Differences between radioactive iodine-induced sialadenitis and chronic obstructive parotitis.

The purpose of this study was to clarify the differences in the diagnosis and treatment outcomes between radioactive iodine-induced sialadenitis (RAIS) and chronic obstructive parotitis (COP). The study cohort comprised 47 consecutive patients diagnosed with RAIS and 50 patients with COP. All patients were treated by interventional endoscopy. Clinical, sialography, and endoscopy characteristics and treatment outcomes were compared between the two groups. Compared with the COP group, the RAIS group included more females (male:female ratio 1:8.4 vs 1:2.1; P = 0.011) and had a younger onset age (

Sialographic Analysis of Radioiodine-Associated Chronic Sialadenitis.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To apply a novel sialography classification system to identify parotid and submandibular ductal findings following I-131 therapy and to assess correlates to dose and duration of symptoms. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective single-center case series. METHODS: Patients who underwent sialography between February 2008 and February 2019 after previously receiving I-131 treatment were identified via a retrospective chart review. Their sialograms were systematically evaluated and scored by applying the Iowa parotid sialogram scale to also include submandibular gland analysis. RESUL

Submandibular sialogram performed through a Wharton's duct fistula: technical adaptation of conventional technique.

We report a case of submandibular duct fistula in which a sialogram was performed through the fistulous opening after attempt of sialography through the Wharton's duct had failed. To our knowledge, this technical modification in obtaining a sialogram has not been described previously in scientific literature. Blunt-tipped needles and polythene catheters are commonly used for cannulation of the submandibular duct orifice for obtaining a sialogram. However, in this case, a larger gauge metallic cannula was employed to opacify the ductal system through the fistula.

A distinct radiologic perspective on parotid pleomorphic adenoma: sialo-CBCT case report.

BACKGROUND: Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most prevalent benign salivary gland tumor, manifesting predominantly in the parotid gland. The imaging techniques most frequently employed for diagnosis include ultrasonography (USG), computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Sialography is an interventional imaging technique that utilizes a positive contrast medium to illustrate the ductal anatomy of the parotid and submandibular glands. While there are studies in the literature demonstrating the sialography combined with cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in the diagnosis o

Cavernous hemangioma with large phlebolith of the parotid gland.

Hemangiomas are vascular anomalies characterized by increased proliferation and turnover of endothelial cells. Hemangiomas of the parotid region are relatively uncommon in adult population, and there are a few reports of hemangioma with large phlebolith within the parotid gland. We herein report a case of it. Sialography may be a useful investigation method in the evaluation of radiopaque lesions localized intraglandularly in the parotid area to rule out the sialolith. Cavernous hemangioma with phleboliths should be included in the differential diagnosis of a swelling in the mandibular area.

Aplasia of the submandibular gland. A case report.

A 34-year-old Japanese male had pain radiating from his right mandibular body to the temporal region. Computerized tomography was undertaken to examine his cerebral status. It eventually revealed the absence of the right submandibular gland, although the left submandibular gland was present. The corresponding space was occupied by a lymph node. Furthermore, sialography showed the existence of Wharton's duct only. The literature on this rare occurrence is reviewed and the significance to the patient discussed.

Detailed gross anatomic and sialographic characteristics of major salivary glands in water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis).

To clarify the detailed general architecture and topography of major salivary glands and demonstrate a fine anatomy of the ductal system of the glands in water buffaloes, we conducted gross anatomic and sialographic investigations of glands in 14 half heads from seven water buffaloes. The position of the mandibular gland, course of mandibular duct relative to monostomatic gland, a rostral extension of polystomatic gland, and site of origin of monostomatic duct in buffaloes essentially differed from those of various ruminants. The shape of the parotid and mandibular glands, and origin of their

A case of maternal subclinical Sjögren's syndrome associated with congenital heart block.

A case of subclinical Sjögren's syndrome was diagnosed when the patient delivered a baby with SSA antibody-positive congenital heart block (CHB). The mother had been asymptomatic throughout her life. The laboratory findings including sialography, lip biopsy, Schirmer's test and a Rose-Bengal test showed Sjögren's syndrome. Such an asymptomatic case is termed subclinical Sjögren's syndrome. Thus, it was important to investigate an asymptomatic mother who delivers a SSA antibody-positive CHB baby.

Neo-duct formation following iatrogenic parotid duct injury during aesthetic filler removal: A case report and review of management.

