[Determination of soil organic carbon adsorption coefficients of pollutants using soil column liquid chromatography with stepwise adsorption].

A novel method for the determination of soil organic carbon adsorption coefficients (K(oc)) of pollutants was established using soil column liquid chromatography with stepwise adsorption. With this method the adsorption amount of samples at various concentrations on soil can be obtained in a single experiment. The values of K(oc) can be calculated through adsorption isotherms. The soil column can be used without change or desorption throughout the whole experiment. This method leads to a shorter experimental duration, simplified experimental procedure and experimental error reduction. The valu…

Nocardia asteroides in the soil of Kuwait.

A pilot study was undertaken to determine the occurrence and distribution of pathogenic nocardiae in Kuwaiti soil. A total of 102 soil samples collected from two localities were investigated by the paraffin bait technique. Nocardia asteroides was the only species isolated from 42 (41%) soil samples. None of the isolates fulfilled the criteria required for identification of N. farcinica or N. nova. Thirty one (73.8%) isolates showed equivalent growth at 45 degrees C and 35 degrees C, 17 (40.4%) isolates utilized acetamide for carbon and nitrogen requirements and 3 (7.1%) isolates showed delayed…

Mineralization of carbofuran by a soil bacterium.

A bacterium, tentatively identified as an Arthrobacter sp., was isolated from flooded soil that was incubated at 35 degrees C and repeatedly treated with carbofuran (2,3-dihydro-2,2-dimethyl-7-benzofuranyl N-methylcarbamate). This bacterium exhibited an exceptional capacity to completely mineralize the ring-labeled C in carbofuran to CO(2) within 72 to 120 h in a mineral salts medium as a sole source of carbon and nitrogen under aerobic conditions. Mineralization was more rapid at 35 degrees C than at 20 degrees C. No degradation of carbofuran occurred even after prolonged incubation under ana…

Degradation of quinoline by a soil bacterium.

From garden soil a bacterium was isolated which grew aerobically in mineral salts medium with quinoline as sole C source and NH4+ as N source. During growth with quinoline, 2-hydroxyquinoline accumulated in the culture fluid and later disappeared. Whole cells oxidized 2-hydroxyquinoline, 2,6-dihydroxyquinoline and 2,7,8,-trihydroxyquinoline as rapidly as quinoline and without a lag. Catechol was oxidized more slowly by meta-cleavage but at an increasing rate indicative of adaptation. A number of derivatives of benzene and pyridine were not attacked. Whole cells oxidized 2,7,8,-trihydroxyquinol…

Influence of nitrogen addition on soil respiration and soil properties in urban forests in Hefei city in China.

With the continuous development of urbanization, nitrogen deposition has affected the regeneration capacity of urban forest soil. This study focused on Quercus acutissima Carruth forest in a southern city Hefei in China. The effects of different nitrogen addition rates on both the soil respiration rate and the soil properties of urban forests were studied. In addition, the effects of seasonal changes on soil respiration were also analyzed. The experimental results showed that low nitrogen addition rate (5 g·m-2·yr-1) increased soil respiration rate by about 11% in summer, but decreased it by a…

Efficient PFAS removal from contaminated soils through combined washing and adsorption in soil effluents.

This study investigates soil washing as a viable strategy to remove poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from contaminated soils using various washing agents including water, methanol, ethanol, and cyclodextrin ((2-Hydroxypropyl)-β-cyclodextrin HPCD)). Water was less effective (removing only 30 % of PFAS), especially for long-chain hydrophobic PFAS. Methanol (50 % v/v) or HPCD (10 mg g-1 soil) achieved > 95 % PFAS removal regardless of PFAS type, soil size fraction (0-400 µm or 400-800 µm), or experimental setups (batch or column, at liquid/solid (L/S) = 1). Column optimization studies r…

Overlooked interconversion between tetracyclines and their 4-epimers in soil and effects on soil resistome and bacterial community.

With the widespread use of tetracycline antibiotics (TCs) and the application of manure fertilizer in farmland, TCs and their metabolites especially 4-epimers have been heavily detected in agricultural soil. However, existing studies have focused on the residual and environmental behavior of maternal TCs, and few studies have looked at the ecotoxicity of their 4-epimers in soil. In this study, the degradation and interconversion of tetracycline (TC), oxytetracycline (OTC) and their 4-epimers (4-epitetracycline, ETC; 4-epioxytetracycline, OTC) were revealed. Their effects on antibiotic resistan…

Soil amendments for vanadium remediation: a review of remediation of vanadium in soil through chemical stabilization and bioremediation.

