Quasi-Periodic Porous Structures-Based Temperature and Pressure Dual-Mode Electronic Skin for Material Cognition.

It is of great significance to prepare a temperature and pressure (T-P) dual-mode electronic skin (DMES) with a controllable porous structure and use it to achieve material cognition. In this work, a quasi-periodic porous structure-based T-P DMES was proposed, exhibiting excellent performance in material cognition. The quasi-periodic porous structure of the electronic skin was prepared through the interaction of confined two-dimensional bubbles and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). After attaching graphene, PEDOT: PSS, and Bi2Te3 to the porous PDMS, the obtained electronic skin can precisely detect

Investigating Wearable Sensor Placement for Heat Risk Monitoring of Firefighters: A Skin-Ear Temperature Study.

In firefighting, heat stress is a significant physiological hazard that leads to an increased risk of heat-related illness. Heat-risk monitoring of core body temperature (CBT) can help identify early signs of heat strain and can be accomplished with wearable sensing technologies (WST). This study employs non-invasive temperature sensing to examine the relationship between tympanic temperature and skin temperature (ST) and across multiple on-body locations under different experimental conditions. This study was conducted with 10 healthy adults, male and female, under calm and non-calm condition…

The Fifth Main Dynamic Factor: Skin Temperature and Its Effects on EMG-Based Gesture Recognition.

Surface electromyography (sEMG) has become a cornerstone for gesture recognition in prosthetic control and human-machine interfaces. However, its performance is often compromised by several dynamic factors, including gesture intensity, limb position, electrode shift, and signal non-stationarities. This work introduces and investigates skin temperature as the "fifth" dynamic factor influencing sEMG-based gesture recognition. Synchronized sEMG, photoplethys-mography (PPG), and inertial measurement unit (IMU) data were recorded from 12 participants without limb differences performing five hand/wr…

Relation between skin temperature and muscle stiffness in masters athletes: Effect of specific training adaptation.

Aging process is correlated with negative changes in muscles properties such as their thermal responsiveness and stiffness. At the same time … n state and immediately after the race. Indoor sprint in Masters athletes did not cause significant skin temperature changes. Only assymetries were found for Biceps femoris muscle (left vs right before p = 0,0410; after p = 0,046). Gastrocnemius was the most responsive area for sprinting in terms of muscle stiffness. Some specific adaptations to sprint were found. …

Relationship between exercise-induced muscle soreness, pain thresholds, and skin temperature in men and women.

Infrared thermography (IRT) has gained popularity in sports medicine for determining whether changes in skin temperature relate to pain and muscle damage. Such a relationship would support IRT as a non-invasive method to monitor these physiological responses. However, the literature remains controversial. Here, we determine the relationship between exercise-induced muscle soreness (DOMS), pain, and skin temperature in men and women before and after exercise. Twenty-two physically active adults (10 men and 12 women) completed a squat exercise protocol to induce muscle damage. Skin temperature, …

Skin Temperature, Training Load, and Subjective Muscle Soreness in Junior Endurance Athletes: A Case Study.

CONTEXT: The application of infrared thermography to assess the effects of athletic training is increasing. It is not known if changes in skin temperature (Tsk) as assessed by infrared thermography are affected by the training load or the muscle soreness experienced by the athlete. PURPOSE: To describe the variations in Tsk in body areas affected by running training and examine any relationships with subjective ratings of muscle soreness. The secondary aim was to assess the feasibility of using infrared thermography for assessing training load in 2 junior male middle-distance athletes. METHO…

The second thoracic sympathetic ganglion determines palm skin temperature in patients with essential palmar hyperhidrosis.

Sympathectomy of the second (T2) and third (T3) thoracic ganglion is frequently performed for essential palmar hyperhidrosis and occasionally performed, in addition to stellectomy, for idiopathic Raynaud's disease. The increased palm skin temperature after the operation probably results from increased skin perfusion. To determine whether it was possible to limit the extent of sympathectomy for these patients, we recorded palm skin temperature after electric stimulation of stellate, T2 and T3 ganglia, and after randomized electrocautery of T2 and T3 ganglia in 20 patients. We analyzed the stati…

Circadian breast skin temperature rhythms: overt and occult benign and occult primary malignant breast disease.

