Do physical symptoms predict psychological issues in patients with cancer?: the Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale-Short Form.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine if individual physical symptoms were predictive of psychological disorders. METHODS: This study was a secondary analysis of data from two studies which used the Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale-Short Form (MSAS-SF) to assess both physical and psychological symptoms. Correlation between individual symptoms and the validated psychological subscale (MSAS-PSYCH) were performed using Spearman's coefficient. Linear regression analysis was performed to assess whether correlated symptoms predicted the presence of psychological disorders. RESULTS: 1507 patie…

Validation of the Utah Photophobia Symptom Impact Scale (version 2) as a headache-specific photophobia assessment tool.

OBJECTIVE: To present an updated version of the Utah Photophobia Symptom Impact Scale version 2 (UPSIS2), providing robust clinical and psychometric validation, to improve headache-specific evaluation of light sensitivity and headache-related photophobia. BACKGROUND: The original UPSIS filled a gap in available tools for assessment of headache-associated light sensitivity by providing patient-reported evaluation of the impact of light sensitivity on activities of daily living (ADLs). We have since revised the original questionnaire to provide a more robust item construct and refined validatio

Oral symptoms in patients with advanced cancer: an observational study using a novel oral symptom assessment scale.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to utilise a novel oral assessment tool (the Oral Symptom Assessment Scale/OSAS) to investigate oral symptoms in a cohort of advanced cancer patients receiving specialist palliative care. METHODS: Participants were asked to complete the OSAS, which asks about the presence of 20 oral symptoms in the previous week (and, if present, about the frequency, the severity, and the amount of distress caused by the symptoms). Patients were also asked to complete the Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale - Short Form, and to rate their performance status. RESULTS: Two hund…

The Experience Sampling Method--a new digital tool for momentary symptom assessment in IBS: an exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Retrospective questionnaires are frequently used for symptom assessment in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients, but are influenced by recall bias and circumstantial and psychological factors. These limitations may be overcome by random, repeated, momentary assessment during the day, using electronic Experience Sampling Methodology (ESM). Therefore, we compared symptom assessment by ESM to retrospective paper questionnaires in IBS patients. METHODS: Twenty-six IBS patients (Rome III) were included, of which 16 were diagnosed with panic disorder (DSM-IV-TR). Patients scored symp…

Confirmatory factor analysis of the Adult Asperger Assessment: the association of symptom domains within a clinical population.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a behaviourally defined disorder characterised by impairments in three domains of social interaction, communication, and repetitive, stereotyped behaviours and activities. Proposed changes to diagnostic criteria suggest that the diagnostic triad may no longer fit as the best way to conceptualise ASD, and that social and communication impairments should be considered as a single domain. The aim of this study was to examine the structure of symptom domains within the Adult Asperger Assessment (AAA; Baron-Cohen, Wheelwright, Robinson, & Woodbury-Smith, 2005), a d

Is Roux-en-Y gastric bypass safe after previous antireflux surgery? Technical feasibility and postoperative symptom assessment.

BACKGROUND: Clinically significant morbid obesity is associated with an increased risk of gastroesophageal reflux disease. Vertical Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGBP) is known to eliminate acid (and bile) in the pouch of cardia, which would provide control of reflux symptoms. The aim of our study was to assess the technical considerations, morbidity, and safety of RYGBP after previous antireflux surgery and evaluate postoperative reflux symptoms. METHODS: Retrospective review of all patients undergoing RYGBP after previous antireflux surgery from three institutions. Follow-up (mean 18 months) d

Assessment of symptom exacerbations in a longitudinal study of children with Tourette's syndrome or obsessive-compulsive disorder.

OBJECTIVES: The severity of tic and obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms varies over time. Consequently, how do we, as clinicians, know when a change in symptom severity occurs that falls outside of the normal range of fluctuation? The goal of this study was to describe the level of symptom severity fluctuation over time and to establish an objective, prospective, and quantitative method for identifying symptom exacerbations in children with Tourette's syndrome, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), or both. A second major aim was to assess whether fluctuations in tic and OC symptom severity cova

Toward the third generation of negative symptom assessment in schizophrenia: A systematic review of digital phenotyping measures.

