Novel palladium and nickel-sulfur clusters were synthesized using a diamidocarbene-derived carbon disulfide ligand. Structural characterization revealed a tetranuclear metal-sulfur cluster geometry with each metal center exhibiting square-planar coordination. The ligand was redox-active, accommodating oxidation states ranging from 0 to -2.

A series of cell-permeable esterase-sensitive sulfonates that undergo self-immolation to produce sulfur dioxide (SO2), a gaseous pollutant with new and emerging biological roles, is reported. A detailed chemical kinetic model for oxidation of CS2 has been developed, on the basis of ab initio calculations for key reactions, including CS2 + O2 and CS + O2, and data from literature. The mechanism has been evaluated against experimental results from static reactors, flow reactors, and shock tubes. Solid sulfur dioxide was investigated by vibrational spectroscopy over a broad pressure and temperature range, extending to 32.5 GPa at 75-300 K in diamond anvil cells. Synchrotron infrared spectra provided the first measurements of the pressure dependence of the lattice modes in the far-IR region. Methionine and cysteine are precursors of glutathione, which plays an important role in intracellular antioxidant/free radical defenses. Exposures to sulfur dioxide (SO2) have been associated with progressive, dose-dependent bronchoconstriction in sensitive individuals. The clinical significance of such changes remains poorly characterized. Twenty spectra of Io (0.26 to 0.33 micrometer), acquired with the International Ultraviolet Explorer spacecraft, have been studied.
