Antenatal corticosteroid administration for enhancing fetal lung maturity can be expected to induce negative maternal and fetal side-effects. Maternal short-term effects after multiple courses of corticosteroids are an increase of infections and a higher incidence of endometritis and chorionamnionitis in patients with premature rupture of membranes. A retrospective study is presented of 83 athletes with tendo Achillis pain (TAP) treated conservatively over a 12-year period from 1976 to 1988. Local steroid injections did not contribute to an earlier return to sport, though many individuals were improved symptomatically. 11 hepatocellular tumours associated with the long term use of androgenic steroids were reported. Three of the tumours were seen on the basis of diffuse peliosis hepatis. The possible existence of correlations between bone mineral content (BMC), age and serum levels of steroid hormones was investigated. It was found that dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate (DHEA-S), oestradiol (E2) and delta-4-androstenedione (A) were correlated with BMC, whereas oestrone (E1) and testosterone (T) were not. PGE2 and PGF2 alpha secretion in vitro were measured from tissues of patients with breast tumours and examined in relation to oestrogen receptor status. Prostaglandin secretion was significantly greater from malignant breast tumours than from 'normal' breast tissue or benign tumours. Our study of more than 250 women with hepatic tumors, accessioned in our tumor registry at the University of Louisville, disclosed three types of tumor: FNH , HCA, and HCC.
