognized complications, structural shoulder injuries remain rarely reported. CASE REPORT: We report a case of a patient who developed a glenoid fracture and persistent shoulder dysfunction following prolonged proning for COVID-19-related ARDS. Clinical assessment, radiological findings, and management strategies are detailed. DISCUSSION: This case highlights unique mechanical and physiological…

Epidemiology and specific features of shoulder injuries in patients affected by epileptic seizures.

PURPOSE: Epileptic seizures can cause multiple shoulder injuries, the most common of which are dislocations, recurrent instability, fractures, and isolated lesions of the rotator cuff. Currently, only limited literature exists which describes the frequency and types of lesions in cohorts of epileptic patients and the corresponding treatment outcome. This study aims to document the occurrence of shoulder lesions in patients affected by seizures and to provide detailed information on trauma dynamics, specific lesion characteristics and treatment complications. METHODS: All patients referring to…

Interrater reliability of physical examination tests in the acute phase of shoulder injuries.

BACKGROUND: The physical examination is one of the cornerstones of the diagnostic process in patients with acute shoulder injuries. The discriminative properties of a given examination test depend both on its validity and reliability. The aim of the present study was to assess the interrater reliability of 13 physical examination manoeuvres for acute rotator cuff tears in patients with acute soft tissue shoulder injuries. METHODS: In a large walk-in orthopaedic emergency department, 120 consecutive patients ≥40 years of age were included in a diagnostic study. Patients who had follow-up withi…

[Use of arthrosonography in the diagnosis of Tossy injuries of the shoulder joint].

In a pilot study specificity and sensibility of ultrasonics on Tossy III lesions were tested, and that in 20 cases of guaranteed intact acromioclavicular joints and 22 cases of radiologically diagnosed Tossy III lesions with a following operative control. Additionally in these 22 cases the contralateral acromioclavicular joints were also examined by ultrasonics. All examinations were registered on video tape. With it in a single blind test the exact diagnosis was made in all cases. The diagnosis was based on ultrasonic findings as visible instability, unevenness of the joint line, haematoma fo

Reverse shoulder arthroplasty in obstetric brachial plexus injury: our experience with shoulder motion analysis.

BACKGROUND: Obstetric brachial plexus injury (OBPI) is a weakening or paralysis of the upper arm caused by brachial plexus injury followed by a muscle paralysis with severe repercussions on the movement of the shoulder joint following a progressive glenohumeral joint deformity. This case series analyzes the clinical and radiological outcomes of reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) in OBPI patients with a follow-up of 2 years. MATERIALS AND METHODS: OBPI patients with secondary end-stage glenohumeral arthritis were enrolled in the study and they were treated with RSA. Patient demographics

Shoulder muscle imbalance as a risk factor for shoulder injury in elite badminton players: A prospective study.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the impact of preseason shoulder testing on the risk of significant shoulder injury (SSI) in elite badminton players. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTING: Secondary care, academic medical center. PARTICIPANTS: Nineteen elite badminton players (19.37 ± 4.79 years, n = 13 males). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: At preseason, they had shoulder examination tests including the table-to-acromion distance and the glenohumeral rotation range of motion. The glenohumeral internal rotation deficit (GIRD) was calculated. Isokinetic internal and external rotator shoulder muscle stren
