A Novel Polyamino Acid Sulfur Dioxide Prodrug Synergistically Elevates ROS with β-Lapachone in Cancer Treatment.

Due to the distorted redox balance, cancer cells are considered more vulnerable to excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS). In a variety of oxidative stress-related therapies, gas therapy has emerged as a new therapeutic strategy owing to its efficacy and biosafety. Herein, a newly-discovered gasotransmitter sulfur dioxide (SO2) and a tumor specific ROS generation agent β-lapachone (Lapa) were firstly combined for anticancer therapy. Firstly, amphiphilic glutathione (GSH) responsive polypeptide SO2 prodrug PEG-b-poly(Lys-DNs) was synthesized by ring opening polymerization of SO2-containing N-c

Enhancement of leaching copper by organic agents from waste printed circuit boards in a sulfuric acid solution.

Leaching copper from waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) by hydrometallurgy has always been a hot research topic. At atmospheric pressure, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) was used as an oxidant to study the leaching behavior of copper from WPCBs in sulfuric acid (H2SO4) solution with ethylene glycol (EG). To elucidate the leaching mechanism of copper from WPCBs, the effect of various parameters on the leaching performance with or without EG was investigated. The results showed that the copper leaching process from WPCBs in the presence of EG was found to conform to the ash diffusion-controlled shrin

Sulfur amino acid supplementation displays therapeutic potential in a C. elegans model of Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Mutations in the dystrophin gene cause Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a common muscle disease that manifests with muscle weakness, wasting, and degeneration. An emerging theme in DMD pathophysiology is an intramuscular deficit in the gasotransmitter hydrogen sulfide (H2S). Here we show that the C. elegans DMD model displays reduced levels of H2S and expression of genes required for sulfur metabolism. These reductions can be offset by increasing bioavailability of sulfur containing amino acids (L-methionine, L-homocysteine, L-cysteine, L-glutathione, and L-taurine), augmenting healthspan pr

Synthesis of Non-symmetrical Dispiro-1,2,4,5-Tetraoxanes and Dispiro-1,2,4-Trioxanes Catalyzed by Silica Sulfuric Acid.

A novel protocol for the preparation of non-symmetrical 1,2,4,5-tetraoxanes and 1,2,4-trioxanes, promoted by the heterogeneous silica sulfuric acid (SSA) catalyst, is reported. Different ketones react under mild conditions with gem-dihydroperoxides or peroxysilyl alcohols/β-hydroperoxy alcohols to generate the corresponding endoperoxides in good yields. Our mechanistic proposal, assisted by molecular orbital calculations, at the ωB97XD/def2-TZVPP/PCM(DCM)//B3LYP/6-31G(d) level of theory, enhances the role of SSA in the cyclocondensation step. This novel procedure differs from previously report

Sulfuric acid modified expanded vermiculite cover for reducing ammonia emissions from animal slurry storage.

Animal slurry storage is an important source of NH3 emission which has raised a high attention regarding its influence on air quality and environment health. There is an urgent need to develop an efficient, green and safe technology for reducing NH3 emission. This study introduced a novel method of reducing NH3 emission from dairy slurry storage using H2SO4 modified expanded vermiculite cover (H2SO4-VM1). Results showed that NH3 mitigation of 87% was achieved in the treatment of H2SO4-VM1 during 77 days of slurry storage, which could be mainly caused by conversion of free NH3 to NH4+ in acidif

Myocardial metabolic alterations in mice with diet-induced atherosclerosis: linking sulfur amino acid and lipid metabolism.

Atherosclerosis is a leading cause of cardiovascular disease (CVD), but the effect of diet on the atherosclerotic heart's metabolism is unclear. We used an integrated metabolomics and lipidomics approach to evaluate metabolic perturbations in heart and serum from mice fed an atherogenic diet (AD) for 8, 16, and 25 weeks. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)-based metabolomics revealed significant changes in sulfur amino acid (SAA) and lipid metabolism in heart from AD mice compared with heart from normal diet mice. Higher SAA levels in AD mice were quantitatively verified using liquid chromatograp

Effects of perfluorooctane sulfuric acid on placental PRL-family hormone production and fetal growth retardation in mice.

Perfluorooctane sulfuric acid (PFOS) is a persistent organic pollutant, causes fetal growth retardation but the mechanism is still unclear. This study focused on PFOS-induced toxicity such as placental trophoblast cell histopathological changes, endocrine function (i.e., prolactin (PRL)-family hormone production) and subsequent fetal growth retardation in mice. Maternal body weight gain, placental and fetal weights were significantly decreased in proportion to PFOS dosage. Placental efficiency (fetal weight/placental weight) was significantly reduced dose-dependently. Necrotic changes were obs

Reactive sulfur species: kinetics and mechanism of the reaction of hypothiocyanous acid with cyanide to give dicyanosulfide in aqueous solution.

The chief sources of cyanide (CN(-)) in humans are tobacco and occupationally derived smoke, inflammation [vis-a-vis myeloperoxidase (MPO)-induced chlorination of glycine], and microbial cyanogenesis (including Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection of the cystic fibrosis lung). The human mucosae of healthy individuals are usually protected from infection by innate defense mechanisms that include the defensive peroxidase systems. In the oral cavity, salivary peroxidase and MPO catalyze the oxidation of the pseudohalide thiocyanate (SCN(-)) by hydrogen peroxide to produce the antimicrobial hypothiocy

Dry deposition and heavy acid loading in the vicinity of Masaya Volcano, a major sulfur and chlorine source in Nicaragua.

