Spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis in the athlete.

Spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis are common causes of back and leg pain in the athletic population. Spondylolysis originates most often in children between 5 and 10 years of age. Many types of athletic activities requiring lumbar extension and rotation place the immature spine at risk for developing these lesions.

Isthmic spondylolisthesis in pycnodysostosis.

Pycnodysostosis is an inborn skeletal syndrome manifested by short stature with a concomitant spinal deformity and by dense sclerotic fragile bones. We report a 35-year-old woman with pycnodysostosis and isthmic spondylolisthesis. Pycnodysostosis should be added to the differential diagnosis of spondylolisthesis.

Occupational spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis.

Spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis are not uncommon causes of low back pain and sciatica among the general population. Symptoms from these complaints also appear to be increasing in frequency among those who participate in competitive sports, especially those resulting in heavy pressures on the lumbar spine. Neural arch dysplasia is often a predisposing factor and there is evidence that genetic factors may play a role. Isthmic spondylolysis and mild spondylolisthesis not exceeding 10 mm can be satisfactorily cured by a simple operation involving screwing of the defect. Younger patients have b…

Traumatic spondylolisthesis of the axis.

A prospective study of 39 patients with traumatic spondylolisthesis of the axis is reported. Classification of the fracture was based on the criteria of White and Punjabi (1978). In previous studies (Effendi et al., 1981; Levine and Edwards, 1985) stability of the undisplaced and slightly displaced fracture was based on flexion/extension radiographs. Union was obtained in all fractures without using a rigid cervical orthosis. We feel that assessing stability dynamically soon after injury when there is marked muscle spasm does not provide an accurate assessment, nor does it not alter the manage…

The surgical reduction of spondylolisthesis.

The Schnöllner operation for reduction of spondylolisthesis was performed through a transversal incision. After removal of the disc, two pedunculus screws with two different threads are inserted. Over these screws the reduction is performed against a slotted sacral plate. The operations were performed at the following levels: 48 at L5-S1, seven at L4-L5, and two at both levels. 70.8% of the patients had preoperative lumboischialgia, 23.3% lumbalgia. Postoperatively, 92.1% were without pain. Twenty-seven patients had preoperative sensory disturbances, while only five had such disorders five yea…

Spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis in children.

Spondylolysis is a common problem found in 5% of the general population. The etiology is a combination of two factors: (1) hereditary predis … ymptoms, the onset usually coincides with the adolescent growth spurt, and similarly progression of spondylolisthesis occurs between the ages of 10 and 15. When symptoms develop, the child may complain of low back pain and to a lesser extent pain in the posterior buttock and thighs, usually without a neurologic deficit. A few seek medical attention because of the p …

Computed tomography in spondylolisthesis.

Fourth generation computed tomography (CT) diagnostic studies were used to investigate or localize, neurologic changes and to clarify the anatomy of slippage in a consecutive series of 31 patients who had spondylolisthesis. Eighteen patients had operative procedures, i.e, either spinal fusions, decompressions, or both, after the CT examinations, and the average follow-up was 25 months. Ten postoperative CT studies were performed to document the correction of the original pathology. Fifteen patients had objective neurologic deficits referable to the spondylolisthesis, of whom CT demonstrated th…
