New insights into the chromosomes of stoneflies: I. Karyotype, C-banding and localization of ribosomal and telomeric DNA markers in Skwalacompacta (McLachlan, 1872) (Polyneoptera, Plecoptera, Perlodidae) from Siberia.

This study provides data on chromosome number (2n♂♀=26), sex determination mechanism (XY♂/XX♀), C-banding pattern, distribution of clusters of telomeric TTAGG repeats and 18S ribosomal DNA in the karyotype of the stonefly Skwalacompacta (McLachlan, 1872). For the first time in the history of stoneflies cytogenetics, we provide photos of the chromosomes of the Plecoptera insects. The karyotype of males and females of S.compacta consists of 12 pairs of autosomes. Three pairs of large autosomes and four pairs of medium-sized autosomes are subacrocentric. The remaining pairs of autosomes are small

Insight into the Natural History of Pathogenic Variant c.919-2A>G in the SLC26A4 Gene Involved in Hearing Loss: The Evidence for Its Common Origin in Southern Siberia (Russia).

Pathogenic variants in the SLC26A4 gene leading to nonsyndromic recessive deafness (DFNB4), or Pendred syndrome, are some of the most common causes of hearing loss worldwide. Earlier, we found a high proportion of SLC26A4-related hearing loss with prevailing pathogenic variant c.919-2A>G (69.3% among all mutated SLC26A4 alleles that have been identified) in Tuvinian patients belonging to the indigenous Turkic-speaking Siberian people living in the Tyva Republic (Southern Siberia, Russia), which implies a founder effect in the accumulation of c.919-2A>G in Tuvinians. To evaluate a possible comm

Comparative analysis of complete genome sequences of European subtype tick-borne encephalitis virus strains isolated from Ixodes persulcatus ticks, long-tailed ground squirrel (Spermophilus undulatus), and human blood in the Asian part of Russia.

Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is divided into three subtypes: European (TBEV-Eu), Siberian (TBEV-Sib), and Far Eastern (TBEV-FE) subtypes. The geographical range of TBEV-Eu dominates in Europe, but this subtype is present focally across the whole non-tropical forested Eurasian belt, through Russia to South Korea. However, the TBEV-Eu strains isolated outside Europe remain poorly characterized. In this study, full-genome sequences of eight TBEV-Eu isolates were determined. These strains were isolated from Ixodes persulcatus ticks, long-tailed ground squirrel (Spermophilus undulatus), and

[Age-related traits of cytogenetic abnormalities in synovial cells of knee-joint in residents of the North of Siberia with arthritis of different etiology depending on the GSTM1 gene polymorphism of glutathion-S-transferase.].

It was studied the frequency of cells with cytogenetic abnormalities in the synovial fluid cells of the knee joint in patients of different age groups suffering from chronic arthritis associated with Lyme borreliosis (CAALB) or post-traumatic arthritis (PTA), depending on the polymorphism of the GSTM1 gene of glutathione-S-transferase. The study included 135 residents of the north of the Tomsk and Tyumen regions, 68 of whom suffered from CAALB, and the rest of the 67 patients who made up the control group were diagnosed with PTA. The results of this study have demonstrated that there are signi

Association of Single-Nucleotide Polymorphisms Rs2779249 (chr17:26128581 C>A) and Rs rs2297518 (chr17: chr17:27769571 G>A) of the NOS2 Gene with Tension-Type Headache and Arterial Hypertension Overlap Syndrome in Eastern Siberia.

Inducible nitric oxide (NO) synthase (iNOS), encoded by the NOS2 gene, promotes the generation of high levels of NO to combat harmful environmental influences in a wide range of cells. iNOS can cause adverse effects, such as falling blood pressure, if overexpressed. Thus, according to some data, this enzyme is an important precursor of arterial hypertension (AH) and tension-type headache (TTH), which are the most common multifactorial diseases in adults. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association of rs2779249 (chr17:26128581 C>A) and rs2297518 (chr17: chr17:27769571 G>A) of t

[Risk factors in the development of hemoblastoses in the population of the Tomsk Region].

The Tomsk Region belongs to the areas of Siberia and the Far East which show a higher risk for hemoblastoses in the population. Chronic leukemia are prevalent in the structure of oncohematologic morbidity in the Tomsk Region as compared with other areas of Siberia and the Far East. There is a relationship of technogenic environmental pollution to the incidence of some nosological entities of hemoblastoses in the Region. Measures for environmental improvement are gaining in significant importance in the cancer-combating system.

Actinobacteria possessing antimicrobial and antioxidant activities isolated from the pollen of scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) grown on the Baikal shore.

Isolated ecosystems existing under specific environmental conditions have been shown to be promising sources of new strains of actinobacteria. The taiga forest of Baikal Siberia has not been well studied, and its actinobacterial population remains uncharacterized. The proximity between the huge water mass of Lake Baikal and high mountain ranges influences the structure and diversity of the plant world in Siberia. Here, we report the isolation of eighteen actinobacterial strains from male cones of Scots pine trees (Pinus sylvestris) growing on the shore of the ancient Lake Baikal in Siberia. In

Genetic diversity and geographical distribution of the Siberian subtype of the tick-borne encephalitis virus.

The tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV), a member of the Flaviviridae family, is currently subdivided into three main subtypes-the European (TBEV-Eu), the Far-Eastern (TBEV-FE), and the Siberian (TBEV-Sib). The TBEV-Sib is the most common subtype and found in all regions where TBEV was detected, except for Central and Western Europe. Currently, four genetic lineages have been described within TBEV-Sib. In this study, detailed analysis of TBEV-Sib genetic diversity, geographic distribution, phylogeography and divergence time of different TBEV-Sib genetic lineages based on E gene fragments, com

Factors Contributing to Anthrax Outbreaks in the Circumpolar North.

A 2016 outbreak of anthrax on the Yamal Peninsula in Siberia that led to the culling of more than two hundred thousand reindeer and killed one human, resulted in significant media interests and in the reporting was often linked to thawing permafrost and ultimately climate change. Here, we review the historic context of anthrax outbreaks in the circumpolar North and explore alternative explanations for the anthrax outbreak in Western Siberia. Further, we propose a convergence model where multiple factors likely contributed to the outbreak of anthrax, including an expanded population and discont

Phylogeography and taxonomic status of the Formica picea complex (Hymenoptera: Formicidae).

The black bog ant Formica picea complex is widespread from the Atlantic to the Pacific coasts of Eurasia. This complex was earlier believed to consist of one or two species (F. picea and F. candida). However, molecular analysis suggested that it includes three cryptic species. One is F. picea from Europe, another, F. candida, is currently known exclusively from Kyrgyzstan, while the third one, temporarily designated here as Formica sp., inhabits the easternmost part of Eurasia from China to Kamchatka. It is unknown how F. picea and Formica sp. are distributed in Siberia and whether their range

Opisthorchiasis in infant remains from the medieval Zeleniy Yar burial ground of XII-XIII centuries AD.

We present a paleoparasitological analysis of the medieval Zeleniy Yar burial ground of the XII-XII centuries AD located in the northern part of Western Siberia. Parasite eggs, identified as eggs of Opisthorchis felineus, were found in the samples from the pelvic area of a one year old infant buried at the site. Presence of these eggs in the soil samples from the infant's abdomen suggests that he/she was infected with opisthorchiasis and imply consumption of undercooked fish. Ethnographic records collected among the population of the northern part of Western Siberia reveal numerous cases of fe

[Structure of tick-borne encephalitis virus populations in foci with various levels of morbidity in the human population].

The results of comparative studies on the structure of viral populations by virulence for white mice inoculated by different routes as well as on the antigenic characteristics of virus strains in two foci of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) in Western Siberia differing significantly by the disease incidence rates among the human population and by the "risk of infection" indices are presented. The portion of virus strains with different virulence in the total number of strains (92) studied in both TBE foci under comparison did not differ significantly. Origin and distribution of tick-borne encephalitis virus strains of the Siberian subtype in the Middle Urals, the north-west of Russia and the Baltic countries.

Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) plays an important role in infectious human morbidity, particularly in Russia and the Middle Urals. The Siberian subtype of TBEV (S-TBEV) is dominant in the Middle Urals. Determining the origin of S-TBEV strains in this territory and also in the European part of Russia and the Baltic countries is very important for understanding the cause of its distribution. The surface glycoprotein E gene was partially sequenced in 165 S-TBEV isolates collected in the Middle Urals between 1966 and 2008. Nucleotide and amino acid sequence identity of the studied isolates i

Ups and downs of infections with the broad fish tapeworm Dibothriocephalus latus in Europe (Part II) and Asia from 1900 to 2020.

The broad fish tapeworm, Dibothriocephalus latus (Diphyllobothriidea), is the most important causative agent of diphyllobothriosis, a fish-borne zoonosis, in Europe. Part I of this review focused on the occurrence of D. latus in northwestern and central Europe, particularly in Fennoscandia, the Baltic, the Alpine lakes and Danube River regions during 1900-2020. Part II summarises data on D. latus from the European and Asian parts of Russia and from Asian countries. The tapeworm has occurred throughout Russia, with the most important foci in (i) the Republic of Karelia in the northwest of Europ

Geographical variability of Lepyronia coleoptrata (Linnaeus, 1758) (Hemiptera: Cercopoidea) across Russia.

Comparative analysis of body size, coloration, penis shape, and male calling signals of Lepyronia coleoptrata from different localities in European Russia, Northern Kazakhstan, Siberia, and the Russian Far East showed that all populations studied belong to the same species. A clear boundary between European and the Far-Eastern subspecies can only be drawn based on body size and proportions. Light coloration is typical of European populations; on the contrary, in the Far East only dark specimens occur, but in Siberia a mixture of different forms presents. Toxic metals and genetic polymorphism in indigenous populations of northern Asia and America.

The polymorphism of genes encoding enzymes involved in heavy metal metabolism was analyzed in indigenous Siberian populations based on the mercury, lead, and cadmium contents in the blood of Canadian Inuit carrying different genotypes. Additionally, we examined the polymorphism of genetic loci associated with sensitivity to arsenic exposure in indigenous Siberian populations using data on inorganic arsenic content in the urine of indigenous Andean populations who had consumed drinking water with elevated arsenic levels for thousands of years. A population genetic approach was used to seek gene