INTRODUCTION: Parotid duct injury is an uncommon but significant complication of facial aesthetic procedures, particularly with the rising prevalence of buccal fat removal, thread lifts, and permanent filler excision. Although iatrogenic parotid duct injury remains rare, recent literature suggests its incidence may be rising in parallel with the growing popularity of intraoral buccal fat pad excision in aesthetic surgery. Prompt diagnosis and appropriate management are essential to prevent chronic morbidity. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of iatrogenic parotid duct injury in a 40-year-o

Imaging of the salivary glands.

CT and MRI have greatly facilitated evaluation of pathology of the three pairs of major salivary glands and the hundreds of minor salivary glands. Imaging can frequently offer a specific histological diagnosis for benign and malignant neoplasms of the parotid, submandibular, and sublingual glands. Obstruction, infection, autoimmune processes, and congenital anomalies also are readily diagnosed. CT and MRI studies assess the anatomic extent of minor salivary gland neoplasms. Sialography continues to provide useful information about intrinsic abnormalities of the parotid and submandibular ducts.

Submandibular accessory salivary gland causing Warthin's duct obstruction.

BACKGROUND: Submandibular masses are mostly secondary to sialolithiasis. Salivary gland tumors should be considered in the differential diagnosis. In this case report, an unusual cause of Warthin's duct obstruction caused by an accessory salivary gland tissue is presented. METHODS: Sialography revealed the submandibular accessory salivary gland. RESULTS: Submandibular gland excision was performed and histopathologic investigation showed the accessory salivary tissue, which was narrowing the Warthin's duct. CONCLUSIONS: In cases of a symptomatic submandibular accessory gland, excision extirp

Sialolithiasis of an accessory parotid gland.

We report a case of sialolithiasis of an accessory parotid gland in the cheek demonstrated by computed tomography and sialography. The accessory parotid gland was located anterolateral to the masseter muscle and was isolated from the main parotid gland. The calculus developed from this accessory parotid gland, and the main parotid gland was free of sialolithiasis and inflammation. To our knowledge, this is the first report concerning sialolithiasis in an accessory parotid gland. The calculus was removed without facial nerve injury or salivary fistula via a peroral approach.

[Cysts and fistulas of the first branchial cleft with parotid symptomatology].

On the basis of two cases, one a fistula and the other a cyst of the first brachial cleft with chiefly parotid manifestations, a review of the embryology is given which explains the anatomical features. The elements in their clinical diagnosis, complemented by fistulography and sialography are compared with operative findings, the essential steps in which are as follows: 1) Identification of the facial nerve which by necessity overlies the lesions. 2) Partial resection of the superficial lobe of the parotid. 3) The essential resection of the external auditory meatus, the keystone of radical cu

Scintigraphic evaluation of sialadenitis.

Salivary gland scintigraphy using 99Tcm sodium pertechnetate and a 20-min dynamic data acquisition with a sialogogue at 10 min was employed as the primary imaging modality in sialadenitis in 32 patients. Paired asymptomatic glands within the study group were used to establish control values for a number of computer-derived functional parameters. The shape of the activity-time curve was described as: H = hyperactive, N = normal, M = median, S = sloped, F = flat, O = obstructed. Of seven patients who had ductal stones on plain films, two passed stones prior to sialography and had normal curves,

Primary amyloidosis with dry eyes and dry mouth--a case report.

We report a rare case of dry eyes and dry mouth caused by primary amyloidosis. A 66-year-old woman with keratoconjunctivitis sicca and xerostomia died of acute respiratory failure. Shirmer's test, gum test, and sialography indicated Sjögren's syndrome. Lip biopsy revealed amyloid deposition around the salivary ducts. Bence-Jones protein was noted in the urine. At autopsy, amyloid deposition was identified histochemically in many organs, mainly on the vessel walls. Primary amyloidosis should be considered as a differential diagnosis of Sjögren's syndrome.

Radiological evaluation of major salivary glands agenesis. A case report.

Congenital agenesis of major salivary glands is a rare entity with unclear etiopathogenesis, sometimes presenting in a bilateral form. This pathologic condition is often diagnosed with delay because of the poor clinical presentation. Only bilateral forms of parotid aplasia are responsible of such a severe lack of saliva causing dental caries, periodontal diseases, ascending sialadenitis and candidosis. In most cases, the aplasia involves more than a single major salivary gland and is occasionally associated with other developmental anomalies of the head-neck region. A case is presented in whic
