BACKGROUND: Monkeypox (mpox) has emerged as a global public health concern, particularly among men who have sex with men (MSM). Stigma limits access to care, and the role of social support in shaping care-seeking through psychosocial mechanisms remains unclear. This study examined whether social support influences care-seeking intentions via stigma and perceived healthcare benefits among MSM in China.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted from October 2023 to March 2024 across 6 provinces in China. Descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, Spearman correlations, and logistic regressi

Introduction: Anxiety and depression in people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) can lead to non-adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART), morbidity, and mortality. Therefore, assessing the stigma, social support, and other determinants of anxiety and depression in PLWHA are important for developing further interventions. Methods: An institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted in 505 PLWHA, approached through systematic sampling, who paid routine visits to the ART center, Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Islamabad. Data was collected by pretested validated hospital anxiety

PURPOSE: Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is a condition characterised by metabolic dysfunction, with an increasing prevalence among young and middle‑aged adults who are overweight or obese. Emotional eating, a common maladaptive eating behaviour, is frequently observed in overweight and obese populations. Although previous studies have indicated that social support is closely related to eating behaviours, its specific role in patients with MAFLD remains to be further elucidated.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A cross‑sectional study was conducted in Shihezi, Xinjiang, Chin

INTRODUCTION: Social networks, social support and social isolation are potential pathways through which perceived social stigma links to psychological distress. Yet little is known about this in carers of people with severe mental illness.
AIM: To assess the multiple pathways of social networks, social support and social isolation in the relationship between perceived social stigma and psychological distress among carers of people with severe mental illness.
METHOD: 328 Chinese carers of people with severe mental illness were recruited in Hunan China. Participants completed the Perceived Dev

BACKGROUND: Despite extensive evidence regarding the negative effects of stigma experienced by people living with HIV (PLHIV) and people who inject drugs within health care settings, comparatively little evidence exists regarding the effectiveness of initiatives to reduce this stigma.
METHOD: This study developed and assessed brief online interventions based on social norms theory with a sample of Australian health care workers (n=653). Participants were randomly allocated to either 1) HIV intervention group, or 2) injecting drug use intervention group. They completed baseline measures of the

BACKGROUND: The stigmatization by healthcare professionals (HP) of patients suffering from mental disorders is an important problem that interferes with the delivery of medical assistance. Social distancing by HP is an integral part of stigmatization, which differs between various mental disorders, as well as between psychiatrists (PSY) versus nonpsychiatrist healthcare professionals (NPHP).
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The study included 141 HP: PSY (n=20; 36.2±4.2 y.o.) and NPHP (n=121; 25.9±2.2 y.o.). The NPHP group included general practitioners (GP)/physicians (n=29; 20.6%), surgeons (n=19; 13.

Among sub-Saharan African adolescents, delayed HIV and pregnancy disclosure, stigma, and insufficient social support are barriers to engagement in antenatal care and services to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV. We developed and evaluated the acceptability and short-term preliminary efficacy of a digitally illustrated, narrative-based intervention designed to address these barriers among Kenyan pregnant adolescents aged 15-19 years living with HIV. We used an iterative, theory-informed, mixed methods human centered design approach. Individual adolescent and dyadic adolescent-caregiv

OBJECTIVES: Depression and Anxiety are pervasive in multiple sclerosis (MS), yet the psychosocial mechanisms associated with these outcomes in this neurological condition remain insufficiently specified. Guided by the Disclosure Processes Model, this study examined how functional disability and anticipated stigma are associated with depression and anxiety indirectly through distress disclosure, and whether these pathways are moderated by perceived social support.
METHODS: In a sample of 272 Iranian adults with MS diagnosis (79.4% women; Mage = 42.5 years), participants completed the Chronic I

BACKGROUND: Among people with cystic fibrosis (CF), health behaviors and mental health have been associated with general social support. We used egocentric network analysis to assess the specific impact of social network variables on treatment adherence, depression, anxiety, and perceived stigma among adults with CF. Our goal is to identify the social network factors which may be driving adherence, anxiety, depression, and perceived stigma among adults with CF toward developing targeted network-based interventions.
METHOD: Our primary outcome, adherence to individual-level treatment regimens,

