Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is highly associated with the delayed sleep phase disorder, a circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorder, which is prevalent in 73-78% of children and adults with ADHD. Besides the delayed sleep phase disorder, various other sleep disorders accompany ADHD, both in children and in adults. ADHD is either the cause or the consequence of sleep disturbances, or they may have a shared etiological and genetic background. In this review, we present an overview of the current knowledge on the relationship between the circadian rhythm, sleep disorders, and ADHD.

Sleep disorders are highly relevant in clinical practice given their prevalence as well as their impact on health outcomes and quality of life. The most common concerns are excessive daytime sleepiness, insomnia, disordered breathing, and abnormal movements or behaviors during sleep. A detailed but targeted history is vital, particularly from the sleep partner/witness. In-laboratory sleep testing (polysomnography and multiple sleep latency test) remains vital in the diagnosis of certain sleep disorders (such as sleep-disordered breathing and central hypersomnia) and in specific populations (su

Sleepiness is a physiological function, and can be defined as increased propension to fall asleep. However, excessive sleepiness (ES) or hypersomnia refer to an abnormal increase in the probability to fall asleep, to take involuntary naps, or to have sleep atacks, when sleep is not desired. The main causes of excessive sleepiness is chronic sleep deprivation, sleep apnea syndrome, narcolepsy, movement disorders during sleep, circadian sleep disorders, use of drugs and medications, or idiopathic hypersomnia. Social, familial, work, and cognitive impairment are among the consequences of hypersom

Almost everyone has sleep problems from time to time, and often, simple nonpharmacologic interventions can improve sleep hygiene. When nonpharmacologic interventions fail, patients often request and may even require treatment with hypnotics. Insomnia is a heterogeneous disorder. Patients with insomnia may have trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking too early. Sleep disturbances are especially common in older people because of changes in sleep architecture. Though this population may benefit from hypnotics to improve sleep, these drugs increase the risk of polypharmacy, drug interact

The primary goal of this retrospective study was to assess parental report of current sleep disorders in school-aged attention deficit disorder (ADD) children, as well as recalled sleep problems from when the children were infants (0-12 months) and toddlers (1-3 years). Results of a sleep questionnaire completed by mothers of 48 ADD children and a comparison group of 30 patients with school problems indicate that ADD children were perceived to have significantly more sleep problems and that these problems had onset in infancy. Specific items in the questionnaire which were increased included l

Parasomnias are sleep disorders involving undesirable physical events or experiences occurring during sleep onset, while sleeping, or on arousal. They include non-rapid eye movement (REM) parasomnias (eg, confusional arousals, sleep terrors, sleepwalking) and REM-related parasomnias (eg, nightmare disorder, REM sleep behavior disorder, sleep paralysis). Notable among these is REM sleep behavior disorder, which is closely linked to neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson disease. Early detection of this disorder is essential because it often precedes the motor symptoms of neurodegenerati

OBJECTIVE: Insomnia is a prevalent, treatable comorbidity in adults with epilepsy (AWE). Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBTI) is the gold standard treatment for insomnia, but its effectiveness in AWE has not been extensively studied. We conducted a randomized, single-blind, controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness of computerized CBTI (cCBTI) using the Go! To SleepSM program on sleep-related outcomes in AWE and, for the first time, explored its effect on seizure control.
METHODS: AWE with moderate-to-severe insomnia were randomized to cCBTI or sleep hygiene education alone (

Adequate sleep is required for good physical and psychological health. Sleep disturbance is common and its prevalence increases with advancing age. Physiologically, sleep in elderly adults differs from that in younger adults, both in terms of quantity and quality. Sleep disturbance in old age may be associated with many physical and psychological conditions, and less commonly can occur as a primary disturbance. It must be distinguished from the understandable but unrealistic expectations of many elderly people that they will sleep for as long and as soundly as when they were younger. The evalu

Sleep disorders, both insomnia and hypersomnia, are commonly associated with various co-morbid conditions, including general medical and neurologic disorders, psychiatric illnesses, and secondary or symptomatic restless legs syndrome/periodic limb movements in sleep. Diagnosis of the co-morbidity is the first step in treatment, followed by an assessment of the sleep disturbance. This begins with a complete history and physical examination, followed by laboratory testing such as polysomnography, multiple sleep latency testing, and actigraphy. The treatment of sleep disorders caused by co-morbid

