In the title compound, C10H16N2O9S3, the pyrimidine ring of the 1,3-dimethyl barbituric acid moiety has an envelope conformation with the C atom carrying the methyl-sulfonyl and bis-(methyl-sulfon-yl)methyl substituents as the flap. The dihedral angle between mean plane of the pyrimidine ring and the S/C/S plane is 72.4 (3)°. In the crystal, mol-ecules are linked via C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming a three-dimensional structure.

During wine ageing, tannins could react with sulfur dioxide to form sulfonated flavanols which are anticipated to alter tannin binding to proteins contributing to the reduction of astringency during ageing. Sulfonated poly(phthalazinone ether ketones) (SPPEK) with ion exchange capacities from 0.77 to 1.82 mmol·g-1 are synthesized via an electrophilic substitution reaction. Nuclear magnetic resonance and infrared absorption spectroscopy are used to characterize the chemical structure of the obtained polymers for confirming the successful introduction of sulfonic groups. This work describes the depolymerization of poly(vinyl acetate-alt-sulfur dioxide) (PVAS) as initiated by chemical and mechanical stimuli.
