OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to identify patterns of family functioning in adult families after the death of a parent.
METHOD: One hundred fifteen families completed measures of family functioning, grief, psychological state, and social adjustment 6 weeks (time 1), 6 months (time 2), and 13 months (time 3) after the death of a parent (a total of 670 individual responses). With the closure of all public places, the stay-at-home order and the worsening economic indices occasioned by the fall in the price of crude oil with no foreseeable end, learned helplessness, negative emotions, and other psychosocial problems are bound to thrive. Interventions to improve social capital, coping resources, resilience, and good community and family cohesion are needed to promote psychosocial well-being during and after the COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria. Long-duration space missions expose crews to extreme psychological and social stressors due to prolonged isolation and confinement. To examine how such conditions impact individual and team functioning, we studied a 10-mo Antarctic overwintering mission at Concordia Station, an analog for spaceflight, using self-report measures and wearable proximity sensors. Twelve crew members were assessed at four time-points. Results revealed a progressive increase in feelings of loneliness and conflict, while cohesion and individual performance declined. Close-range interactions were positively associated

The growing incidence and prevalence of civilization diseases is prompting national and transnational entities to seek instruments that would reverse epidemiological trends. Not without significance is the need to design such solutions that are going to provide an improved relation between the costs incurred to maintain health or recovery and the profit for citizens of continuing to function in good health. In its strategic documents, the European Union indicates the most important development goals in each financial perspective and the tools necessary to achieve them. In the Europe 2020 strat

OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether loneliness or social isolation serves as the main pathway connecting social connectedness dimensions to mental health outcomes among midlife to older adults.
METHODS: We examined longitudinal data from 4,963 adults aged 40-65 at baseline in the U.S. national MIDUS study (2004-2014). Social connectedness was assessed across six areas: neighborhood social cohesion, social integration, family support, friend support, social contribution, and community contribution. Loneliness and social isolation (contact frequency) were measured at baseline; psychological dist…

This study examined the individual characteristics, family relations, and stress/social support of 50 maltreated adolescents and their mothers. Dyads were divided into 4 demographically similar groups: neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, and nonmaltreatment control. Results show that adolescent neglect was primarily associated with extrafamilial difficulties and social isolation. Adolescent physical abuse was linked more with rigidity in family relations, poorer maternal understanding of child developmental skills, and adolescent externalizing behaviors. In contrast, adolescent sexual abuse

Early adolescence is a dynamic period of social and brain development amid rapid hormonal and puberty changes. We examined how differences and changes in positive social experiences and cortical thickness co-develop from age 9-11 and 11-13 years in the ABCD cohort (N~12,000). We used bivariate latent change score models to capture cortical development (modeling mean whole-brain cortical thickness) and positive social experiences (modeling caregiver monitoring, family cohesion, prosocial behavior, number of friends, school engagement, school involvement, and neighborhood safety). We found evide

Childhood maltreatment is a serious stressor affecting mental health directly and indirectly through relationships, creating social chains of risk. Adolescent peers are one key relationship in the early life course, but whether peer networks mediate associations between maltreatment and mental health or if such pathways differ by gender remains unclear. We conduct path analysis on survey data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (N = 9,118) to examine gendered chains of risk linking childhood maltreatment, adolescent peer networks, and depressive symptoms. Results

BACKGROUND: Interprofessional education (IPE) is essential for healthcare collaboration, yet the psychological mechanisms influencing students' readiness remain underexplored, leaving teachers with limited guidance on how to effectively foster student engagement and collaboration.
OBJECTIVE: Guided by self-determination theory, this study explored the mechanism through which satisfaction of basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence, and relatedness) promotes students' readiness for interprofessional learning (teamwork and collaboration, professional identity) via collective capabilities
