Sympathetic nervous system responses to acute psychosocial stress in male physicians with clinical burnout.

BACKGROUND: Occupational burnout has been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, with sympathetic nervous system (SNS) dysfunction as one explanation. This study examined the effects of burnout on responses of SNS activity measures to acute psychosocial stress in male physicians, a population at risk for burnout. METHODS: Study participants were 60 male physicians, 30 with clinical burnout, assessed with the Maslach Burnout Inventory, and 30 without burnout (controls). All participants underwent the 15-min Trier Social Stress Test. Heart rate, blood pressure, salivary al…

There is also evidence implicating increased sympathetic nervous system activity (SNA) in this maternal disorder, but this mostly includes data correlating severity of disease with catecholamine levels and elevated muscle SNA. These measurements have not confirmed a causative role for SNA in the pathogenesis of preeclam …

Nonselective blocking of the sympathetic nervous system decreases detrusor overactivity in spontaneously hypertensive rats.

The involuntary dual control systems of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) in the bladder of awake spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) we … O to 1.90 ± 0.86 cm H(2)O (p < 0.05). This suggests that the DO originating from the overactive parasympathetic nervous system is attenuated by the nonselective blocking of the sympathetic nervous system. The detailed mechanism behind this result is still not known, but parasympathetic overactivity seems to require overactive sympathetic nervous system activity in a kind of …

Sympathetic nervous system plays an important role in the relationship between immune mediated diseases.

UNLABELLED: T helper (Th) lymphocytes have been classified into distinct subsets, Th1 and Th2 on the basis of the cytokines they produce. According to the cross-regulatory properties of Th1 and Th2 cells, one would assume that to be affected by a Th1 type disease increases susceptibility to a Th1 type disease and inhibits a Th2 type disease and vice versa about being affected by a Th2 type disease. However, the pattern of related diseases does not necessarily follow the conventional pattern of inhibitory effects of Th1 and Th2 immune responses on each other. For example, Mycobacteria including

Hypotensive effect of taurine. Possible involvement of the sympathetic nervous system and endogenous opiates.

We studied the role of diminished sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity and endogenous opiate activation in the hypotensive action of taurine, a sulfur amino acid, in deoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA)-salt hypertensive rats. Supplementation of taurine could prevent the development of DOCA-salt hypertension in rats, but failed to change blood pressure in vehicle-treated control rats. Cardiac NE turnover, which was determined from the rate of decline of tissue NE concentration after the administration of alpha-methyl-p-tyrosine, was markedly accelerated in DOCA-salt rats, but 1% taurine sup…

Role of sympathetic nervous system in hypotensive action of taurine in DOCA-salt rats.

We tested the hypothesis that the antihypertensive effects of dietary taurine supplementation in deoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA)-salt rats may be attributed to the suppression of sympathetic nervous system activity. In uninephrectomized rats treated with DOCA while receiving 1% NaCl solution for 2 weeks, systolic blood pressure was significantly increased as compared with that in control rats treated with vehicle suspension and tap water. Sympathetic nervous system activity was assessed by tissue norepinephrine turnover, which was determined from the rate of decline of tissue norepinephrine…

Increased sympathetic nervous system activity in rat spleen and heart following vitamin A depletion.

The effect of vitamin A depletion on the functional state of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) was evaluated in rats. Urinary excretion of norepinephrine (NE) and epinephrine (E) significantly increased in the vitamin A-depleted rats. Vitamin A depletion caused a significant increase in NE turnover in heart and spleen, which was determined from the rate of fall in NE content in these tissues after blockade of NE biosynthesis. In rats rendered vitamin A depleted there was a loss in the number of beta-adrenergic receptors in the spleen with a concomitant decrease in the apparent KD for the re…

Modulating Sympathetic Nervous System With the Use of SGLT2 Inhibitors: Where There Is Smoke, There Is Fire?

Heart failure (HF) has become even more prevalent in recent years, because of improved diagnostics and an increase in the risk factors predi … crocirculation, endothelial dysfunction, and inflammation. More recently, the role of SGLT2i on the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) is starting to be recognized, especially because observations of retained or reduced heart rate despite volume contraction have been noted by investigators in the large clinical trials testing the safety and efficacy of these agents. Both prec …

Circadian Regulation of IOP Rhythm by Dual Pathways of Glucocorticoids and the Sympathetic Nervous System.

