Influence of Second-Hand Smoke and Prenatal Tobacco Smoke Exposure on Biomarkers, Genetics and Physiological Processes in Children-An Overview in Research Insights of the Last Few Years.

Children are commonly exposed to second-hand smoke (SHS) in the domestic environment or inside vehicles of smokers. Unfortunately, prenatal tobacco smoke (PTS) exposure is still common, too. SHS is hazardous to the health of smokers and non-smokers, but especially to that of children. SHS and PTS increase the risk for children to develop cancers and can trigger or worsen asthma and allergies, modulate the immune status, and is harmful to lung, heart and blood vessels. Smoking during pregnancy can cause pregnancy complications and poor birth outcomes as well as changes in the development of the

Constituents of "teabacco": A forensic analysis of cigarettes made from diverted nicotine replacement therapy lozenges in smoke-free prisons.

Following the implementation of prison smoke-free policies, there have been reports of prisoners creating substitute cigarettes made from nicotine replacement therapy patches or lozenges infused with tea leaves ("teabacco"). No studies have analyzed the chemical constituents of teabacco made from nicotine lozenges, so as to document any potential related health hazards. Teabacco samples were made by a participant who reported creating teabacco while incarcerated in a smoke-free prison in Queensland, Australia, and the process was video-recorded for replication in a laboratory. A simple linear

Online comments on smoking bans in psychiatric hospitals units.

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with mental health concerns are disproportionately affected by and suffer the negative consequences of tobacco use disorder, perhaps because smoking has historically been part of psychiatry's culture. In the early 1990s, psychiatric inpatient facilities were exempted from U.S. hospital smoking bans, in response to public outcry with national media attention. Almost 2 decades later, the current study characterizes online conversation about psychiatric hospital smoking bans. Previous commenting studies have demonstrated commenting's negativity, documenting the "nasty effec

Parents' Self-efficacy for Tobacco Exposure Protection and Smoking Abstinence Mediate Treatment Effects on Child Cotinine at 12-Month Follow-up: Mediation Results from the Kids Safe and Smokefree Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Compared with the general smoking population, low-income smokers face elevated challenges to success in evidence-based smoking cessation treatment. Moreover, their children bear increased disease burden. Understanding behavioral mechanisms related to successful reduction of child tobacco smoke exposure (TSE) could inform future smoking interventions in vulnerable, underserved populations. METHODS: Smoking parents were recruited from pediatric clinics in low-income communities and randomized into a multilevel intervention including a pediatric clinic intervention framed in best c

Community coalitions for smoke-free environments in Armenia and Georgia: A mixed methods analysis of coalition formation, implementation and perceived effectiveness.

Effective models for aligning public health and civil society at the local level have the potential to impact various global health issues, including tobacco. Georgia and Armenia Teams for Healthy Environments and Research (GATHER) is a collaboration between Armenia, Georgia and U.S. researchers involving a community randomized trial testing the impact of community coalitions to promote smoke-free policy adoption and compliance in various settings. Community Coalition Action Theory (CCAT) was used to guide and describe coalition formation, implementation and effectiveness. Mixed methods were u…

Stealth vaping and associated attitudes, perceptions, and control beliefs among US college students across four tobacco-free campuses.

OBJECTIVES: Stealth vaping gained popularity among college students in recent years. It may undermine the benefits introduced by tobacco-free policies. Yet, no studies have investigated attitude and belief factors associated with stealth vaping. The objective of the study was to explore the relationship between attitudes toward on-campus tobacco regulations, normative perceptions of stealth vaping behaviors, and control beliefs with on-campus stealth vaping among U.S. college students. METHODS: Participants from four large, public universities with policies prohibiting use of all forms of tob

Views of prison staff in Scotland on the potential benefits and risks of e-cigarettes in smoke-free prisons: a qualitative focus group study.

OBJECTIVE: Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) were introduced into all Scottish prisons in February 2018, some months after prisons began preparing in 2017 for a smoking ban implemented in November 2018. In 2016/2017, prison staff views on the potential benefits and risks of e-cigarettes were explored in advance of the introduction of: (1) a smoking ban and (2) e-cigarettes. SETTING: Fourteen prisons in Scotland. PARTICIPANTS: Seventeen focus groups and two paired interviews were conducted with 132 staff in 14 Scottish prisons 4-9 months before plans for a smoking ban were announced in Jul

Disease burden from tobacco consumption in Peru and the projected effect of strengthening control measures: a modeling study.

BACKGROUND: Motivation for the study. Despite progress in tobacco control, the economic and disease burden in Peru remains high. Strengthening smoke-free regulations, implementing plain packaging, banning tobacco promotion and sponsorship, and increasing taxes could reduce it. Main findings. Tobacco use causes 22,350 deaths and 126,000 disease events annually in Peru, resulting in a loss of 1.28% of GDP. Strengthening tobacco control policies would prevent thousands of deaths and save billions in costs. Implications. Stricter tobacco control policies can reduce the health and economic costs as

The so-called "Spanish model" - tobacco industry strategies and its impact in Europe and Latin America.

