A clinical investigation into the relationship between increased periwound skin temperature and local wound infection in patients with chronic leg ulcers.

OBJECTIVE: Increased local temperature is a classic sign of wound infection, and its quantitative measurement has the potential to assist with assessment and diagnosis of chronic deep wound and surrounding skin infection at the bedside. Evidence supporting such use in chronic wound care is very limited. This clinical pilot study was conducted in an attempt to quantify the relationship between increased periwound skin temperature and wound infection, as well as validate use of a handheld infrared thermometer for the wound care practitioner. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Using a cross-sect

Holmium(iii) molecular nanomagnets for optical thermometry exploring the luminescence re-absorption effect.

Coordination complexes of lanthanide(3+) ions can combine Single-Molecule Magnetism (SMM) with thermally modulated luminescence applicable in optical thermometry. We report an innovative approach towards high performance SMM-based optical thermometers which explores tunable anisotropy and the luminescence re-absorption effect of HoIII complexes. Our concept is shown in dinuclear cyanido-bridged molecules, {[HoIII(4-pyridone)4(H2O)2][MIII(CN)6]}·nH2O (M = Co, 1; Rh, 2; Ir, 3) and their magnetically diluted analogues, {[HoIII x YIII 1-x (4-pyridone)4(H2O)2][MIII(CN)6]}·nH2O (M = Co, x = 0.11, 1@…

Human temperatures for syndromic surveillance in the emergency department: data from the autumn wave of the 2009 swine flu (H1N1) pandemic and a seasonal influenza outbreak.

BACKGROUND: The emergency department (ED) increasingly acts as a gateway to the evaluation and treatment of acute illnesses. Consequently, it has also become a key testing ground for systems that monitor and identify outbreaks of disease. Here, we describe a new technology that automatically collects body temperatures during triage. The technology was tested in an ED as an approach to monitoring diseases that cause fever, such as seasonal flu and some pandemics. METHODS: Temporal artery thermometers that log temperature measurements were placed in a Boston ED and used for initial triage vital…

Body Temperature of the Yellow-Headed Amazon Parrot (Amazona oratrix sp).

The yellow-headed Amazon parrot (Amazona oratrix sp) is an endangered species because of habitat loss and illegal trafficking. Currently, there is no data on body temperature available for this species, and this makes a complete clinical examination for determining its health status difficult. The objective of this study was to compare 2 methods for measuring body temperature (digital rectal thermometer, skin infrared thermometer) in 22 yellow-headed Amazon parrots. Over multiple measurements, the mean cloacal and skin temperatures were 41.46 ± 0.45°C (106.62 ± 0.81°F) and 40.69 ± 0.37°C (105.

Predictors of newborn hypothermia in the first 6 hours after delivery among newborns in Kilimanjaro region-Tanzania: An analytical cross-sectional study.

Maintaining a newborn body temperature after delivery is critical in achieving better newborn health outcomes. Properly controlling newborn temperature from the time of delivery can increase newborn survival. However, there is scant information on predictors associated with newborn hypothermia in the setting. A health facility-based analytical cross-sectional study was conducted from April to June 2024. The study included 325 newborns and their mothers from 4 primary health facilities, and the participants were selected using a systematic random sampling technique. The newborn axillary body te

The patient experience of ABVD treatment in Hodgkin lymphoma: a retrospective cohort study of patient-reported distress.

PURPOSE: Psychological distress is prevalent in Hodgkin lymphoma (HL). Many patients, regardless of prognosis, receive ABVD chemotherapy as first-line treatment, but few studies have specifically examined the nature of distress during this shared treatment experience. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of patient-reported distress in HL patients receiving ABVD treatment at a single tertiary care facility. Distress was measured using the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Distress Thermometer and Problem List (PL). We used descriptive statistics and generalized estimating equations

Identifying Bridge Symptoms Linking Physical and Psychological Burdens in Postoperative Pancreatic Cancer Patients: A Network Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Pain, fatigue, psychological distress, and fear of progression often co-occur in postoperative pancreatic cancer patients. The coexistence and interaction of these symptoms can further exacerbate burden. Existing research has mainly focused on single symptom or broad symptom clusters, leaving the interaction structure and key symptoms insufficiently understood. AIMS: To characterize correlations among these symptoms in postoperative pancreatic cancer patients, and to identify the central and bridge symptoms most suitable as intervention targets through network analysis. METHODS:

