Size and Surface Properties of Functionalized Organosilica Particles Impact Cell-Particle Interactions Including Mitochondrial Activity.

Understanding of the interactions between macrophages and multifunctional nanoparticles is important for development of novel macrophage-based immunotherapies. Here, we investigated the effects of fluorescent thiol-organosilica particle size and surface properties on cell-particle interactions, including mitochondrial activity, using the mouse macrophage cell line J774A.1. Three different sizes of thiol-organosilica particles (150, 400, and 680 nm in diameter) containing fluorescein (OS/F150, OS/F400, and OS/F680) and particles surface functionalized with polyethylenimine (PEI) (OS/F150PEI, OS…

Evaluating mechanical and surface properties of zirconia-containing composites: 3D printing, subtractive, and layering techniques.

This study assessed the monotonic and fatigue flexural strength (FS), elastic modulus (E), and surface characteristics of a 3D printed zirconia-containing resin composite compared to subtractive and conventional layering methods. Specimens, including discs (n = 15; Ø = 15 mm × 1.2 mm) and bars (n = 15; 14 × 4 × 1.2 mm), were prepared and categorized into three groups: 3D printing (3D printing - PriZma 3D Bio Crown, Makertech), Subtractive (Lava Ultimate blocks, 3M), and Layering (Filtek Z350 XT, 3M). Monotonic tests were performed on the discs using a piston-on-three-balls setup, while fatigue

Decorating an Anticuboctahedral Copper Kernel with Labile Surface Coatings for Controlling Optical and Catalytic Properties.

Manipulating the interfacial/surface structure of ligand-stabilized atomically precise metal nanoclusters (NCs) is one of the central tasks in nanoscience because surface motifs are directly related to key properties of nanomaterials. Although great progress has been made in engineering the surface of gold and silver nanoclusters, parallel studies on lighter copper analogues hitherto remain unexplored. In this work, we report the design, synthesis, and structure of a new class of copper nanoclusters featuring virtually identical kernels but different surface motifs. The four Cu29 nanoclusters

Tribological Properties of Carbon Fiber-Reinforced PEEK against 304 Stainless Steel with Reticulate Surface Texture.

With the aim of improving the durability and reliability of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) composites reinforced with carbon fiber (CF) as thrust bearings without lubricants, a reticulate surface texture was fabricated by plane honing on a stainless steel (SS) counterpart to promote its tribological properties. Pin-on-disk experiments were designed, with the results showing that the reticulate surface texture effectively reduces the friction coefficient from 0.40 to 0.20 compared with the polished SS surface, within the range of the pv value from 0.185 to 1.85 MPa∙m/s. The wear mechanism of the p

Development of preservative-free nanoparticles-based emulsions: Effects of NP surface properties and sterilization process.

Model emulsions were developed with or without commercial titanium dioxide nanoparticles (NP) carrying various surface treatments in order to get close physicochemical properties whatever the NP surface polarity (hydrophilic and hydrophobic). Rheology and texturometry highlighted that the macroscopic properties of the three formulated emulsions were similar. However, characterizations by optical microscopy, static light scattering and zetametry showed that their microstructures reflected the diversity of the incorporated NP surface properties. In order to use these model emulsions as tools for…

Antioxidation Properties and Surface Interactions of Polyvinylpyrrolidone-Capped Zerovalent Copper Nanoparticles Synthesized in Supercritical Water.

Zerovalent copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) (diameter, 26.5 ± 9 nm) capped with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) were synthesized in supercritical water at 400 °C and 30 MPa with a continuous flow reactor. The PVP-capped CuNPs were dispersed in distilled water, methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, 2-propanol, butanol, and their mixed solvents to study their long-term stability. Temporal variation of UV-vis spectra and surface plasmon resonance were measured and showed that ethanol, the propanols, and butanol solvents provided varying degrees of oxidative protection for Cu(0). Characterization of surface and photooxidative properties of supported metal oxide photocatalysts using solid-state NMR.

In situ solid-state NMR (SSNMR) methodologies have been used to investigate the surface properties and photooxidative reactivities of a number of metal oxide photocatalysts. Adsorption of ethanol on single monolayers of TiO2, SnO2, V205, and WO3 supported on porous Vycor glass results in the formation of hydrogen-bonded ethanol species and metal-bound ethoxide species. The chemical shift of the metal-bound ethoxide species varies with the metal oxide catalyst while the chemical shift of the hydrogen-bonded species is independent of the metal oxide. X-ray powder diffraction, UV-VIS spectroscopy…

Electrokinetic properties and surface membrane sialic acid status of platelets in idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP).

