Canine angiostrongylosis is a life-threatening disease caused by infection with the metastrongyloid nematode Angiostrongylus vasorum. As animal travel and translocation have increased in recent times, many infectious agents, including A. vasorum, have expanded to new geographic areas. Here we report the first molecularly confirmed case of angiostrongylosis in a translocated dog in Estonia. We also analyse the phylogenetic relationship of the isolate with previously described European isolates and describe the challenges encountered in diagnosing this disease. Given the expanding geographic dis

The murine intestinal nematode Heligmosomoides polygyrus bakeri (Hpb) modulates the host immune response via the Hpb alarmin release inhibitor (HpARI) family (HpARI1/2/3), which acts on interleukin (IL)-33, and the Hpb binds alarmin receptor and inhibits (HpBARI) family (HpBARI and HpBARI_Hom2), which acts on the IL-33 receptor ST2. Here, we find that this immunomodulation is evident only in the first week of infection and affects local and distal tissues. Vaccination with HpARI or HpBARI proteins raises antibody responses that block their immunomodulatory activities: HpARI2 vaccination result

Infection with the lungworm Parafilaroides decorus is ubiquitous among young California sea lions (CSL; Zalophus californianus), and high infection intensity is a significant cause of pulmonary pathology, respiratory distress, morbidity, and mortality. Anthelmintics are a common treatment for stranded CSL exhibiting clinical evidence of pneumonia in the rehabilitation setting. To evaluate the clinical efficacy of anthelmintics in reducing larval lungworm fecal output, 55 stranded pup and yearling CSL were treated with either parenteral moxidectin or oral fenbendazole and compared with a group

Angiostrongylus cantonensis meningitis is a parasitic disease of the central nervous system. Its diagnosis is challenging because it shows nonspecific clinical signs. In Mayotte, France, cases are reported annually, mainly in children. The key indicator is the presence of eosinophilic meningitis. We report the case of an 11-month-old infant seen in Mayotte with altered consciousness and fever. Lumbar puncture revealed an elevated white blood cell count in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) with a 100% lymphocytic formula. A brain computed tomography suggested tuberculosis but did not exclude parasi

Semperula wallacei (Issel, 1874) is a species of terrestrial slug that occurs in southeast China and the Pacific Basin and is the only species of its genus that occurs beyond the Oriental region and to the east of Wallace's line in the Australian region, where it has probably been introduced. In this study, we report for the first time S. wallacei as an intermediate host for Angiostrongylus cantonensis (Chen, 1935) based on histological and molecular analyses of slugs from Tuamasaga, Samoa, deposited at the Medical Malacological Collection (Fiocruz-CMM). DNA was obtained from the deparafinized

Achatina fulica is a species native to East Africa, considered one of the 100 worst invasive alien species in the world. The present study investigated the population of the snail, A. fulica, in a peri-urban area adjacent to the Fiocruz Atlantic Forest Biological Station (EFMA), in Jacarepaguá, Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil, focusing on population dynamics and the nematodes associated with this species. To this end, specimens were collected during four climatic seasons of the years 2021 and 2022 in three fixed 20 m × 10 m plots. The abundance of A. fulica in these areas was evaluated in relatio

INTRODUCTION: Abdominal and neural angiostrongyliasis caused by Angiostrongylus costaricensis and A. cantonensis, respectively, are zoonotic diseases involving snails as intermediate hosts. Colombia has already reported human cases, and the increasing distribution of Lissachatina fulica and Cornu aspersum raises public health concerns due to the potential risk of disease transmission in areas where parasites and hosts coexist.
OBJECTIVE: To identify the presence of Angiostrongylus spp. in snail species L. fulica and C. aspersum in Antioquia, Colombia.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective

The aim of this study was to assess the changes in strongylid communities of domestic horses after two decades of regular anthelmintic treatments; the changes in prevalence and relative abundance of individual strongylid species and their contribution to the observed alterations were estimated. The study was conducted in 2023; data collected in 2004 were used for comparison; 39 horses from two farms in Ukraine (22 horses in 2004 and 17 in 2023) were examined. In total, 18,999 strongylid specimens were collected by in vivo diagnostic deworming method before (in 2004, 9119 specimens) and after (

Angiostrongylus vasorum, commonly known as the French heartworm, is a metastrongyloid parasitic nematode that infects wild and domestic canids. In North America, A. vasorum is endemic to the Canadian island of Newfoundland, but has been expanding to new areas including Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and West Virginia (USA). Two cases of A. vasorum are reported from the state of Tennessee. The first case in a black bear (Ursus americanus) and the second case in a coyote (Canis latrans). The black bear was found dead in Sevier County in November of 2022, while the coyote was trapped and euth

Angiostrongylus cantonensis (the rat lungworm) is a zoonotic parasite of non-permissive accidental (dogs, humans, horses, marsupials, birds) hosts. The 3rd stage larvae (L3s) in the intermediate host (molluscs) act as the source of infection for accidental hosts through ingestion. Larvae can spontaneously emerge from dead gastropods (slugs and snails) in water, which are experimentally infective to rats. We sought to identify the time when infective A. cantonensis larvae can autonomously leave dead experimentally infected Bullastra lessoni snails. The proportion of A. cantonensis larvae that e

