Taeniasis, cysticercosis and echinococcosis/hydatidosis in Nigeria: I--prevalence of human taeniasis, cysticercosis and hydatidosis based on a retrospective analysis of hospital records.

A retrospective analysis of hospital records in 3 ecological zones of Nigeria was carried out to ascertain the prevalence of human taeniasis, cysticercosis and hydatidosis. The prevalence of Taenia infection in Sudan, Bauchi Plateau and Northern Guinea zones was 0.9%, 0.6% and 0.6%, respectively. The prevalence of human taeniasis by age and sex in the 3 ecological zones indicates that males were more often infected. Because males by habit eat more "suya" (half-grilled beef) than females, they are more likely to be exposed to Taenia saginata cysts. As for age factor, Taenia infection was more c…

About human taeniasis and Taenia saginata diagnosis by endoscopy.

Nested PCR for specific diagnosis of Taenia solium taeniasis.

Taeniasis due to Taenia solium is a disease with important public health consequences, since the larval stage is not exclusive to the animal intermediate, the pig, but also infects humans, causing neurocysticercosis. Early diagnosis and treatment of T. solium tapeworm carriers is important to prevent human cysticercosis. Current diagnosis based on microscopic observation of eggs lacks both sensitivity and specificity. In the present study, a nested-PCR assay targeting the Tso31 gene was developed for the specific diagnosis of taeniasis due to T. solium. Initial specificity and sensitivity test…

Cysticercosis/taeniasis: recent advances in serological and molecular diagnoses.

Serodiagnosis by immunoblot, using recombinant chimeric T. solium antigen and native glycoprotein antigens, has been applied for neurocysticercosis cases. Specific antibodies against both antigens were detected in serum samples from NCC patients involving multiple cysts in the brain, whereas it was not always easy to detect specific antibodies in NCC cases with a solitary cyst or calcified lesion(s). On the other hand, the diagnosis for human taeniasis or worm carriers has been routinely performed by stool examination. In this study, multiplex PCR has been established to differentiate taeniasi…

Epidemiology of intestinal taeniasis in four, rural, Guatemalan communities.

There is relatively little epidemiological information on human intestinal taeniasis, particularly that due to Taenia solium. The current study involved analysis of data collected from four, rural communities in the Department of Jutiapa, Guatemala, between 1991 and 1994. Overall, 92 cases of intestinal taeniasis were identified, giving a mean prevalence of 2.7% (92/3399). Almost all (98%) of the 56 worms identified to species level were T. solium. Female subjects were significantly more likely to be infected than males, with a relative risk of 1.21 (95% confidence interval = 1.04-1.42; P < 0.…