Circadian variations of breast surface temperature have been measured in patients with overt or occult benign breast disease, or in those with occult breast cancer. Subjects were studied in a hospital ward environment well-controlled with respect to ambient temperature. Using manual techniques temperatures were recorded half-hourly for 96 hr from replicate sensors placed on quadrants of the left and right breasts inclusive of tumour areas and similar sites on the contralateral breast. Application of time series analysis failed to consistently demonstrate differences in values for the rhythm pa

Intrinsic Force-Temperature Self-Decoupling Enables Human-like Tactile Sensing in a Soft Ionic Skin.

Soft dual-modal tactile sensors capable of simultaneously sensing force and temperature are essential for enhancing human-like perception and interaction in robots, particularly in the functional sense of concurrent mechanical and thermal perception. However, achieving self-decoupled and high-fidelity dual-modal sensing remains a significant challenge due to intrinsic signal crosstalk, structural complexity, and limited flexibility in existing designs. Here, we present a soft robotic tactile (RoboTac) skin that intrinsically decouples force and temperature using an ionic conductive film within

Circadian patterns of heart rate, respiratory rate and skin temperature in hospitalized COVID-19 patients.

RATIONALE: Vital signs follow circadian patterns in both healthy volunteers and critically ill patients, which seem to be influenced by disease severity in the latter. In this study we explored the existence of circadian patterns in heart rate, respiratory rate and skin temperature of hospitalized COVID-19 patients, and aimed to explore differences in circadian rhythm amplitude during patient deterioration. METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of COVID-19 patients admitted to the general ward of a tertiary hospital between April 2020 and March 2021. Patients were continuously monitored…

[Correlation between sympathetic nervous activity of the skin and local temperature of skin projections of the spinal nerves in the course of rehabilitation of the patients presenting with dorsopathies].

We undertook the correlation analysis of the parameters characterizing the intensity of the skin sympathetic reactions and local temperature of skin projections of the spinal nerves in three groups of patients presenting with dorsopathies and differing in terms of sympathetic regulation of the microvasculature. It was shown that the patients of group 1 exhibited positive correlation between the above parameters (preserved vegetative regulation of microcirculation despite the tendency toward its atonic-stagnant disturbances). The patients of group 2 showed negative correlation between these par

Ingestion of Coffee Polyphenols Improves a Scaly Skin Surface and the Recovery Rate of Skin Temperature after Cold Stress: A Randomized, Controlled Trial.

Coffee polyphenols (CPPs) derived from coffee beans have beneficial effects on blood pressure and vascular endothelial function. In addition, CPPs suppress ultraviolet light induced erythema. However, the effects of CPPs on dry skin and cutaneous vascular function have not been clarified. We investigated the effects of CPPs on dry skin and the recovery rate (RR) of skin temperature after a cold-stress test as a measure of vascular function in subjects with visible scaliness in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized study. The subjects were divided into two groups, the CPP group and the…

Spinal cord injury impact on skin temperature regulation during graded exercise: metaheuristic data mining-based predictions.

People with spinal cord injury (SCI) show impaired thermoregulation during exercise, making skin temperature a noninvasive indicator. This study applies hybrid Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) models optimized with Ant Lion, Dragonfly, and Evolution Strategy algorithms to predict skin and core temperature dynamics during graded arm-crank exercise in 32 participants (16 SCI, 16 controls). The Dragonfly-optimized ELM achieved the highest accuracy (R² = 99.705, RMSE = 0.014) with no significant difference between predicted and measured core temperatures (p > 0.05). Feature-importance and SHAP analy…

Exploration of the associations between muscle oxygen saturation and skin temperature responses during isokinetic strength exercise.

Previous studies suggested that skin blood flow, and therefore skin temperature affect changes in muscle oxygenation (SmO2). Given that near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) measurements consider a depth of a few centimeters to capture changes in SmO2, in this study, we aimed to explore whether a relationship between skin temperature and SmO2 is observed after sets of isokinetic strength exercises. Seventeen males (age: 25 ± 6 years old and body mass: 74.7 ± 12.4 kg) completed five series of 30 maximum unilateral (preferred) knee extension isokinetic exercises at 180º·sec-1 with a 60-second rest b…
