Assessment of physical education faculty students' knowledge about first aid.

The Physical Education Faculty students are highly exposed to different types of accidents, mainly fracture, sprains, strain, cramp, bleeding and wounds. The present study revealed that more than half of the students had correct knowledge about first aid of three injuries only out of eight namely fracture, cramp and bleeding. Lack of knowledge noted regarding cut wound, penetrating wound, falling, sprains and epistaxis. It is recommended that first aid course should be taught by specialized medical personal and the course content should include theoretical knowledge plus clinical practice of f

Primary Treatment of Ankle Trauma.

In brief Decreasing inflammation and pain associated with an ankle injury is the first goal of treatment. Then success depends on accurately assessing the extent of the injury. With sprains and strains, options include bracing, taping, and range-of-motion exercises. For fractures, the key is knowing when to treat conservatively and when to refer. With any ankle injury, aggressive rehabilitation often produces good results.

Professional Basketball Injuries.

In brief In a ten-year study of 70 professional basketball players, 47 sustained 265 injuries that most frequently occurred during early-season games. Centers, who had the highest injury rate, most frequently injured their backs; guards most frequently injured elbows and knees; and forwards most often injured fingers and knees. Strains and sprains were the most common problems. Most injuries resulted from trauma rather than from training or conditioning errors.

Biomechanical analysis of ankle ligamentous sprain injury cases from televised basketball games: Understanding when, how and why ligament failure occurs.

OBJECTIVES: Ankle sprains due to landing on an opponent's foot are common in basketball. There is no analysis to date that provides a quantification of this injury mechanism. The aim of this study was to quantify the kinematics of this specific injury mechanism and relate this to lateral ankle ligament biomechanics. DESIGN: Case series. METHODS: The model-based image-matching technique was used to quantify calcaneo-fibular-talar kinematics during four ankle inversion sprain injury incidents in televised NBA basketball games. The four incidents follow the same injury pattern in which the play

Specimen-specific computational models of ankle sprains produced in a laboratory setting.

The use of computational modeling to predict injury mechanisms and severity has recently been investigated, but few models report failure level ligament strains. The hypothesis of the study was that models built off neutral ankle experimental studies would generate the highest ligament strain at failure in the anterior deltoid ligament, comprised of the anterior tibiotalar ligament (ATiTL) and tibionavicular ligament (TiNL). For models built off everted ankle experimental studies the highest strain at failure would be developed in the anterior tibiofibular ligament (ATiFL). An additional objec

Fabricating a splint for deep friction massage.

Deep friction massage (DFM) is a therapeutic modality for tendinitis, muscle strains, ligamentous sprains, and capsulitis of the trapezio-first-metacarpal joint. Depending on the stage and site of the lesion, treatment sessions may be as brief as 5 minutes or as long as 20 minutes. Many therapists find DFM to be very effective but state that treatment is very fatiguing to administer. Therapists with hypermobile fingers find it particularly difficult to perform. In order to overcome these two problems, a number of splints have been designed to treat various lesions. This article describes how t

Medical Care and Injury Surveillance in the High School Setting.

In brief: To avoid the bias of injury studies based only on coaches' perceptions, four athletic trainers served in high schools in a two-year study to identify and evaluate all injuries resulting from athletic participation. There were 1,181 injuries in 3,049 participants in 19 sports. Sprains and strains accounted for two thirds of the injuries, and the most common injury was the ankle sprain. Thirty-nine percent of injuries were evaluated by a physician, and 25 injuries required hospitalization. The athletic trainers probably increased physician visits and x-ray examinations and sensitized t…

The Sports Med Foot/Ankle: Not Always a Sprain.

Foot and ankle injuries are among the most common musculoskeletal conditions encountered in both athletic and general populations, accounting for a substantial proportion of emergency and sports medicine visits. These injuries encompass a wide spectrum, from acute ligamentous sprains to more subtle and frequently misdiagnosed conditions such as Lisfranc ligament injuries, tarsal coalitions, and posterior tibial tendon dislocations. The complex anatomy and biomechanics of the foot and ankle, combined with the high functional demands placed upon them during gait and athletic activity, underscore

Problems With Medium-Sized Joints: Neck Conditions.

The incidence of neck pain in US primary care settings ranges from 10% to 21% per year. A key component in evaluation of patients with neck pain is identification of red flag signs or symptoms that indicate the need for urgent evaluation for possible serious conditions. These include fever, unexplained weight loss, trauma, vision changes, new or severe headache, and altered mental status, among others. Patients with acute onset or worsening chronic neck pain without trauma or red flag signs or symptoms should be assessed initially with x-ray. Magnetic resonance imaging study is recommended for
