Case-control study of lymphoid neoplasm in three French areas: description, alcohol and tobacco consumption.

A multi-centre hospital-based case-control study was conducted in three regions of France between 2000 and 2003 in order to establish the risk factors of lymphoid neoplasms. We report here results concerning alcohol and tobacco consumption. A total of 298 cases and 276 controls, case-matched by inclusion centre, age and sex were included. Cases were classified according to the World Health Organization classification and validated by an expert panel of eight pathologists. Overall alcohol intake did not incur any risk increase for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Wine consumption marginally increased th

Compliance Surveillance of the Tobacco Control Legislation in a Spanish Region and Characterization of Passive Exposure to Tobacco Smoke and E-Cig in Children in Outdoor Spaces.

(1) Background: Exposure to environmental tobacco smoke has decreased in recent years in Spain, due to the implementation of tobacco control policies. However, there is no regulation that protects against second-hand smoke (SHS) in outdoor environments. Our goal is to describe the smoking prohibition signage in public spaces and to characterize tobacco consumption in outdoor environments describing the SHS exposure in children. (2) Methods: A cross-sectional study using direct observation was carried out with a convenience sample (n = 179) that included hospitality venues with terraces, school…

Efficacy of a group tobacco cessation behavioral intervention among tobacco users with concomitant mental illness in Kenya: protocol for a controlled clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: The rate of tobacco use among people with mental illness is nearly twice that of the general population. Psychotropic medications for tobacco cessation are relatively expensive for most Kenyans. Behavioral counseling and group therapy are effective lower cost strategies to promote tobacco cessation, yet have not been studied in Kenya among individuals with concomitant mental illness. METHODS/DESIGN: One hundred tobacco users with mental illness who were part of an outpatient mental health program in Nairobi, Kenya were recruited and allocated into intervention and control groups o

Shifting the gaze on implementation: examining the association between the implementation of tobacco control laws and prevalence of tobacco using data from a nationally representative survey.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use and the associated health burden is a cause of concern in India and globally. Despite several tobacco control policies in place, their sub-optimal and variable implementation across Indian states has remained a concern. Studies evaluating the real-world implementation of policies such as Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (COTPA) or National Tobacco Control Program (NTCP) in India and its association with reductions in tobacco use are limited. In this paper, we analyse data from a nationally representative survey to examine how policy implementation is associated wit…

Tailoring dissemination of evidence to preferences of tobacco control partners: results from an academic-community partnership.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco control program leaders and their partners, who often present evidence to policymakers, can increase the use of evidence in program and policy development. However, up-to-date evidence from the scientific community about what works is slow to reach leaders. We describe efforts to understand and utilize tobacco control leaders' preferences for receiving evidence and report on resulting dissemination strategies, translational products, and outcomes. METHODS: This work is part of the Advancing Science and Practice in the Retail Environment (ASPiRE) Center, an interdisciplinar…

From silos to policy coherence: tobacco control, unhealthy commodity industries and the commercial determinants of health.

Tobacco control has achieved remarkable successes, underpinned by the distinctive norms codified in Article 5.3 of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. Tobacco control's experience in managing conflicts of interest is increasingly recognised as relevant for addressing other non-communicable disease epidemics. At the same time, the wider environmental and social harms of tobacco-and other unhealthy commodity industries-underline the potential for enhanced strategic collaboration across health, development and environmental agendas. Such collaboration is increasingly necessary to add…

Secondary spontaneous pneumothorax and bullous lung disease in cannabis and tobacco smokers: A case-control study.

BACKGROUND: The notion that smoking cannabis may damage the respiratory tract has been introduced in recent years but there is still a paucity of studies on this subject. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between cannabis smoking, pneumothorax and bullous lung disease in a population of operated patients. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We performed a retrospective study on patients operated on for spontaneous pneumothorax. Patients were divided into three groups according to their smoking habit: cannabis smokers, only-tobacco smokers and nonsmokers. Cannabis lifetime exposure w

The dose-response relationship between tobacco smoking and the risk of lymphomas: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have provided limited support to the association between tobacco smoking and lymphomas with weak evidence of a dose-response relationship. METHODS: We investigated the relationship between tobacco smoking and risk of non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHL) and Hodgkin lymphomas (HL) through logistic regression spline models. Data were derived from an Italian hospital-based case-control study (1999-2014), which enrolled 571 NHLs, 188 HLs, and 1004 cancer-free controls. Smoking habits and other lifestyle factors were assessed through a validated questionnaire. Odds ratios (OR)

Deconstructing myths, building alliances: a networking model to enhance tobacco control in hospital mental health settings.

Life expectancy for people with severe mental disorders is up to 25 years less in comparison to the general population, mainly due to diseases caused or worsened by smoking. However, smoking is usually a neglected issue in mental healthcare settings. The aim of this article is to describe a strategy to improve tobacco control in the hospital mental healthcare services of Catalonia (Spain). To bridge this gap, the Catalan Network of Smoke-free Hospitals launched a nationwide bottom-up strategy in Catalonia in 2007. The strategy relied on the creation of a working group of key professionals from…

Global control in Pseudomonas fluorescens mediating antibiotic synthesis and suppression of black root rot of tobacco.

Pseudomonas fluorescens CHA0 colonizes plant roots, produces several secondary metabolites in stationary growth phase, and suppresses a number of plant diseases, including Thielaviopsis basicola-induced black root rot of tobacco. We discovered that mutations in a P. fluorescens gene named gacA (for global antibiotic and cyanide control) pleiotropically block the production of the secondary metabolites 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol (Phl), HCN, and pyoluteorin. The gacA mutants of strain CHA0 have a drastically reduced ability to suppress black root rot under gnotobiotic conditions, supporting the

Research on the relative humidity changes of the controlled atmosphere environment for redried tobacco storage.

To study the ambient relative humidity changes during the controlled atmosphere alcoholization for redried tobacco storage. Firstly the critical factors of relative humidity of the controlled atmosphere for no tobacco and redried tobacco were researched, respectively. Then the models had been constructed and validated. The results showed that the relative humidity of the controlled atmosphere environment for no tobacco had significant correlation with nitrogen volume concentration and temperature, had insignificant correlation with oxygen volume concentration. And the relative humidity of the

Effects of indole derivatives from Purpureocillium lilacinum in controlling tobacco mosaic virus.

There are various types of compounds studied and applied for plant disease management, and some of them are environment friendly and suitable in organic production. An example is indole-3-carboxaldehyde (A1) and indole-3-carboxylic acid (A2) derived from Purpureocillium lilacinum H1463, which have shown a strong activity in the control of tobacco mosaic virus (TMV). In this study, the effects of these compounds were studied on suppressing TMV and corresponding mechanism. Both A1 and A2 exhibited strong anti-TMV activities in vitro and in vivo. They fractured TMV virions and forced the fracture
