An exploration of social support as a factor in the return-to-work process.

Despite evidence that inter-personal relationships are important in human resource management, little is understood about the nature of workplace social support in a disability context, or what features of support are important to the success of return-to-work programs. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore workplace disability support from worker and supervisory perspectives and to identify salient features for work re-entry. A total of 8 supervisors and 18 previously injured workers from a range of work units in a Canadian municipality were interviewed, and their views concern…

Effectiveness of an empirically supported treatment for social phobia in the field.

This study examined the effectiveness of individual exposure combined with cognitive restructuring for social phobia in a clinical setting as well as the influence of sample restriction criteria on the effect size. Job stress and health: the role of social support at work.

Data are presented on the use of social resources to reduce the negative effects of perceived job stress on the health of 26 psychiatric technicians who cared for severely and profoundly retarded residents of a state institution. Data were collected by participant observation, semistructured interviews, and the self-administered Cornell Medical Index. Sources of job stress were found to stem not from problems associated with the care of the retarded but rather from staff members' inability to control other critical aspects of their work. Staff with supportive work-based social networks reporte

The role of social support in the effectiveness of counseling for international students.

Previous studies on college counseling have shown that international student clients experience higher psychological distress and benefit less from individual psychotherapy in a university counseling center (UCC) setting compared to domestic student clients. International students face many challenges during adjustment to a foreign country, and social support plays a crucial role during this process and in their psychological well-being. This study aimed to compare the levels of pre-treatment symptoms and treatment outcomes between international and domestic student clients, and examine how pe…

Social media engagement of supportive care publications in oncology.

IMPORTANCE: There is an increasing number of cancer 'survivors' and increasing research into supportive care. However, it is unknown how patterns of attention and citation differ between supportive and non-supportive cancer care research. We sought to estimate the engagement of high-impact studies of supportive compared to non-supportive cancer care papers. METHODS: In a cross-sectional review of top oncology journals (2016-2023), we reviewed studies examining supportive care strategies and a frequency-matched random sampling of studies on non-supportive interventions. We compared data on soc

The duration of untreated psychosis is associated with social support and temperament.

The duration of untreated psychosis (DUP) has been suggested to be a modifiable factor influencing psychosis outcome. There are many studies on the factors that predict DUP, although with contradictory findings. Although temperament has been associated with seeking help in other pathologies, studies about how temperament influences DUP are lacking. This study explored the role of temperament (measured by the Eysenck Personality Inventory Questionnaire) on DUP and tested the hypothesis that social support modifies the effects of neuroticism and extraversion on DUP. We evaluated 97 first-episode…

The longitudinal effects of social support and hostility on depressive tendencies.

This 14-year longitudinal study examined the independent association between perceived social support and the 5-year progression of depressive tendencies while taking into account the potential effects of childhood/adolescent anger and later hostility. From the on-going population based study of "Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns", 553 male and 860 female participants responded to a revised version of Beck's Depression Inventory in 1992 and 1997. Hostility and perceived social support were assessed by self-rated questionnaires in 1992. Childhood/adolescent anger was assessed by parent-reports…

A case story is presented to show several barriers to home care for a 15 year old boy with Hunter's syndrome and severe disability. The case showed a need for further education and coordination of professionals in order for pediatric home care to be more efficient and supportive in Israel.

Companion cats and the social support systems of men with AIDS.

60 male pet owners with AIDS were given a formal questionnaire including items related to demographic, lifestyle, and pet ownership, as well as the Comfort from Companion Animals Scale, the Revised UCLA Loneliness Scale, and the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28). The men lived in the San Francisco area and received assistance from Pets Are Wonderful Support (PAWS), a community organization, in caring for their companion dogs or cats. Participants were a convenience sample of pet owners who volunteered from among 500 PAWS clients and who do not necessarily represent a random sample of men w

Perceived support from AI chatbots and loneliness among higher vocational college students: a short-term three-wave study of social interaction anxiety and perceived social support.

Generative artificial intelligence and AI companion tools are increasingly entering higher vocational college students' learning, emotion regulation, and everyday social communication contexts. This study defines perceived support from AI chatbots as students' subjective experience of receiving support while using AI chat tools, rather than objective social support from real interpersonal sources. A short-term three-wave design was used. Students were recruited through class WeChat groups from four higher vocational colleges in Jiangxi and Guangdong provinces, China, during the spring semester…

Lack of social support, gender and colorectal cancer screening participation across Europe: How do screening programmes mitigate the effect of social support for men and women?

This study investigates how a lack of social support differentially affects men and women's colorectal cancer (CRC) screening participation, considering different screening strategies implemented across European countries. Although health sociology has stressed gender differences in social support and its effects on health behaviours, this was overlooked by cancer screening research. Using a data set of 65,961 women and 55,602 men in 31 European countries, we analysed the effect of social support variables on CRC screening uptake. We found that living alone and lower perceived social support w…
