Deprivation of sleep (DS) is widespread in modern societies and is associated with cardiometabolic, cognitive, and psychiatric disturbances. Acute DS has also been reported to produce short-lived improvements in mood in some individuals with depression, suggesting the involvement of specific biological mediators. Ghrelin, a stomach-derived peptide with central actions in hypothalamic and limbic circuits, has emerged as a candidate linking DS with alterations in sleep, circadian regulation, mood, and cognition. Both acylated and unacylated isoforms exhibit distinct biological activities, and ac…

Sleep-related metacognitions play a role in the etiology of insomnia and are distressing while falling asleep. Although similar concepts, such as thought suppression, have been studied in the context of dreaming, the relationship between sleep-related metacognitions and more negatively toned dreaming due to stressful pre-sleep experiences has yet to be studied. Overall, 919 patients with various sleep disorders completed the Metacognitions Questionnaire-Insomnia (MCQ-I20), Arousal Disposition Scale (APS), and Pre-Sleep Arousal Scale (PSAS) and kept a sleep diary over seven days eliciting dream…

The recent trend for legalization of medicinal cannabis and cannabinoid-containing products, together with their soporific effects, has led to a surge of interest of their potential therapeutic role in the management of some common sleep disorders, such as insomnia, sleep disordered breathing, and restless legs syndrome, and less common disorders such as narcolepsy and parasomnias. Although much of the pre-clinical and clinical data were derived from studies with relatively small sample sizes and limited by biases in assessment, and in clinical trials lack of allocation concealment, as a whole…

OBJECTIVE/BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbance is associated with suicidal thoughts and behaviors. The relationship of specific sleep disorders to suicide attempts is less well established. Whether treating sleep disorders reduces suicide attempts remains controversial.
METHODS: Suicide attempts, treatment utilization, and psychiatric diagnoses were extracted from electronic medical records and a suicide attempt database from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The sample (N = 60,102) consisted of patients with any record of suicide attempt in FY13-14 and a 1:1 case-control of patients with no …

Addictive drugs affect sleep both in individuals currently using drugs and in individuals who have withdrawn from drugs. In fact, sleep disturbances are reported by individuals for some drugs long after they have quit taking them and after other withdrawal symptoms have subsided. This suggests that addictive drugs and sleep share some of the same neurobiological mechanisms. Sleep researchers may be studying the neurobiology of addictive drugs without knowing it. The purpose of this survey is to summarize the effects that addictive drugs have on sleep and stages of sleep. We demonstrate that di…

Since World War II, Japan has achieved remarkable economic development and has become an advanced country. Particularly in the industrial field, a production system has been developed to reduce the loss of machining time by adopting a shiftwork in factories operating 24 hours a day, which contributes to the improvement of productivity. Nowadays, this shiftwork practice has spread from the industrial field to other businesses such as 24-hour entertainment facilities and convenience stores, which lead to sleep deprivation in Japanese society. Even at home, certain conditions adversely affect sle…

OBJECTIVE: To identify the determinants of excessive daytime sleepiness in adults with sleepwalking or sleep terrors (SW/ST).
METHODS: We collected the charts of all consecutive adult patients admitted from 2012 to 2014 for SW/ST. They had completed the Paris Arousal Disorders Severity Scale and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, and had undergone one (n = 34) or two consecutive (n = 124) nocturnal videopolysomnographies. The demographic, clinical, and sleep determinants of excessive daytime sleepiness (defined as an Epworth Sleepiness Scale score of greater than 10) were analyzed.
RESULTS: Almos…

BACKGROUND: Pediatric sleep disturbances are regularly diagnosed on the basis of parental reports. However, the impact of parental sleeping problems on parental perceptions and reports of their child's sleep has not yet been studied. We hypothesized that poor parental sleep decreases the parent-reported child sleep quality.
METHODS: A 1-week actigraph recording was performed in 100 children aged 2 to 6 years recruited in 16 day care centers. Their biological parents completed a sleep diary and a Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC) on children's sleep. The parents also completed the Je…