Certain volcanoes constitute the world's largest sources of SO2, HCl, and HF emissions and contribute significantly to regional acid deposition. However, the impact of volcanic acid emissions to nearby ecosystems remain poorly documented. In this paper, the spatial pattern of acid dry depositions was monitored within 44 km of Masaya Volcano, Nicaragua, with a network of sulfation plates. Measured SO2 deposition rates were <2-791 mg m(-2) day(-1). The plates also collected the dry deposition of HCI at rates of <1-297 mg m(-2) day(-1). A similar deposition velocity Vd (gas transfer) of 1.6 +/- 0

Bioactivation of cyanide to cyanate in sulfur amino acid deficiency: relevance to neurological disease in humans subsisting on cassava.

Neurological disorders have been reported from parts of Africa with protein-deficient populations and attributed to cyanide (CN-) exposure from prolonged dietary use of cassava, a cyanophoric plant. Cyanide is normally metabolized to thiocyanate (SCN-) by the sulfur-dependent enzyme rhodanese. However, in protein-deficient subjects where sulfur amino acids (SAA) are low, CN may conceivably be converted to cyanate (OCN-), which is known to cause neurodegenerative disease in humans and animals. This study investigates the fate of potassium cyanide administered orally to rats maintained for up to

Changes in pulmonary lavage fluid of guinea pigs exposed to ultrafine zinc oxide with adsorbed sulfuric acid.

Ultrafine metal oxide particles (diameters less than 0.1 microns) and sulfur dioxide are important products of coal combustion. Interaction of these products in the effluent stream results in formation of ultrafine particles with adsorbed sulfur compounds, including sulfuric acid. The toxicity of ultrafine zinc oxide particles with adsorbed sulfuric acid was evaluated by comparing pulmonary lavage fluid from guinea pigs exposed for 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 consecutive daily 3-h periods to ultrafine zinc oxide generated in the presence of sulfur dioxide (ZnO + SO2) to pulmonary lavage fluid from guinea

Iron‑sulfur geochemistry and acidity retention in hydrologically active macropores of boreal acid sulfate soils: Effects of mitigation suspensions of fine-grained calcite and peat.

Acid sulfate soils discharge large amounts of sulfuric acid along with toxic metals, deteriorating water quality and ecosystem health of recipient waterbodies. There is thus an urgent need to develop cost-effective and sustainable measures to mitigate the negative effects of these soils. In this study, we flushed aseptically-prepared MQ water (reference) or mitigation suspensions containing calcite, peat or a combination of both through 15-cm-thick soil cores from an acid sulfate soil field in western Finland, and investigated the geochemistry of Fe and S on the surfaces of macropores and in t

Acidification with acetic or sulfuric acid: Effects on NH3 and N2O emission from cattle and pig slurry applied to grassland.

Ammonia (NH₃) emissions from slurry application contribute to air pollution, ecosystem acidification and nitrogen loss, while nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions contribute to climate change. Sulfuric acid is commonly used to reduce NH₃ emissions, but safety concerns and sulfur accumulation in soil have prompted interest in alternatives such as acetic acid. We compared the effects of both acids on NH₃ and N₂O emissions following cattle and pig slurry application to grassland in Denmark. Sulfuric acid was added at 3.0 and 2.9 kg t-1 to cattle and pig slurry, respectively; corresponding acetic acid do

Exogenous salicylic acid promotes the accumulation of volatile sulfur compounds and anti-muscle atrophy activity in garlic sprouts.

BACKGROUND: Despite the wide use of garlic as a spice and medicinal plant, limited information is available on garlic sprouts (GSs), which are rich in bioactive sulfur compounds. Sprouting is an effective process to improve nutritional quality and functional properties by activating metabolic pathways and enhancing secondary metabolite biosynthesis. In addition, elicitation has been applied to stimulate the accumulation of bioactive compounds in sprouts. Among various elicitors, salicylic acid (SA) is a key plant signaling molecule involved in stress responses and secondary metabolism. However

Direct conversion of readily available sucrose to 2,5-diformylfuran by low-cost sulfur and green p-toluenesulfonic acid.

Direct conversion of sucrose to value-added 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) has received a lot of interest lately. In this report, various acids and oxidizing agents were examined for DFF production from carbohydrates. The findings showed that p-toluenesulfonic acid (pTSA) and low-cost sulfur exhibited the highest activities as a catalyst and oxidant, respectively, for the one-pot, one-step synthesis of DFF from sucrose. The first and second steps involve utilizing pTSA to convert sucrose to fructose and fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), which is then selectively oxidized to DFF using sulfur.

Linoleic acid accelerates osteoarthritis progression in male rats by targeting iron-sulfur clusters to drive ferroptosis in chondrocytes.

The development of osteoarthritis (OA) is accompanied by various metabolic disorders, highlighting the need for further investigation into metabolism-related pathogenesis and targeted therapeutic strategies. Herein, we found that linoleic acid (LA), the most abundant essential fatty acid in the diet, accumulates in the blood, synovial fluid, and cartilage tissue of elderly and OA individuals. Notably, LA not only induces ferroptosis in chondrocytes, but it also serves as a risk metabolite, driving OA onset and accelerating the progression of traumatic OA in male rat models. Mechanistically, LA