Continuous flow electrophoresis has been used to investigate heterogeneity in the circulating platelets from patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenia (ITP) and from age- and sex-matched control donors. The ITP patients' platelet counts ranged from 15 to 80 X 10(9)/l and they had much higher mean volumes and significantly higher (two-fold) total cell and neuraminidase-labile surface sialic acid contents expressed per unit cell than normal. After volume normalization the mean difference between the two groups was not statistically significant. The relationships of these findings to abnormal thr

Evaluation of Color Stability and Surface Properties of Different CAD/CAM Materials: An In vitro Study.

BACKGROUND: The widespread use of CAD/CAM technologies in dentistry has enabled the application of various restorative materials with differing mechanical and aesthetic characteristics. While lithium disilicate ceramics are known for their strength and translucency, resin-matrix ceramics are preferred for their ease of processing and intraoral repairability. However, their long-term color stability and surface behavior under staining conditions remain insufficiently understood. AIM: This study aimed to evaluate and compare the effects of different staining solutions on the color stability, su

Surface energetics of antibiofilm property of dental material added with green synthesized copper nanoparticles.

Dental caries and lesions are difficult to treat during cement repairs. A remarkable antimicrobial therapeutic biomaterial is needed to fight dental caries and recurrent necrotic lesions. This study used Mentha longifolia extract to synthesize Copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) with distinctive properties at room temperature (22-25 °C). These CuNPs were supplemented with cephalosporin antibiotics that act as a capping agent to explore their synergistic antibacterial potency. These nanoparticles were subjected to FTIR, XRD, UV-Vis spectrophotometry, and SEM for characterisation. These CuNPs capped wi

Adverse effects of sterilization processes on the fundamental topographic properties of modified dental implant surfaces.

The employ of sterilization processes are essential to investigate biomaterials aiming for experimental, preclinical, or clinical applications with biological tissues. However, responsive surface properties of biomaterials may be susceptible to sterilization processes, compromising important physio-chemical characteristics. For that reason, this in vitro study aimed to investigate the effects of three different processes for sterilization (humid heat under pressure, UVC-light exposure, and Gamma irradiation) on the major topographical properties of implant surfaces applied to dental bone-ancho…

Effect of Substrates Performance on the Microstructure and Properties of Phosphate Chemical Conversion Coatings on Metal Surfaces.

Phosphate chemical conversion (PCC) technology has attracted extensive attention for its ability to regulate the surface properties of biomedical metals. However, titanium (Ti)-based alloys exhibit inertia because of the native passive layer, whereas zinc (Zn)-based alloys show high activity in acidic PCC solutions. The substrate performance affects the chemical reaction in the phosphating solution, which further leads to diversity in coating properties. In this work, the zinc-phosphate (ZnP) coatings are prepared on Ti alloy (TA) and Zn alloy (ZA) substrates using the PCC method, respectively…

Regulation of nitrite reductase and lipid binding properties of cytoglobin by surface and distal histidine mutations.

Cytoglobin is a hemoprotein widely expressed in fibroblasts and related cell lineages with yet undefined physiological function. Cytoglobin, as other heme proteins, can reduce nitrite to nitric oxide (NO) providing a route to generate NO in vivo in low oxygen conditions. In addition, cytoglobin can also bind lipids such as oleic acid and cardiolipin with high affinity. These two processes are potentially relevant to cytoglobin function. Little is known about how specific amino acids contribute to nitrite reduction and lipid binding. Here we investigate the role of the distal histidine His81 (E

Investigation of plasma treatment on UHMWPE surfaces: Impact on physicochemical properties, sterilization and fibroblastic adhesion.

Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is a prevailing bearing material applied in joint arthroplasty. Despite not being a novel biomaterial, its debris as consequence of long application and surface properties usually still lead to short lifespan. Many of the drawbacks are associated with sterilization methods that degrade the surface properties of UHMWPE. This work aims at improving the sterilizing treatment and also increasing material wettability, without losing bulk properties, which are essential for an orthopedic bearing. Cold plasma in hollow cathode setting was used for the…