Persons experiencing homelessness in the United States experience significant barriers to self-care and personal hygiene, including limited access to clean showers, laundry and hand washing facilities. While the obstacles to personal hygiene associated with homelessness may increase risk of infectious disease, hygiene-related behaviors among people experiencing homelessness has received limited attention. We conducted a cross-sectional study of individuals experiencing homelessness in Boston, MA (n = 194) to identify hygiene-related self-care practices and risk factors for reduced hygiene in t

Narcolepsy is a chronic disorder characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness, cataplexy, and other auxiliary symptoms. An interview can ascertain specific symptomatology, whereas a polysomnogram can reveal distinct clinical features. The clinical and laboratory evaluation together enable an accurate diagnosis of narcolepsy. This diagnosis includes a wide spectrum of symptom combinations. Treatment of narcolepsy should include the empathic guidance of a sleep clinician, an emphasis on sleep hygiene, and in many cases pharmacotherapy.

IMPORTANCE: Chronic conditions often cause functional impairments in activities of daily living (ADLs) and rest and sleep, leading to decreased independence and self-efficacy.
OBJECTIVE: To aid occupational therapy practitioners in making informed decisions regarding self-management interventions to improve ADLs and rest and sleep for community-dwelling adults with chronic conditions.
DATA SOURCES: We identified literature published from 1995 to 2019 through searches of the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, CINAHL, and OTseeker. Study Selection and Data Collection:

BACKGROUND: A large number of psychological consequences including sleep health emerged during the 2019 Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Sleep patterns in toddlers are vulnerable to negative environmental exposures, however, very few studies on this topic have been published so far.
OBJECTIVES: In this paper, we aimed to investigate the sleep patterns and associated factors in toddlers from China confined at home in the context of COVID-19 pandemic.
METHODS: From April to November 2021, a convenience sample of 493 parents of young children aged (12-35 months) were surveyed from Fuzho

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine the extent to which Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) influences participant willingness to seek treatment for behavioral health conditions. We hypothesized that, relative to sleep hygiene control, CBT-I would be associated with increased willingness to seek treatment for alcohol use, depression, anxiety, PTSD, and chronic pain. Since all participants had insomnia, we also tested CBT-I effects on willingness to seek treatment for residual or future episodes of insomnia.
METHOD: Data were derived from a randomized controlled trial compa

Physiological sleep induction is a fragile phenomenon which may be altered by environmental factors and various somatic and psychiatric disorders. Therefore sleep induction disorder is a common component of different types of insomnia, including sleep-onset insomnia and to a lesser degree multiple awakenings insomnia and early morning awakening insomnia. The treatment of sleep induction disorders is difficult and requires a precise analysis of the disorder and its aetiological factors. Specific treatment of aetiological factors is more likely to be efficacious in the long term than pharmacolog

In this article, we advocate the need for better understanding and treatment of children exhibiting inattentive, hyperactive, impulsive behaviors, by in-depth questioning on sleepiness, sleep-disordered breathing or problematic behaviors at bedtime, during the night and upon awakening, as well as night-to-night sleep duration variability. The relationships between sleep and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are complex and are routinely overlooked by practitioners. Motricity and somnolence, the most consistent complaints and objectively measured sleep problems in children with AD

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Needlestick and sharp injuries (NSIs) are prevalent among registered nurses and nursing students. Although NSIs are a multifactorial phenomenon, the relationship between sleep problems and NSIs remains unclear. The aim of the present study was to examine the association between sleep-related problems and NSIs among nursing students.
METHODOLOGY: Cross-sectional study of n = 584 nursing students from two Ecuadorian universities. Sociodemographic and academic data as well as information on NSIs in the previous three months were obtained through an online questionnaire. Self-

Sleep disorders occur commonly in patients with epilepsy, and can be responsible for symptoms of daytime somnolence and also can contribute to the intractability of epilepsy. The most important aspect of treating sleep disorders, especially sleep apnea, is the recognition of the problem. In a busy clinical practice, symptoms of sleep disorders are frequently overlooked or mistaken. Whenever sleep disruption or excessive daytime somnolence is potentially problematic, the patient should be referred to a sleep specialist and, if indicated, diagnostic testing performed (usually polysomnography wit

Problem gambling and sleep difficulty threaten health. Using the basis of self-regulatory theory, potential mechanisms for these problems were investigated. Fifty-nine treatment-seeking gamblers completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (sleep difficulty), the Sleep Hygiene Index (negative sleep habits), the Problem Gambling Severity Index and measures of self-regulatory capacity and arousability with data entered into regression analyses. Results supported the relationship between problem gambling and greater sleep difficulty (β = .18, t = 3.22, p < .01). Self-regulatory capacity mediated