BACKGROUND: To demonstrate the tobacco industry rationale behind the "Spanish model" on non-smokers' protection in hospitality venues and the impact it had on some European and Latin American countries between 2006 and 2011. METHODS: Tobacco industry documents research triangulated against news and media reports. RESULTS: As an alternative to the successful implementation of 100% smoke-free policies, several European and Latin American countries introduced partial smoking bans based on the so-called "Spanish model", a legal framework widely advocated by parts of the hospitality industry with

Secondhand smoke exposure among patients with coronary heart disease in a tertiary Grade A hospital in China: A qualitative study of lived experience and sociocultural challenges.

INTRODUCTION: Secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure is a known cardiovascular risk factor, but little is understood about how patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) perceive and manage this exposure in daily life. This study aimed to explore the perceptions, lived experiences, and sociocultural challenges of SHS exposure among Chinese patients with CHD. METHODS: Face-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted from December 2023 to April 2024 in the cardiovascular ward of a tertiary Grade A hospital in China, using a descriptive phenomenological approach, among twelve participants. Public smoking ban and socioeconomic inequalities in smoking prevalence and cessation: a cross-sectional population-based study in Geneva, Switzerland (1995-2014).

INTRODUCTION: Smoking bans were suggested to reduce smoking prevalence and increase quit ratio but their equity impact remains unclear. We aimed to characterise the socioeconomic status (SES)-related inequalities in smoking prevalence and quit ratio before and after the implementation of a public smoking ban. METHODS: We included data from 17 544 participants in the population-based cross-sectional Bus Santé study in Geneva, Switzerland, between 1995 and 2014. We considered educational attainment (primary, secondary and tertiary) as a SES indicator. Outcomes were smoking prevalence (proportio

Time to Smoke: Facilitating Smoking Breaks in Mental Health Inpatient Settings.

INTRODUCTION: Prevalence of smoking in mental health patients is up to three times higher than in the general population, with the highest rates seen in inpatient settings. In many countries, smoke-free policies in inpatient settings prohibit smoking in buildings but allow supervised smoking breaks. We aimed to estimate staff resources dedicated to such breaks. METHODS: A cross sectional survey was conducted with a convenience sample of inpatient mental health staff from four hospitals in London, England. Staff were asked about the number of designated supervised smoking breaks and their dura

South Korean military service promotes smoking: a quasi-experimental design.

PURPOSE: The South Korean (SK) government monopolizes the tobacco industry and is accused of pushing smoking on captive military personnel. However, estimating the association between military service and smoking is difficult, since military service is required for all SK men and the few civilian waivers are usually based on smoking determinants, e.g., social status. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using a quasi-experimental design we validly estimate the association between military service and smoking. Military service was assigned by immigration patterns to the United States, instead of an experime

Exempting casinos from the Smoke-free Illinois Act will not bring patrons back: they never left.

OBJECTIVE: The Smoke-free Illinois Act was implemented in January 2008, one month after the beginning of a national recession. In December 2010, the Illinois legislature proposed new legislation that would provide an exemption for casinos from the act until neighbouring states also implement smoke-free casino policies. Lobbyists and gaming commission representatives argued that Illinois casinos were losing patrons to casinos in neighbouring states that allow smoking. This study examined the influence of the act on casino admissions in Illinois and neighbouring states in light of the economy.

Overwhelming and cross-party public support for robust tobacco control measures to achieve a Smokefree Aotearoa New Zealand: findings from a national survey.

AIM: Tobacco is a leading cause of preventable disease, mortality and health inequity in Aotearoa New Zealand where smoking prevalence decline has stalled. Further reductions will likely require tobacco control measures beyond business-as-usual approaches. We report survey support for tobacco control and vaping regulation policies. METHODS: We recruited adults from an online panel using quota sampling. We assessed support using a structured questionnaire for: reducing nicotine content in smoked tobacco products; restricting retail availability of tobacco/vaping products; a tobacco-free genera

Underestimation of homeless clients' interest in quitting smoking: a case for routine tobacco assessment.

Issue addressed In Australia smoking rates among the homeless are extremely high; however, little is known about their interest in quitting and few homeless services offer cessation assistance. In an Australian homeless service, this research examined the clients' smoking from the client, staff and organisational perspectives in order to assess the need for cessation assistance for clients and identify opportunities to increase access to it. Methods Twenty-six nurses completed an anonymous survey describing their attitudes to providing smoking-cessation support, current practices and estimates

Spontaneous Smoking Cessation in Parents.

PURPOSE: To determine the percentage of parents who report quitting spontaneously and examine the factors associated with these quits. METHODS: As part of a cluster randomized control trial addressing parental smoking in a pediatric outpatient setting, 12-month follow-up survey data were collected from parents who had self-identified as smokers when exiting from 10 control practices. Parents were considered to have made a spontaneous quit if they reported not smoking a cigarette, even a puff, in the last 7 days and chose the statement "I did not plan the quit in advance; I just did it" when d
