Development and psychometric validity of the perioperative anxiety scale-7 (PAS-7).

BACKGROUND: Preoperative anxiety is a common psychological reaction in perioperative patients. The absence of a valid measurement tool hinders the evaluation of interventions to treat preoperative anxiety in China. This study aims to develop the Perioperative Anxiety Scale-7 (PAS-7) and test its reliability, validity, and cut-off value. METHODS: A total of 280 patients over 16 years old (M = 55.1, SD = 14.3) who were undergoing elective surgery were recruited to complete the PAS-7 and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 scale (GAD-7) one day before surgery. RESULTS: The PAS-7 included seven i

Relapse and rebound following discontinuation of benzodiazepine treatment of panic attacks: alprazolam versus diazepam.

The authors assessed the effects of partial tapering followed by abrupt discontinuation of alprazolam, diazepam, and placebo in 40 patients with panic attacks. The anxiety scores and frequency of panic attacks of the three groups did not differ at the end of the initial 2-week taper, but 1 week after abrupt discontinuation of the remaining medication, patients formerly taking alprazolam had greater increases in anxiety but no more panic attacks than did the other patients. Because of low statistical power, differences in benzodiazepine half-lives, absence of multiple ratings, and imbalances be

Health anxiety related to problematic smartphone use and gaming disorder severity during COVID-19: Fear of missing out as a mediator.

Health anxiety has been linked with fear and anxiety regarding COVID-19. Higher levels of health anxiety likely increased social distancing and self-isolating during the pandemic. We investigated relations among health anxiety, fear of missing out (FOMO) on rewarding social experiences from social distancing, and consequential levels of problematic smartphone use (PSU) and gaming disorder (GD). We surveyed a broad sample of 812 U.S. and Canadian participants during the pandemic, in late-May 2020, using the Short Health Anxiety Inventory, FOMO Scale, Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Version, an

Relations between empathy and anxiety dimensions in inpatient adolescents.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: A better understanding of the relationships between empathy and internalizing disorders is needed to plan therapeutic interventions for children and adolescents. Several studies have revealed positive relations of internalizing symptoms to personal distress and affective empathy. However, there is a lack of studies that take into account the multidimensional nature of anxiety in its relation to empathy. DESIGN: Structural equation modeling was used to test the moderated mediation model of the relations between empathy, depression and anxiety dimensions and the moder

Reliability, factor structure, and measurement invariance of the Dominic Interactive across European countries: Cross-country utility of a child mental health self-report.

Large-scale international surveys are important to globally evaluate, monitor, and promote children's mental health. However, use of young children's self-reports in these studies is still controversial. The Dominic Interactive, a computerized DSM-IV-based child mental health self-report questionnaire, has unique characteristics that may make it preeminently appropriate for usage in cross-country comparisons. This study aimed to determine scale score reliabilities (omega) of the Dominic Interactive in a sample of 8,135 primary school children, ages 6-11 years old, in 7 European countries, to c