Sleep apnea has been recorded in many infants, but little data exist concerning the amount and range of apnea in infants. We studied 49 infants referred to the sleep disorders unit. Single polysomnographic studies were performed on each infant. We examined the amount of apnea, presence and amount of upper airway obstruction and the sleeping pattern in each infant. Central apnea was common to all infants and varied in amount. Upper airway obstruction, recorded as mixed apnea, was found in 36 infants. Twenty of these infants had only occasional mixed apnea ( < 2 apneas/hour), whereas 16 infants …

Daytime sleepiness is common in myotonic dystrophy and might be attributed to disturbed nocturnal breathing. Seventeen out of 22 patients complained of excessive daytime sleepiness, resembling "idiopathic hypersomnolence". Sleep apnoea might have contributed to daytime sleepiness in only three of 17 patients. Treatment with the central stimulant methylphenidate produced sustained benefit in seven out of 11 patients tested. Daytime sleepiness in myotonic dystrophy is usually caused by dysfunction of central sleep regulation and not by disturbed nocturnal breathing.

The multiple sleep latency test provides an objective measure of a patient's daytime sleepiness. Sixteen tests were performed at Groote Schuur Hospital in 1987 and 1988 according to a fixed protocol. In 8 patients the test was definitely abnormal (mean sleep latency less than 5 minutes) with 3 subjects diagnosed as having narcolepsy, 1 sleep apnoea syndrome, 1 idiopathic central nervous system hypersomnolence, 2 environment-related hypersomnolence and 1 psychophysiological hypersomnolence. In 2 patients the test results fell in the equivocal range (mean sleep latency 5-10 minutes), while in 5 …

A sleep apnea syndrome has been diagnosed in eight children (age range 5-14). Before undertaking therapeutic trials, sleep and respiration were extensively studied. Sleep and respiration were again analyzed 3 months after tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy (6 cases) or tracheostomy with insertion of valve (2 cases). Sleep induced apneic apisodes in these children who had normal respiration during wakefulness. Three types of apnea (central, upper airway, and mixed) were recorded in each case. The minimum number of apneas recorded during a single night was 75; the maximum was 816. Polygraphic monit…

This study assessed the extent to which sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), difficulty initiating and maintaining sleep (DIMS), and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) were associated with impairment of quality of life (QoL) using the SF-36. Participants (n=5,816; mean age=63 years; 52.5% women) were enrolled in the nation-wide population-based Sleep Heart Health Study (SHHS) implemented to investigate sleep-disordered breathing as a risk factor in the development of cardiovascular disease. Each transformed SF-36 scale was analyzed independently using multiple logistic regression analysis with sl…

OBJECTIVES: Household environmental factors and sleep hygiene may contribute to poor sleep health. We identified associations between household sleep environment (HHSE) and sleep health characteristics in White and Black adults.
METHODS: This study included cross-sectional data from the CARDIA sleep ancillary study at Year 35 (n=711). HHSE was assessed in two domains (sleep disruptors and sleep hygiene) using a questionnaire, and higher scores indicated more sleep disruptors or poorer sleep hygiene. Sleep outcomes included (1) self-reported sleep quality and daytime sleepiness and (2) actigra…

STUDY OBJECTIVES: There are large individual differences in the homeostatic response to sleep deprivation, as reflected in slow wave sleep (SWS) and electroencephalogram (EEG) spectral power, which have largely been left unexplained. Recent evidence suggests the possible involvement of the activity-regulated cytoskeleton-associated protein (ARC) gene. Here we assessed the effects of the "c.*742 + 58C > T non-coding single nucleotide polymorphism" of the human ARC gene (rs35900184) on sleep-physiological and waking-neurobehavioral responses to total sleep deprivation (TSD).
METHODS: N = 50 hea…

OBJECTIVES: The aim of our study was to evaluate the frequency of REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) in a mixed sleep laboratory population and to assess potential associations. Moreover, we investigated referral diagnoses of patients subsequently diagnosed with RBD and assessed the frequency of incidental RBD.
METHODS: Charts and polysomnographic reports of 703 consecutive patients comprising the full spectrum of ICSD-2 sleep disorders [501 males, 202 females; mean age, 51.0+/-14.1 years (range: 10-82 years)] were carefully reviewed. The vast majority of patients were adults (98.7%). Patients…