BACKGROUND: Internalized stigma and medication non-adherence pose significant challenges for treating major depressive disorder (MDD), leading to disability, increased suicide risk, and morbidity. Limited data exists on modifiable factors associated with adherence in lower-resourced settings like Malaysia. This study aimed to investigate poor adherence prevalence and the demographic and clinical factors associated with poor medication adherence among patients with MDD.
METHODS: This cross-sectional survey recruited participants using universal sampling from a major hospital in Selangor, Malay

We characterize the way human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) stigma hinders HIV conversations and testing. Using grounded theory principles, we analyzed in-depth interviews of the experiences of select Philippine key populations (groups with high HIV burden) and their families: 19 men who have sex with men (KPM), 16 transgender women (KPW), and 16 parents of KPM/W. Results show how KPM/W protect the state of being respected by others (management of social standing), a task they engage in by strategically modulating behavior in different life domains, including when considering HIV conversations

BACKGROUND: Patients with psoriasis also often experience stigma due to skin lesions, and this stigma further leads to severe psychological problems such as anxiety and depression. However, it is unclear how, and under what conditions, stigma relates to mental health. This study aimed to investigate the current status and interrelationships between stigma, social appearance anxiety, alexithymia, and mental health in patients with psoriasis. It also sought to identify the factors that influenced their mental health and to examine the mediating roles of social appearance anxiety and alexithymia

Black and Latina women are disproportionately impacted by HIV/AIDS. Despite existing research linking social networks and HIV risk among men who have sex with men (MSM) and other high-risk populations, little research has examined how ethnic/racial minority women's social networks shape HIV prevention and intervention targets. Using interviews with a sample of 165 predominantly Black and Latina-identifying women from a small city in the Western U.S., this research examines the relationship between egocentric network characteristics and HIV knowledge, attitudes, and testing history. Results rev

BACKGROUND: Perceived social support is consistently associated with lower psychological distress among university students, but the strength of this association may vary. We examined whether help-seeking self-stigma modifies it.
METHODS: In a cross-sectional online survey, 507 Kuwait University students completed the Patient Health Questionnaire-4 (PHQ-4), the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) and the Self-Stigma of Seeking Help Scale (SSOSH). Hierarchical linear regression tested the perceived support × self-stigma interaction, adjusting for age, sex, nationality an

BACKGROUND: Population ageing is accompanied by increasing exposure to psychosocial challenges, including age-related stereotypes and stigma. Internalized age-related stigma has emerged as an important psychosocial factor associated with mental health and well-being among older adults. However, empirical evidence examining its associations with well-being, quality of life, depressive symptoms and perceived social support remains limited, particularly in non-Western cultural contexts.
METHODS: This cross-sectional quantitative study included 139 adults aged 65 years and older attending an inte

BACKGROUND: Psychological distress is prevalent in patients with stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and may contribute to disease progression. However, the interplay among its influencing factors remains unclear. This study aimed to explore how social support, symptom burden, dyspnea, perceived stress, perceived stigma, and coping styles impact psychological distress in stable COPD using a structural equation model (SEM).
METHODS: A convenience sample of 386 stable COPD patients was recruited from three tertiary hospitals in Chongqing, China. Data were collected using Distres

Although pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a highly effective preventive treatment for HIV, anticipated PrEP stigma can hinder uptake. Perceptions of bias in HIV prevention and evaluations (e.g., happiness) tied to social support among Black and Latine/x sexual and gender diverse (SGD) individuals could be important correlates of anticipated PrEP stigma. To further this line of inquiry, a national sample of 872 Black and Latine/x SGD individuals who had and had never taken PrEP (Mage = 25.1, SD = 2.8) reported how they perceived HIV prevention and how happy they were with their social support

UNLABELLED: Background Stigma is associated with poor health among sexual minority individuals. However, no studies have examined the relationship between stigma and problematic drinking among male sex workers (MSWs). This study examined the relationship between sex work stigma and problematic alcohol use among MSWs.
METHODS: Using baseline data from a cohort of 98 MSWs in the US Northeast enrolled between 2015 and 2016, we used logistic regression to examine associations between sex work stigma and hazardous drinking (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) score ≥8) and sex work w