PURPOSE: Elevated IOP can cause the development of glaucoma. The circadian rhythm of IOP depends on the dynamics of the aqueous humor and is synchronized with the circadian rhythm pacemaker, that is, the suprachiasmatic nucleus. The suprachiasmatic nucleus resets peripheral clocks via sympathetic nerves or adrenal glucocorticoids. However, the detailed mechanisms underlying IOP rhythmicity remain unclear. The purpose of this study was to verify this regulatory pathway. METHODS: Adrenalectomy and/or superior cervical ganglionectomy were performed in C57BL/6J mice. Their IOP rhythms were measur

Hypofunction of the Sympathetic Nervous System as a Possible Etiologic Cause of Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis.

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis is a common disorder of the oral mucosa. The symptoms can range from a minor nuisance to severe forms that can be extremely debilitating. Two cases of chronic aphthous stomatitis are described. The patients sought help to ameliorate vasomotor symptoms. A diagnosis of sympathetic nervous system hypofunction was established. Treatment was aimed at restoring normal sympathetic function by the administration of dextroamphetamine sulfate. Since the patients have been on the amphetamine salts, neither their vasomotor symptoms nor their aphthous lesions have returned. Hy…

The effect of the sympathetic and sensory nervous system on active eustachian tube function in the rat.

CONCLUSION: We propose that simultaneous activation of the sensory and sympathetic nervous system may adversely affect eustachian tube function, which may have a role in the genesis of Ménière's disease. OBJECTIVE: We have determined the distribution of sympathetic and nociceptive sensory axons in the mucosa of the rat eustachian tube and investigated whether sympathetic or nociceptive neurons influence the function of the eustachian tube. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We tested whether the ability of a rat to equalize air pressure in the middle ear during evoked swallowing was altered by activatio…

The role of the sympathetic nervous system and uncoupling proteins in the thermogenesis induced by 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine.

Body temperature regulation involves a homeostatic balance between heat production and dissipation. Sympathetic agents such as 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, ecstasy) can disrupt this balance and as a result produce an often life-threatening hyperthermia. The hyperthermia induced by MDMA appears to result from the activation of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid/adrenal axis. Norepinephrine release mediated by MDMA creates a double-edged sword of heat generation through activation of uncoupling protein (UCP3) along with alpha1- and beta3-adren…

The sympathetic nervous system is involved in the inhibitory effect of morphine on the colon motility in rats.

The role of the sympathetic nervous system in the inhibitory effect of morphine on colonic motility was investigated in male adult Wistar rats. The responses of colonic motility and blood pressure to the intravenous administration of morphine under urethane anesthesia were recorded. Sympathectomy (6-hydroxydopamine) or pretreatment with phentolamine, an alpha-adrenoreceptor antagonist (3.15 microM/kg, i.v.), or propranolol, a beta-adrenoreceptor antagonist (3.38 microM/kg, i.v.), on the inhibitory effect of intravenously administered morphine on colonic motility were observed. The results of t…

Reduced activity, reactivity and functionality of the sympathetic nervous system in fibromyalgia: An electrodermal study.

Alterations in autonomic activity are well established in fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). Previous studies found reduced parasympathetic activity and sympathetic reactivity to physical and stress manipulations. However, sympathetic activity at rest has not been well studied in FMS. Sweating is exclusively controlled by sympathetic mechanisms. In this study, skin conductance (SC), as an indirect measure of sweating, was analyzed in 45 women with FMS and 38 healthy women. Tonic SC levels were recorded during a 4-minute rest period, and a breathing maneuver consisting of deep breathing with posterio

Fifty years of microneurography: learning the language of the peripheral sympathetic nervous system in humans.

As a primary component of homeostasis, the sympathetic nervous system enables rapid adjustments to stress through its ability to communicate messages among organs and cause targeted and graded end organ responses. Key in this communication model is the pattern of neural signals emanating from the central to peripheral components of the sympathetic nervous system. But what is the communication strategy employed in peripheral sympathetic nerve activity (SNA)? Can we develop and interpret the system of coding in SNA that improves our understanding of the neural control of the circulation? In 1968…