The Association of Serum Bicarbonate With Psychological and Physical Health-Related Quality of Life in Patients Receiving Maintenance Hemodialysis: A Secondary Analysis of the Frequent Hemodialysis Network Daily Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Serum bicarbonate (SBIC) is a surrogate for acid-base. Although higher and lower SBIC concentrations are associated with mortality in patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis (HD), the association of SBIC with patient-reported outcomes is unclear. METHODS: Using data from the Frequent Hemodialysis Network Daily Trial, we performed linear and repeated measures random effects regression to assess the association of pre-HD SBIC with general well-being (feeling thermometer score), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) score, and Physical Health Composite score. RESULTS: Among the 244

Distress in parents of children with first-onset steroid-sensitive nephrotic syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Steroid-sensitive nephrotic syndrome (SSNS) is associated with a relapsing-remitting course that can be stressful for parents. As little is known of parental distress at the first onset of SSNS, this study aims to describe parental distress and everyday problems in mothers and fathers of a child with newly diagnosed SSNS participating in a randomized controlled trial of levamisole added to corticosteroids. METHODS: To assess distress, the Distress Thermometer for Parents (DT-P) was used, which includes questions on distress (thermometer score 0-10, ≥ 4 "clinical distress") and pre

Blame-rebalance fMRI neurofeedback in major depressive disorder: A randomised proof-of-concept trial.

Previously, using fMRI, we demonstrated lower connectivity between right anterior superior temporal (ATL) and anterior subgenual cingulate (SCC) regions while patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) experience guilt. This neural signature was detected despite symptomatic remission which suggested a putative role in vulnerability. This randomised controlled double-blind parallel group clinical trial investigated whether patients with MDD are able to voluntarily modulate this neural signature. To this end, we developed a fMRI neurofeedback software (FRIEND), which measures ATL-SCC coupling

Evaluation of a thermal camera in measuring surface temperature in horses.

The use of thermal cameras in horses has proven effective for monitoring surface body temperature non-invasively, enabling the early identification of disease and inflammation. This study evaluated the agreement between a thermal camera compared to an infrared thermometer in the measurement of surface temperatures of 60 healthy horses (27 mares, 33 stallions; 7.88 ± 4.01 years; 466 ± 50.1 kg). Measurements were taken at the neck, thorax, and coronary band between 8:00-9:00 a.m., under controlled environmental conditions. Analysis revealed strong correlations between the two methods at the coro

Measuring temperature rise during orthopaedic surgical procedures.

A reliable means for measuring temperatures generated during surgical procedures is needed to recommend best practices for inserting fixation devices and minimizing the risk of osteonecrosis. Twenty four screw tests for three surgical procedures were conducted using the four thermocouples in the bone and one thermocouple in the screw. The maximum temperature rise recorded from the thermocouple in the screw (92.7±8.9°C, 158.7±20.9°C, 204.4±35.2°C) was consistently higher than the average temperature rise recorded in the bone (31.8±9.3°C, 44.9±12.4°C, 77.3±12.7°C). The same overall trend between

Prey ingestion revealed by oesophagus and stomach temperature recordings in cormorants.

We examined the accuracy of both stomach and oesophagus temperature sensors-deployed on captive Brandt's cormorants-for determination of the mass of food ingested and the number of prey items swallowed. The oesophageal temperature sensor was a better detector of all feeding events, including that of small prey which were missed by the stomach sensor. Adapted to free-ranging animals (and coupled to data loggers for recording seawater temperature), oesophagus temperature recorders, in conjunction with both recordings of energy expenditure (e.g. doubly labelled water, heart rate) and determinatio

Accuracy of the non-invasive Tcore™ temperature monitoring system to measure body core temperature in abdominal surgery.

An accurate determination of body core temperature is crucial during surgery in order to avoid and treat hypothermia, which is associated with poor outcome. In a prospective observational study, we evaluated the suitability of the Tcore™ device (Drägerwerk AG & Co. KGaA, Lübeck, Germany)-a non-invasive thermometer-to accurately determine core body temperature. In patients undergoing surgery for ovarian cancer, core body temperature (CBT) was determined with the Tcore™ sensor attached to the forehead and compared with blood temperature (Tblood) as measured within the femoro-iliacal artery. Both

Evaluation of the accuracy of different methods of monitoring body temperature in anesthetized brown bears (Ursus arctos).

There is some evidence that the handheld rectal thermometer does not accurately measure core temperature in bears. The objective of this study was to compare body temperature measured by the handheld digital thermometer (HDT), deep rectally inserted core temperature capsules (CTCs), and gastrically inserted CTCs in anesthetized brown bears (Ursus arctos). Twenty-two brown bears were immobilized with a combination of zolazepam-tiletamine and xylazine or medetomidine. After immobilization, one CTC was inserted 15 cm deep into the animal's rectum (DRTC) with a standard applicator, and another CTC
