Stories of Vulnerabilities: Life Story Perspectives on Food Security, Risk Adaptation and Resilience in Rural Tanzanian Communities.

This study investigates food security in rural Tanzanian communities through the lens of vulnerability. Using a mixed-methods approach combining life stories, survey data, and key informant interviews, it explores the interplay among risk management, resilience, and food security, focusing on vulnerable groups. Survey data provide an overview of food security conditions, while life stories capture participants' life trajectories. Findings show substantial challenges in food availability and access, driven by environmental, natural, and social shocks. Vulnerable groups face more risks, rely mor

The compounding burden of disability in Mexico: social protection gaps, chronic disease excess, and prospective mortality from national open data sources.

BACKGROUND: Persons with disabilities (PWD) face disproportionate barriers to social protection and healthcare worldwide, yet comprehensive multi-source evidence linking social security coverage, morbidity, and mortality outcomes remains scarce in Latin America. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional, multi-source population-based study with a prospective cohort component, integrating nine nationally representative Mexican data sources (2017-2023) encompassing over 125 million persons. Disability was operationalized using source-specific measures, including Washington Group-based instruments

Parent and Peer Predictors of Change in Attachment Security From Adolescence to Adulthood.

Interview, self-report, peer report, and observational data were used to examine parent and peer relationship qualities as predictors of relative changes in attachment security in a community sample of adolescents followed from ages 14 to 24. Early maternal supportive behavior predicted relative increases in attachment security from adolescence to adulthood, whereas psychological control and interparental hostile conflict predicted relative decreases. Peer predictors of relative increases in security included collaborative and autonomous behaviors and lack of hostile interactions, with peer pr

Trends in Mortality by HIV/AIDS in Children in Mexico: Towards the Elimination of Mother-To-Child Transmission.

AIM OF THE STUDY: To examine mortality trends in children under 15 years of age due to HIV/AIDS in Mexico and describe their differences by insurance coverage. METHODS: Time series analysis of deaths from 1990-2019 through a Bayesian poisson regression model with linear splines and knots in 1994, 1997, and 2003. RESULTS: Overall, we observed a reduction in the mortality rate due to HIV from 2003 onwards, except in the group of 10-14 years. In the population covered with Social Security, mortality rates decreased in all age groups. However, in the group without Social Security or with Popular

Unveiling the effects of economic complexity, climate change, and urbanisation on energy security: Evidence from high-risk countries.

Energy security remains a critical issue in both scientific and political debates because of its wide-ranging economic, social, and environmental implications, as well as its influence on policy actions at the global, national, and local levels. However, comprehensive assessments of all key aspects of energy security remain incomplete, and no unified indicators adequately capture a country's level of energy security. To this aim, the study addresses the economic and sociopolitical factors influencing energy security using a novel analytical approach, focusing on countries identified as having

Birth rates and migration: an AI and One Health approach within the Italian National Health System.

This study examines the future stability of Italy's health and social systems in the context of demographic decline. The Italian healthcare system, grounded in a universalistic and public model, founded on the principle of equity, is undergoing a phase of instability. The COVID-19 pandemic represented a critical rupture, exposing systemic weaknesses, territorial disparities, infrastructural inadequacies, the rigidity of financing mechanisms and the lack of reform regarding citizenship rights for foreign residents. An inductive, interpretive approach was adopted, starting with data analysis fro

Security Event-Trigger-Based Distributed Energy Management Of Cyber-Physical Isolated Power System With Considering Nonsmooth Effects.

Due to cyber-physical fusion and nonsmooth characteristics of energy management, this article proposes a security event-trigger-based distributed approach to address these issues with developed smoothing technique. To tackle with nonconvex and nondifferentiable issue, a randomized gradient-free-based successive convex approximation is developed to smooth economic objective function. Due to resilience ability against security issue, a security event-triggered mechanism-based distributed energy management is proposed to optimize social welfare, which coordinately controls both power generators a

Combining Private and Social Health Insurance in Low- and Middle-Income Countries.

An increasing number of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) have turned to social health insurance (SHI) to achieve universal health coverage (UHC). However, as SHI and tax-funded systems struggle to achieve UHC, one is left wondering whether private health insurance (PHI) is a feasible option and what its appropriate role should be. This paper seeks to shed more light on whether unsubsidized or subsidized PHI can be used to support UHC progress made by tax-funded systems or SHI. The paper argues that PHI is best positioned to offer supplementary coverage to those who remain part of SHI,

[Case management and expert assessment of work disability].

More than 3 years ago the MDK in Bavaria established a new way of handling medical expertising concerning incapacitation for work. Until that time the physical examination of the patient was seen as an indispensable condition for the statement of capacitation for work. All former efforts to qualify the consultations together with the staff of the institutions of the social health insurance served the purpose of preparing and improving this physical examination oft the patient.--The new bavarian way here presented tried from the beginning to make those examinations unnecessary by improving the

[The judgement of the degree of disability in cases of aphakia and pseudoaphakia (author's transl)].

Since more than 40 years the judgement of the degree of disability in cases of unilateral aphakia is discussed. This means the effort toward an advisory objectivity on the one hand and human understanding for the patient's damage on the other hand. It is supposed to repeal the 4th emergency ordinance of 1932 and to pay pensions below 20% of the degree of disability, too. As long as new legislatory measurements do not exist, the maintenance of a pragmatic authoritative activity is plead for, which assigns for a pension-duty compensation in cases of unilateral aphakia and/or pseudoaphakia indepe

The new subversive geranium: some notes on the management of additional troubles in maximum security prisons.

In this paper, we revisit King and McDermott's 1990 article on the social construction of 'control problem' prisoners and their management in high security prisons, in the light of our recent research on the location and building of trust in contemporary high security prisons. We examine how religious and race identities are now deeply implicated in the construction of risk, and we describe the procedures for and some of the consequences of managing the new risks of radicalization and extremist violence in prison. The analysis is based on observations and interviews with staff and prisoners in

Material security and adherence to antiretroviral therapy among HIV-positive people who use illicit drugs.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between poverty, operationalized using a novel material security measure, and adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) among people who use illicit drugs (PWUD) in a context of universal access to HIV care. DESIGN: We analyzed data from a community-recruited prospective cohort in Vancouver, Canada (n = 623), from 2014 to 2017. METHODS: We used multivariable generalized mixed-effects analyses to estimate longitudinal factors associated with mean material security score. We then estimated the association between achieving at least 95% adherence to ART an