BACKGROUND: The lungworm Aelurostrongylus abstrusus infects wild and domestic feline species worldwide and is considered a primary respiratory parasite of cats. Definitive diagnosis is based on the identification of first-stage larvae (L1s) released in faeces approximately 5 to 6 weeks after infection. More recently, serology has been shown to be a diagnostic alternative for A. abstrusus infection in cats. The present study aimed at evaluating the diagnostic performance of serological antibody detection compared to faecal examination for A. abstrusus infection in a population of cats with know

Aelurostrongylus abstrusus, Oslerus rostratus, and Troglostrongylus brevior are nematodes found in the respiratory system of domestic cats and cause a variety of symptoms. All three parasites use the same hosts and niches, and the morphological measurements of their L1s excreted in faeces overlap with each other. In this study, 300 cats brought to Ondokuz Mayıs University Veterinary Teaching Animal Hospital were screened for lungworms by morphological measurements and molecular analyses. The prevalence of the lungworms was found as 1.33% (4/300) for A. abstrusus, 0.66% (2/300) for O. rostratus

In recent years, Angiostrongylus vasorum, Crenosoma vulpis, Eucoleus aerophilus (syn. Capillaria aerophila) and Eucoleus boehmi (syn. Capillaria boehmi), commonly referred to as canine lungworms, have gained a growing interest worldwide as the result of their geographical expansion. Each of these nematode species differs considerably in its biology and pathogenicity. Despite their impact on dogs' health, these parasites are often underdiagnosed owing to diagnostic challenges. Here, we describe the development and validation of a Taq-Man-based multiplex quantitative PCR (qPCR) for the simultane

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a key innate immune mediator with chemokine- and cytokine-like properties in the inflammatory pathway. While its actions on macrophages are well-studied, its effects on other cell types are less understood. Here we report that MIF is required for expansion of intestinal tuft cells during infection with the helminth Nippostrongylus brasiliensis. MIF-deficient mice show defective innate responses following infection, lacking intestinal epithelial tuft cell hyperplasia or upregulation of goblet cell RELMβ, and fail to expand eosinophil, type 2 innat

BACKGROUND: Angiostrongylus cantonensis is also known as rat lungworm. Infection with this parasite is a zoonosis that can cause eosinophilic meningitis and/or eosinophilic meningoencephalitis in humans and may lead to fatal outcomes in severe cases. In this study, we explored the mechanisms of the impairments in the cognitive functions of mice infected with A. cantonensis.
METHODS: In infected mice with different infective intensities at different timepoint postinfection, loss and recovery of cognitive functions such as learning and memory abilities were determined. Neuronal death and damage

Aelurostrongylus abstrusus is a metastrongilid nematode that causes feline aelurostrongylosis. The adult life stage parasitizes the lungs of wild and domestic felids. Terrestrial mollusks act as its intermediate host, and birds, amphibians, and small mammals act as paratenic hosts. Aelurostrongylus abstrusus presents a worldwide distribution, and in Brazil it has been recorded in most states. The present study investigates the occurrence of Aelurostrongylus abstrusus in terrestrial mollusks from urban areas of two out of the six Mesoregions of Rio de Janeiro state: Metropolitana and Centro Flu

Enteric helminths form intimate physical connections with the intestinal epithelium, yet their ability to directly alter epithelial stem cell fate has not been resolved. Here we demonstrate that infection of mice with the parasite Heligmosomoides polygyrus bakeri (Hpb) reprograms the intestinal epithelium into a fetal-like state marked by the emergence of Clusterin-expressing revival stem cells (revSCs). Organoid-based studies using parasite-derived excretory-secretory products reveal that Hpb-mediated revSC generation occurs independently of host-derived immune signals and inhibits type 2 cyt

BACKGROUND: Angiostrongylus cantonensis is the etiological agent of neuroangiostrongyliasis in humans, which is developed in gastropods and vertebrate species, mainly rodents. Human transmission occurs through consumption of molluscs and paratenic hosts infected with L3, and the migration of larvae to the central nervous system causes eosinophilic meningitis. Laboratory diagnosis is based on molecular and immunological tests, using young or adult females as a source of antigens. However, these tests give positive results only after several weeks of symptoms onset and also cross-reactions with

Intestinal parasitic nematodes affect a quarter of the world's population, typically eliciting prominent effector Th2-driven host immune responses. As not all infected hosts develop protection against reinfection, our current understanding of nematode-induced memory Th2 responses remains limited. Here, we investigated the activation of memory Th2 cells and the mechanisms driving early recall responses to the enteric nematode Heligmosomoides polygyrus in mice. We show that nematode-cured mice harbor memory Th2 cells in lymphoid and non-lymphoid organs with distinct transcriptional profiles, exp
