Teaching family practice residents breast cyst aspiration.

OBJECTIVE: To conduct the first study of teaching family practice residents the technique of breast cyst aspiration (BCA) using the Toronto Breast Cyst Aspiration Model (TBCAM) in a workshop. To determine whether this training increases their likelihood of performing the procedure in the future. To discover how residents evaluate the workshop as a teaching method. DESIGN: Prospective parallel-group trial from August to November 1997. Baseline questionnaires were given to both experimental and control groups in August. Teaching refusal skills to sexually active adolescents.

Refusal skills training was extended to sexually active handicapped female adolescents who lacked an effective refusal strategy. Role-plays for assessment and training were developed using the who, what, when and where of situations which resulted in unwanted intercourse. Refusal skills were trained following the format of rationale, modeling, rehearsal, feedback, and reinforcement. Baseline rates of most target behaviors were quite low. High frequencies of target behaviors were observed as each behavior became the focus of training. Generalization across staff and time was also observed. The

Teaching differential diagnosis to beginning clinical students.

Beginning clinical students cannot construct differential diagnoses the way more experienced students and physicians do because students lack knowledge and experience. Beginning students need a systematic framework for constructing a differential diagnosis. Such a framework can be developed using a two-dimensional grid, one axis being anatomic (referring to organs or structures), and the other listing types of disease (e.g., congenital, metabolic, infectious). Possible diagnoses that can explain major symptoms can then be fitted into the resulting grid. Examples are shown in this report for ab

[Using theater to teach palliative care].

Despite the benefits of palliative care, a number of myths still persist, hindering its implementation. This led to the idea of innovating how we teach through a project that aims to improve understanding of palliative care using theatrical art. This article describes the co-creation of a play and its presentation in medical and nursing courses. To assess the impact of the intervention on the level of interest and knowledge of palliative care, we used a pre- and post-performance questionnaire, the result of which suggests an improvement in these two elements. Feedback received after the event

Machine learning and machine teaching in histopathology.

An artificial intelligence (AI) platform was trained by a consultant histopathologist to classify whole slide images (WSIs) of large bowel biopsies. Six medical students viewed WSIs of five large bowel biopsy cases and assigned the WSIs to one of the nine diagnostic categories. Then the students compared their answers with those generated by the AI. This training was repeated for a total of six rounds of five cases, and the accuracy of the students was recorded for each round. Each case had one or more WSIs. The student with the best final accuracy was asked to describe the morphological featu

Data were collected regarding patient characteristics, preceding clinical state, presumed causes and outcomes of arrests. We also compared outcomes of respiratory arrests to that of cardiac arrests occurring over the same period. RESULTS: We identified 82 respiratory arrests, occurring at a rate of 0.57/1000 inpatient …