Immobilization of vanadium (V) in soils is one option to prevent groundwater contamination and plant uptake. Phytoremediation, microbial remediation, and chemical stabilization using soil amendments are among the leading environmentally friendly and economically feasible techniques in V remediation. Soil amendments were used to reduce V mobility by immobilizing it in the soil matrix through chemical stabilization, while bioremediation methods such as phytoremediation and microbial remediation were used to remove V from contaminated soils. Vanadium exists in several species and among them V5+ s…

Sorption of As, Cd, and Pb by soil amendments: in situ immobilization mechanisms and implementation in contaminated agricultural soils.

The contamination of agricultural soils by toxic heavy metals, such as As, Cd, and Pb, is of great concern for crop safety as well as environmental and public health. Various adsorbents for the in situ immobilization of these metals have been widely studied, but researches on the potential and superiority of metal adsorption in agricultural soil amendments are still lacking. This study was conducted to investigate the nature of their sorption processes on soil amendments including slaked lime (SL), phosphogypsum (PG), bone meal (BM), and biochar (BC) using a series of laboratory batch tests. T…

Transport Behavior of Cd2+ in Highly Weathered Acidic Soils and Shaping in Soil Microbial Community Structure.

The mining and smelting site soils in South China present excessive Cd pollution. However, the transport behavior of Cd in the highly weathered acidic soil layer at the lead-zinc smelting site remains unclear. Here, under different conditions of simulated infiltration, the migration behavior of Cd2+ in acid smelting site soils at different depths was examined. The remodeling effect of Cd2+ migration behavior on microbial community structure and the dominant microorganisms in lead-zinc sites soils was analyzed using high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA gene amplicons. The results revealed a s…

Influence of temperature change on the immobilization of soil Pb and Zn by hydrochar: Roles of soil microbial modulation.

Considering the potential effect of the ambient temperature on soil microorganisms during heavy metal immobilization by hydrochar, 60 days of soil incubation was conducted to explore the impact of ambient temperature (5, 25, and 35 °C) on the immobilization of Pb and Zn by chitosan-magnetic sawdust hydrochar (CMSH) and magnetic chitosan hydrochar (MCH). The results showed that soil pH was relatively high and total organic carbon (TOC) was slightly lower in the 35 °C treatment. The diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) available state content decreased significantly with the temperature inc…

Soil microbiome disruption reveals specific and general plant-bacterial relationships in three agroecosystem soils.

Soil microbiome disruption methods are regularly used to reduce populations of microbial pathogens, often resulting in increased crop growth. However, little is known about the effect of soil microbiome disruption on non-pathogenic members of the soil microbiome. Here, we applied soil microbiome disruption in the form of moist-heat sterilization (autoclaving) to reduce populations of naturally occurring soil microbiota. The disruption was applied to analyze bacterial community rearrangement mediated by four crops (corn, beet, lettuce, and tomato) grown in three historically distinct agroecosys…

Responses of soil microbial communities to concentration gradients of antibiotic residues in typical greenhouse vegetable soils.

To explore the responses of soil microbial communities to concentration gradients of antibiotic residues in soil, 32 soil samples were collected from a typical greenhouse vegetable production base in Northern China in 2019. The total concentrations of 26 antibiotic residues in these soil samples was 83.24-4237.93 μg·kg-1, of which metabolites of tetracyclines were 23.34-1798.80 μg·kg-1. The total concentrations in 32 samples were clustered into three levels (L: <100 μg·kg-1, M: 100-300 μg·kg-1, H: >300 μg·kg-1) to elucidate the impacts of antibiotic residues on the diversity, structure, compos…

[Characteristics of Mercury Transformation in Soil and Accumulation in Rice Plants in an Acidic Purple Paddy Soil Area].

A pot experiment was conducted to analyze the characteristics of mercury (Hg) accumulation during the rice growth period in acidic purple paddy soil. Results showed that the soil total Hg concentration was stable with time during the rice growth period, while methylmercury (MeHg) increased greatly. Therefore, the ratio of MeHg/THg was mainly affected by MeHg concentration. THg concentration in rice plant parts followed the trend:root > grain > stalk > leaf > husk at the mature grain stage, while MeHg concentration followed grain > root > stalk > leaf > husk. The average of MeHg/THg in rice (24…
