Embryotoxic and teratogenic effects were found in OTA-treated pregnant Swiss albino mice, which were particularly strong at OTA contamination levels of 20 ppm (corresponding to 2.8 mg OTA/kg bw per day), when fed between the day 7 and day 12 of the pregnancy. Slighter embryotoxic and teratogenic effects were found when OTA was given up to day 7 or after day 12 of mice pregnancy. Severe ocular malformations, including microphthalmos, intraocular cartilage, cataract, persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous, and retinal dysplasia, occurred in a premature baby girl. The mother had ingested LSD during the first trimester of pregnancy. To our knowledge, this is the third case reported of ocular teratogenesis associated with maternal LSD ingestion. Further cases must be documented to establish an actual cause and effect relationship between the drug and the induced malformations.

An infant born with preaxial polydactyly to a mother taking azathioprine throughout pregnancy is described. Experimental studies in animals reveal a teratogenic role for azathioprine and its main metabolite, 6-mercaptopurine. The skeletal system appears to be the primary tissue target for such action of these drugs. Although no direct cause-effect relationship can be established from the single case presented, the similarity of this anomaly to experimental azathioprine teratogenesis suggests the necessity for further surveillance.