BACKGROUND: Interview-based clinical rating scales are the primary means of assessing negative symptoms in schizophrenia (SZ). However, this methodology has several inherent issues that limit their utility. New methodologies, referred to as digital phenotyping, are emerging in mobile assessment that address these limitations. In this systematic review, we synthesize the literature on the use of digital phenotyping to measure negative symptoms in SZ. STUDY DESIGN: We reviewed available research from the past 27 years on active and passive digital phenotyping in SZ extracted from Pubmed, Web of

Development of a symptom assessment scale for moderate-to-severe burn patients in rehabilitation: A Delphi study.

BACKGROUND: Burn injuries pose a major global public health challenge, causing significant physical and psychological harm. Comprehensive symptom assessment is critical for the effective rehabilitation of moderate-to-severe burn patients, but existing tools lack specificity for their unique symptom profile during rehabilitation. This study aimed to develop a targeted symptom assessment scale for these patients, addressing the gap in specialized evaluation tools. METHODS: The Delphi technique was used to determine the content of the Symptom Assessment Scale for Moderate-to-Severe Burn Patients…

Informant bias and the invisible symptoms in childhood trauma assessment: introducing the symptom visibility-informant bias framework.

Background: Assessing childhood trauma involves persistent methodological and ethical challenges. Many trauma-related symptoms are internal, developmentally shaped, or context-dependent, making them difficult to observe, report, or interpret. Assessment further relies on multiple informants whose perspectives are partial and unevenly aligned with children's lived experiences. Objective: The paper develops the Symptom Visibility-Informant Bias (SVIB) Framework for Childhood Trauma Assessment to explain how trauma-related symptoms may become visible, invisible, or misclassified across child, care

Risk Assessment of Somatic Symptom Disorder Among Patients Attending a Family Medicine Practice in an Academic Center.

The prevalence of somatic symptom disorder (SSD) among primary care patients is a significant concern. Despite advancements in medical services, many patients with unexplained symptoms remain undetected in primary care settings. This underscores the urgent need to improve detection rates and identify relevant factors associated with SSD. The study aimed to assess the prevalence of SSD, and the risk factors associated with its development among adult patients in primary care practice. This cross-sectional study was conducted in September 2023 across seven clinics within the Department of Family

Assessment of Autonomic Dysfunction in Patients With Empty Nose Syndrome Using the Composite Autonomic Symptom Scale-31.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Empty nose syndrome (ENS) can occur as a consequence of aggressive turbinate surgery. However, some patients with similar surgical histories do not develop ENS, suggesting that host-related factors may contribute to its onset. Dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS), which innervates the nasal mucosa, may play a role in triggering ENS. This study used the Composite Autonomic Symptom Scale-31 (COMPASS 31) questionnaire to compare ANS dysfunction between patients with ENS and asymptomatic controls. METHODS: Twenty-six patients with ENS and 43 control parti

Reevaluation of the Acute Cystitis Symptom Score, a Self-Reporting Questionnaire. Part II. Patient-Reported Outcome Assessment.

This study aimed to reevaluate the Acute Cystitis Symptom Score (ACSS). The ACSS is a self-reporting questionnaire for the clinical diagnosis of acute uncomplicated cystitis (AC) and the assessment of symptomatic changes after therapy in female patients with AC. The part II of the present study was to reevaluate the utility of the different domains of the ACSS after therapy. The applicability of these domains in assessing changes in symptoms, as a function of time, in this population was investigated. The ACSS was evaluated in 48 female patients (mean age 31.1 ± 10.6) in the Uzbek and Russian

Characteristics of panic attack subtypes: assessment of spontaneous panic, situational panic, sleep panic, and limited symptom attacks.

We report the analyses of daily journal descriptions of 790 self-defined panic attacks from 59 patients meeting DSM-III criteria for panic disorder or agoraphobia with panic attacks. The DSM-III-R specified symptoms occurred with frequencies ranging from choking (17% of attacks) to palpitations (63% of attacks). The mean weekly panic attack severity correlated significantly with the number of symptoms per attack, but not their weekly frequency. Within a given person, situational and spontaneous panic attacks did not significantly differ over a number of characteristics, including severity, dur
