The social consequences of surgical complications for patients with proximal femoral fractures.

A case-matched study was performed to assess the social effects of surgical complications of operative fixation of fractures of the proximal femur. Fifty-two patients aged over sixty-five, half with deep wound infection, the remainder with serious early mechanical problems requiring revision surgery to correct these, had their hospital fatality, length of stay, mobility and social dependency at admission and on discharge compared with patients free from such complications. Deep wound infection was associated with a high fatality and in the survivors a prolonged period in hospital, a marked dec

Addressing individual differences in mobility transition counseling with older adults.

In the final phase of a 3-phase project, the Assessment of Readiness for Mobility Transition (ARMT) was clinically validated, emphasizing assessment/intervention. ARMT and coping, health/vision status, and social support measures were administered to 133 community-dwelling older adults. Concurrent validity is supported. Higher readiness to cope with mobility transition and self-confidence related to fall risk, higher self-rated health/vision, and fewer maladaptive behaviors, but not social support/adaptive coping, suggesting that those at risk can benefit from person-centered intervention to m

The impact of dengue illness on social distancing and caregiving behavior.

BACKGROUND: Human mobility among residential locations can drive dengue virus (DENV) transmission dynamics. Recently, it was shown that individuals with symptomatic DENV infection exhibit significant changes in their mobility patterns, spending more time at home during illness. This change in mobility is predicted to increase the risk of acquiring infection for those living with or visiting the ill individual. It has yet to be considered, however, whether social contacts are also changing their mobility, either by socially distancing themselves from the infectious individual or increasing cont

The association of gait speed and self-reported difficulty walking with social isolation: A nationally-representative study.

BACKGROUND: Mobility assessments are commonly used among older adults as risk stratification for falls, preoperative function, frailty, and mortality. We determined if gait speed and self-reported difficulty walking are similarly associated with social isolation and loneliness, which are key markers of social well-being and linked to health outcomes. METHODS: We used 2015-2016 data from the National Social life Health and Aging Project (NSHAP), an in-person nationally-representative survey of 2640 community-dwelling adults ≥65 years old. We measured gait speed (timed 3-m walk: unable to walk,

The mobility problem in Britain: new findings from the analysis of birth cohort data.

Social mobility is now a matter of greater political concern in Britain than at any time previously. However, the data available for the determination of mobility trends are less adequate today than two or three decades ago. It is widely believed in political and in media circles that social mobility is in decline. But the evidence so far available from sociological research, focused on intergenerational class mobility, is not supportive of this view. We present results based on a newly-constructed dataset covering four birth cohorts that provides improved data for the study of trends in class…

Physical activity, social support, and depression: possible independent and indirect associations in persons with multiple sclerosis.

The present study examined the pattern of associations among physical activity, social support, mobility disability, perceived stress, and depressive symptoms in relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS). Persons (N = 218) with RRMS completed a battery of questionnaires that was sent and returned through the United States Postal Service (USPS). Bivariate correlation analysis indicated that physical activity and social support were both inversely associated with depressive symptoms (r's = -0.288 and -0.386, p ≤ 0.05, respectively). Multiple linear regression analysis indicated that physical activity (β = -

A holistic understanding of challenges faced by people with low vision.

Prior research on visual impairments has documented specific challenges that people with low vision face such as reading and mobility. Yet, much less focus has been given to the relationships between seemingly separate challenges such as mobility and social interactions; limiting the potential of services and assistive technologies for people with low vision. To address this gap, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 30 low vision participants and examined the relationships between challenges and coping strategies overarching three facets of life - functional, psychological, and social.

Neighborhood environmental attributes and walking mobility decline: A longitudinal ecological study of mid-to-older aged Australian adults.

OBJECTIVES: Cross-sectional studies have found some built environmental attributes to be associated with residents' lower levels of mobility (functional capacity to walk outside the home). However, less is known about what environmental attributes are related to mobility decline. This longitudinal study examined area-level associations of specific environmental attributes with mid-to-older aged adults' changes in walking mobility. METHODS: Data collected from 4,088 adults (aged 46-71 years at baseline) who participated in a cohort study in Brisbane, Australia were used. The outcome was the ch

MAPx (Mobility Aid Personalization): examining why older adults "pimp their ride" and the impact of doing so.

We all do this. We personalize things. We buy leopard-printed seat covers and fuzzy dice for our cars, and display action figures and photographs in our offices. Studying older adults who have extended this process of personalization to their mobility devices, the purpose of the mobility aid personalization (MAPx) project is to examine MAPx and its impact on the health and mobility of older adults. Using a qualitative research design, field observations and interviews were conducted with 72 older adults to gain an in-depth understanding of device customization from an emic (insider's) perspect

Life-space mobility in dementia patients and family caregivers: A dyadic approach.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Given that most dementia care is provided at home by family caregivers, caregivers' health and outdoor activities may influence persons with dementia (PWDs)' mobility. At the same time, PWDs' functional deterioration and mobility changes might affect mobility behaviours in their caregivers. The aims of this pilot study were to examine the relationship of PWD's life-space mobility (LSM) with their caregiver's LSM and to investigate the role of caregiver and PWD characteristics in determining the level of LSM in both PWDs and caregivers. DESIGN AND METHOD: A cross-sect

Loneliness trajectories surrounding mobility loss: the role of disability duration.

OBJECTIVES: Mobility limitations in later life can disrupt social engagement and increase loneliness, but trajectories may differ depending on whether limitations remain or individuals recover. This study examines loneliness trajectories around the onset of mobility limitations, focusing on differences by limitation duration. METHODS: Data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe were used to analyze 4,109 adults aged 65+ who experienced the onset of mobility limitations, of whom 2,018 recovered within 2 years. A reference group of 8,197 individuals had no mobility limitatio
