Randomised controlled trial of Interpersonal and Social Rhythm Therapy and group-based Cognitive Remediation versus Interpersonal and Social Rhythm Therapy alone for mood disorders: study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with mood disorders frequently experience cognitive impairment, which impacts on the long-term trajectory of the disorders, including being associated with persisting difficulties in occupational and psychosocial functioning, residual mood symptoms, and relapse. Current first-line treatments for mood disorders do little to improve cognitive function. Targeting cognition in clinical research is thus considered a priority. This protocol outlines a prospectively-registered randomised controlled trial (RCT) which examines the impact of adding group-based Cognitive Remediati

A Social Network Analysis of the Structure and Leadership Roles of a Drug Trafficking Group in China: A Case Study.

Despite the proliferation of social network analysis (SNA) in criminological research, our understanding of criminal leadership remains heavily skewed toward Western organized crime group models. This study contributes a descriptive case study of an underrepresented context by examining the structure and leadership of a domestic drug trafficking group in China (N = 27), using data from a publicly available court verdict. Unlike the insulated shot-callers often found in Western literature, the leadership in this "cafeteria-style" drug trafficking group remained highly active. Exploratory bivari

Immune logics, immune selves and immunoprivilege in the COVID era: Perspectives from marginalised social groups.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been accompanied by a fraught immunopolitics in which the health and interests of powerful social groups have been privileged, supported and valued while members of disadvantaged groups have been positioned as both more vulnerable and expendable. This article identifies logics about immune selves ('immune logics') among marginalised Australian sub-groups who have historically been subjected to discrimination and social stigma. The study involved 30 semi-structured interviews with LGBTIQA + people and people living with the blood-borne viruses hepatitis B, hepatitis C …

The effect of alcoholics anonymous group participation on flourishing in Turkey: the mediating role of hope and social support.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a significant public health issue that negatively impacts individuals’ flourishing, social relationships, and life satisfaction. In recent years, the concept of recovery has been approached as encompassing not only the reduction or cessation of alcohol use but also the strengthening of positive psychology-based resources such as hope, social support, and developmental flourishing. Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) groups are an important community-based intervention that can contribute to the development of these resources through mutual experience sharing and

Gendernauts in the Cistem - How Do Nonbinary People Handle Social Groups and Gender Minority Stress?

This study explores how nonbinary individuals manage minority stress within the predominantly binary society of Switzerland. Utilizing social identity theory and minority stress theory, along with thematic analysis of focus group interviews with 16 nonbinary individuals and 14 social identity maps, the study found three concentric circles of social groups: circle 1 (family, partners, friends), circle 2 (coworkers, LGBTIQA+ communities), and circle 3 (the public, media, Swiss institutions). Participants primarily felt affirmed and supported by circles 1 and 2. They reported feeling less support…

Income insecurity and social protection: Examining the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic across income groups.

The COVID-19 pandemic has wrought unprecedented disruption on global economies, leading to widespread income insecurity among individuals and households. This study investigates the impact of the pandemic on income insecurity across different income groups and assesses the role of social protection measures in mitigating these effects. Using cross-country data, we analyze the prevalence of income reduction and the effectiveness of social assistance programs in high-income, upper middle-income, lower middle-income, and low-income countries. Our findings reveal significant variations in income i

Susceptibility to Ingroup Influence in Adolescents With Intellectual Disability: A Minimal Group Experiment on Social Judgment Making.

Adolescents with intellectual disability (ID) experience challenges and uncertainty when making judgments about other people's intentions. In an attempt to achieve certainty, they might exhibit judgment tendencies that differ from those of typically developing adolescents. This study investigated social judgment making in adolescents with ID (n = 34, M age = 14.89 years, SD = 1.41 years) compared with chronological age-matched adolescents without ID (n = 34, M age = 14.68 years, SD = 1.15 years) and mental age (MA)-matched children (n = 34, M age = 7.93 years, SD = 0.64 years). Scientific collaboration in Zika: identification of the leading research groups and researchers via social network analysis.

The association between Zika and microcephaly drew international attention to Brazil. The emergency situation demanded speed and collective effort by researchers worldwide, and Science was quick to investigate the disease and publish the results. Scientific knowledge was created and disseminated through collaboration in this process. Publications are still the best way of disseminating scientific knowledge. They allow to record progress in a field of studies and observe how scientists collaborate to produce advances as new knowledge and technologies are generated. An effective way to map such

Social Anxiety Disorder and Perceived Criticism in Intimate Relationships: Comparisons With Normal and Clinical Control Groups.

Individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) have difficulties in their romantic relationships, including decreased satisfaction and intimacy, but the reasons for these difficulties are poorly understood. Because fear of negative evaluation is a cardinal feature of SAD, perceived criticism from a romantic partner may play a central role in socially anxious individuals' relationships. In the present study, we compared levels of perceived, expressed, and observed criticism and reactions to criticism among individuals with SAD and their partners (n = 21), individuals with other anxiety disorder

Spatial associations between social groups and ozone air pollution exposure in the Beijing urban area.

Few studies have linked social factors to air pollution exposure in China. Unlike the race or minority concepts in western countries, the Hukou system (residential registration system) is a fundamental reason for the existence of social deprivation in China. To assess the differences in ozone (O3) exposure among social groups, especially groups divided by Hukou status, we assigned estimates of O3 exposure to the latest census data of the Beijing urban area using a kriging interpolation model. We developed simultaneous autoregressive (SAR) models that account for spatial autocorrelation to iden…

[Psychodynamic short-term group treatment for social phobia: description of the treatment concept and a case study].

Based upon the concept of supportive-expressive therapy (SET), we developed a psychodynamic group treatment manual for social phobia, with a special focus on the patients' individual core conflictual relationship themes, their universality, as well as interventions promoting group processes and therapeutic factors of group therapy. We introduce the new concept and report results of a pilot case study (N=8). Analyses revealed a pre-post-treatment effect size of g=0.64 (95% CI [0.29; 1.00]) on the primary outcome measure, the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS). Furthermore we obtained positiv

Measuring associations among British national identification, group norms and social distancing behaviour during the COVID-19 pandemic: Testing a Social Identity Model of Behavioural Associations (SIMBA).

Social identification and group norms have been identified as key social psychological determinants of engagement in protective public health behaviours, such as social distancing, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing upon both social identity and balanced identity theories, the research tests the utility of a Social Identity Model of Behavioural Associations (SIMBA)-which proposes reciprocal, interactive associations among self-group, group-behaviour and self-behaviour concepts-for the measurement of British national identification, group norms and social distancing behaviour at t

Effects of Social Group Housing on the Behavioral and Physiological Responses of Captive Sub-Adult Giant Pandas.

Wild giant pandas are inherently solitary creatures, however, the ex-situ conservation efforts significantly alter the living circumstances of their captive counterparts. Following the breeding period, giant pandas in captivity may be maintained in social groups. Currently, there is a lack of research on the effects of group housing on the physiology, behavior, and gut microbiota of captive giant pandas. This study divided six captive giant pandas into two groups following the breeding period. By comparing the behavior, physiology, and microorganisms of the two groups, we aim to investigate th…
