Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has only relatively recently been introduced into the diagnostic classification of mental disorders. Building on advances in the treatment of other anxiety disorders, a range of effective psychological treatments for PTSD has been developed. The most effective of these treatments focus on the patient's memory for the traumatic event and its meaning. This paper briefly reviews the currently available evidence for these treatments. It then illustrates the process of developing effective psychological treatments by discussing how a combination of phenomenolog

BACKGROUND: Nightmares and insomnia are experienced by 70% of patients suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). These sleep problems are often resistant to treatment and exert a strong negative influence on the quality of life. In the last few decades several studies have reported on the characteristics of sleep disturbances in PTSD.
AIM: To provide an overview of objective features of sleep disturbances - as opposed to self-report methods - in patients with PTSD.
METHOD: Articles on this topic, published in peer-reviewed journals between 1980 and the present, were retrieved fro

Two patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) were treated successfully with the anti-epileptic drug topiramate. Nightmares and the re-experiencing of traumatic events were particularly responsive to the treatment. Topiramate acted rapidly at a relatively low dosage and seems to be an important addition to the limited range of drugs availablefor treating severe symptoms of PTSD.

Treating women suffering from trauma poses significant challenges. The diagnostic prototype of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is based on single-event trauma, such as sexual assault in adulthood. Several effective cognitive- behavioral treatments for such traumas have been developed, although many treated patients continue to experience residual symptoms. Even more problematic is the complex developmental psychopathology stemming from a lifetime history of multiple traumas, often beginning with maltreatment in early attachment relationships. A history of attachment trauma undermines the

When a spontaneous abortion is followed by complicated bereavement, the primary care physician may not consider the diagnosis of acute stress disorder or post-traumatic stress disorder. The major difference between these two conditions is that, in acute stress disorder, symptoms such as dissociation, reliving the trauma, avoiding stimuli associated with the trauma and increased arousal are present for at least two days but not longer than four weeks. When the symptoms persist beyond four weeks, the patient may have post-traumatic stress disorder. The symptoms of distress response after spontan

Six cabin crew attendants who survived an airplane crash in which 47 passengers were killed were assessed for post-traumatic stress disorder and other psychological problems. Each was interviewed 8 months after the crash and completed questionnaires measuring intrusive thoughts, avoidance, depressed mood, anxiety, and fear. Questionnaires were repeated 10 months later. All six met DSM-III-R criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder, reported a wide range of symptoms, and developed a fear of flying 8 months after the crash. Depression scores were normal 18 months after the crash, but all othe

In 1980 the third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders of the American Psychiatric Association (DSM-III) provided the first descriptive classification for post-traumatic stress disorder as a unique diagnostic entity. Since then, many reports describing this condition in Vietnam War veterans have appeared, as well as occasional reports of the disorder after civilian trauma. We have found only one previous report of this disorder as a sequela to thermal injury. This article presents two illustrative case reports of burn victims suffering from post-traumatic stress

BACKGROUND: The reconceptualization of complex post-traumatic stress disorder (cPTSD) has changed how we view substance use disorders (SUDs), highlighting trauma and maladaptive emotion regulation over vulnerability or environment. Trauma-related disorders are common in those with SUDs, but research in India is limited, especially since cPTSD was added to ICD-11.
AIM: This study examined the links between cPTSD symptoms, emotion regulation, and post-traumatic growth (PTG) in SUD patients.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted at a tertiary addiction treatment center in India. For

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) causes debilitating nightmares, flashbacks and anxiety stemming from a catastrophic, often life-threatening traumatic event. Originally described in soldiers exposed to the horrors of battle, PTSD is now recognized in civilian victims of assault, natural disasters and mass casualty events. Most people experiencing trauma do not develop PTSD, so understanding neurobiological mechanisms is crucial to predicting risk and developing targeted treatments. There have been many studies seeking to find biomarkers for PTSD, and their results have converged on severa

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) represents a significant mental health challenge closely associated with the consequences of traumatic experiences. Recently, small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) have been recognized as vital elements in the facilitation of intercellular communication. This review delves into the potential roles and mechanisms of sEVs in PTSD, concentrating on their involvement in neural signaling, immune system reactions, and the modulation of molecular biomarkers related to psychological disorders. By integrating recent research outcomes, this article aims to provide fre

The underlying mechanisms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are still not fully understood, creating significant obstacles for developing effective therapeutic strategies. Recently, ferroptosis, an iron-dependent form of regulated cell death, has been shown to play a role in several psychiatric disorders, such as major depressive disorder (MDD), stress-induced anxiety, Alzheimer's disease (AD), and Parkinson's disease (PD). While direct evidence for the role of ferroptosis in PTSD is still limited, an increasing number of studies suggest that the pathological features of PTSD may trigge

Chronic stress and traumatic events affect the psychological and physiological state of a person. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a type of psychological stress that occurs in critical situations that pose a direct threat to the life of the person and/or his or her loved ones. The prevalence of PTSD is increasing every year due to growing exposure to traumatic factors such as wars, natural disasters, and other crises. These events lead to severe psychological consequences, affecting a rising number of people worldwide. Currently, PTSD can be challenging to treat due to the complex nat

OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to investigate the association between self-reported awake/sleep bruxism, and orofacial pain with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
METHODS: A case-control study with a convenience sample was designed. Participants were recruited from a university-based Trauma Ambulatory. The diagnosis of PTSD was established through a clinical interview and the Structured Clinical Interview (SCID-I/P). Thirty-eight PTSD patients and 38 controls completed the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders Axis-II to categorize awake/sleep bruxism and orofa

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is particularly common in the elderly, including those with cognitive impairments. We need to stress the importance of early detection to better understand the specific signs of this disorder in the elderly. Psychotherapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing are being explored for their effectiveness and adaptability with the elderly. Identifying post-traumatic stress disorder should be a shared responsibility, for the mental health of the elderly.

Effective attention control is essential for behavioral adaptation to different environmental contexts. In Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) altered attention has been described in trauma-related and other emotional contexts. Nevertheless, atypical attention is also seen with neutral stimuli. The mechanisms of attention alterations in PTSD associated with neutral stimuli are poorly understood. The present study investigates alerting and orienting responses in PTSD participants using emotionally neutral stimuli in a saccade eye movement task incorporating both spatially predictable and temp

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating psychiatric condition that develops following exposure to a traumatic event. Individuals with this condition experience numerous physiological and behavioral alterations, including intrusive memories, avoidance of trauma-related stimuli, heightened anxiety, hypervigilance, impaired cognition, elevated resting heart rate and blood pressure, and altered neuroendocrine function, to name a few. In most patients, currently available pharmacological and psychological treatments are insufficient to alleviate the array of symptoms associated with
