Epidural spinal cord compression was visualized myelographically in a dog presented for rapid development of paraparesis. A large, fluid-filled pocket in the epaxial musculature was found at surgery and appeared to communicate with the first lumbar vertebra. Unfortunately, cytopathological evaluation of the fluid was not performed. No etiological agents were isolated on aerobic culture. The dog responded well to decompressive surgery and medical therapy consisting of antibiotics, pain medication, and nursing care. In the veterinary literature, only two studies of spinal epidural empyema in the

Fibular head instability is a rare, isolated injury in veterinary medicine, with no previous case reports in the veterinary literature. The fibular head is secured proximo-distally by the lateral collateral ligament and craniocaudally by the cranial and caudal fibular head ligaments. A 1-year-old, 26-kg, spayed female border collie mix dog was referred for chronic bilateral Salter Harris-II tibial tuberosity avulsion fractures. The dog was non-weight-bearing on the right pelvic limb, with pain and mobility localized to the right fibular head. Preoperative radiographs showed no fibular patholog

While osteomyelitis is not uncommon in veterinary patients, emphysematous osteomyelitis, characterized by the presence of intramedullary gas, is scarcely reported in both veterinary and human literature. This report documents two cases in young, previously healthy dogs that were presented with clinical signs related to infection/inflammation. Multiple imaging modalities were utilized in the workup of one case, while computed tomography (CT) was used as the sole modality in the second. In both cases, peri-femoral abscessation with intramedullary gas was identified, and positive bacterial cultur

Here we describe the successful surgical implementation of antibiotic-impregnated polymethylmethacrylate beads in a rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) with marked osteomyelitis. The macaque presented to the veterinary clinic with grossly contaminated bite wounds in the left ankle secondary to conspecific trauma. Radiographic findings were highly suggestive of osteomyelitis. Additional differential diagnoses included bony infarct, fracture, and cellulitis. In light of the location of the lesion and extensive tissue trauma, the animal had a poor prognosis. Systemic, broad-spectrum antibiotics were

A 19-year-old male ostrich (Struthio camelus) was referred to a veterinary teaching hospital (São Paulo State University, Botucatu, Brazil) due to a 6-month history of recurrent prolapse of the phallus. On physical examination, 2 ulcerative wounds were present on the phallus, as well as caseous plaques and myiasis. Conservative treatment resulted in improvement but prolapse of the phallus remained. Thus, a decision was made to perform a partial phallectomy. The surgery was successful and no postoperative complications occurred. When the ostrich was reexamined 6 months postsurgery, the ostrich

Cancer remains the leading cause of death in domestic dogs. Conventional therapeutic approaches, including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, frequently fail to achieve sustained remission or stabilization. Oncolytic virotherapy, a rapidly advancing therapeutic modality in human oncology, is emerging as a novel strategy in veterinary medicine. This systematic review summarizes current knowledge on the application of oncolytic viruses (OVs) in canine cancer treatment, focusing on their mechanisms of action, safety profiles, and clinical efficacy. We evaluate diverse OV platforms, includin

OBJECTIVE: Current cystotomy methods often implement the use of off-label devices, resulting in urocystolith extraction difficulty and potentially leading to postoperative complications and discomfort for the patient. The objective of this study was to create 3 novel 3-D printed cystotomy spoons that offer a dedicated solution for removing urocystoliths from a patient's urinary bladder.
ANIMALS: Clinical use of the 3 novel 3-D printed cystotomy spoons were ultimately evaluated in 4 dogs and 1 cat that presented for urocystotlith removal at 3 different veterinary hospitals in northwest Arkansa

INTRODUCTION: The widespread consensus for the management of isolated sublingual sialocoeles (ranulas) is to perform mandibular and sublingual sialoadenectomy, despite limited evidence to support this recommendation over ranula marsupialisation alone.
OBJECTIVES: To describe the outcomes and complications associated with marsupialisation alone for the management of isolated ranulas in dogs.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective case series. Electronic records of five veterinary referral hospitals and one peripatetic ECVS diplomate were searched between January 2009 and May 2023 for dogs that

OBJECTIVE: To determine what veterinary students in Australia and New Zealand consider important competences in companion animal welfare and ethics (AWE) required on their first day of practice, and to explore how their priorities relate to gender and stage of study.
METHODS: Undergraduate students at all veterinary schools in Australia and New Zealand were sent an online survey. A subset of questions required participants to rank the importance of preselected AWE topics pertaining to companion animals. Data were analysed to determine differences in the way students of different gender or aca

A Swiss mountain dog, ~3 y old, was brought to a veterinary clinic because of a progressive enlargement of the abdomen. Upon clinical examination, a large mass was detected. After surgical extraction, the mass was confirmed to be a large ovarian teratoma. The weight of the tumor was > 16% of the dog's overall body weight. The dog recovered fully after surgery. The observations from this case suggest that, although teratomas are rare, prompt and accurate diagnosis is necessary to prevent further growth of these masses and to ensure positive outcomes.

The preoperative detection of abdominal adhesions could influence surgical planning; however, imaging features of abdominal adhesions are minimally described in the veterinary literature. The purpose of this retrospective, diagnostic case-control study is to determine the preoperative CT imaging signs associated with surgically-confirmed, severe adhesions in dogs with abdominal masses. Dogs undergoing contrast-enhanced CT and surgery for abdominal masses from 2012 to 2022 were included in the study. Surgical records were evaluated and retrospectively reviewed by a board-certified surgeon to de

A 15-year-old, spayed female, Scottish Straight cat without any traumatic history was presented with swollen abdomen and diagnosed as an abdominal wall hernia. Abdominal ultrasound revealed thickened, irregular, and hypoechoic change of abdominal wall muscle adjacent to defect. During the herniorrhaphy, multiple nodules were identified in the subcutaneous tissue around the defect. Histological examination of the nodular tissue was performed, and it was confirmed as mammary gland tumor. After the surgery, metastatic changes of the pancreas were identified, and pleural effusion and ascites were

Perioperative patients can be highly dynamic and have various metabolic, physiologic, and organ system derangements that necessitate smart monitoring strategies and careful fluid therapy. The interplay between changing patient status, therapeutic interventions, and patient response makes effective monitoring crucial to successful treatment. Monitoring the perioperative patient and an approach to fluid therapy are discussed in this text.

INTRODUCTION: In veterinary medicine, cancer is the leading cause of death in companion animals, and mammary gland tumors represent the most common neoplasm in female dogs. Several epidemiological risk factors, such as age, breed, hormones, diet, and obesity have been reported to be relevant for canine mammary tumors. Nowadays, the gold standard for diagnosis of canine mammary tumors is the pathological examination of the suspected tissue. However, tumor grade can only be assessed after surgical removal or biopsy of the altered tissue. Therefore, in cases of tumors that could be surgically rem

Pathologic lesions of the orbitozygomaticomaxillary complex (OZMC) and caudal oral cavity can be a challenge in veterinary oromaxillofacial surgery. Neoplastic lesions that are in close proximity to or invading the orbit may result in significant loss of structural integrity after curative intent surgery. This in turn may alter the topography of the bulbous oculi (globe) with resultant enophthalmos, diplopia, and entropion. Historically, orbital exenterations have been deemed a suitable option to avoid these complications. However, lesions that do not include the globe in the surgical margin m
