Delayed wound healing after tooth extraction and self-reported kyphosis in Japanese men and women.

It is unclear whether osteoporosis itself is a main risk factor for delayed wound healing after tooth extraction in humans. In this study, we evaluated the association between experience of delayed wound healing after last tooth extraction and self-reported kyphosis, with the possibility of having vertebral fractures, in Japanese patients. Among the 1,504 patients who responded to the structured questionnaire survey, 518 patients (134 men and 384 women) aged 55-97 years finally participated in this study. Patients who self-reported mild-moderate kyphosis were more likely to have problematic de

Study on Spline Stress of Separator Plates in a Wet Multi-Plate Clutch.

The spline teeth fracture of separator plates in wet multi-plate clutches compromises driving safety and the vehicle's lifespan. Tooth fracture is mainly caused by stress concentration at the tooth root and uneven circumferential load distribution. This paper considers parameters such as torque, teeth count, tooth profile, and misalignment errors, establishing the corresponding finite element (FE) model to analyze the impact of the above-mentioned parameters on the strength of the separator plates. Analysis under even and biased load circumstances demonstrated that an optimum tooth count and p

Mandibular fractures following third molar extraction. A retrospective clinical and radiological study.

Twelve patients with 13 mandibular fractures following third molar extraction were treated in our Department between 1980 and 1995. Clinical and radiographic data relating to these patients were analysed retrospectively to determine complication characteristics. Only one fracture occurred during surgery. The first week after the operation was found to be most critical for fracture occurrence. A "cracking" sound from the jaw while eating frequently indicated that a fracture had occurred, but repeated radiographic examination may be necessary for definitive diagnosis. Most teeth removed belonged

Unusual presentation of 'u-shaped' impacted maxillary central incisor with intranasal root: successful surgical management.

BACKGROUND: Dilacerations is a tooth deformity characterized by an angulation between crown and root causing non-eruption of the tooth. It generally occurs following trauma to the deciduous dentition apices of which lie close to the permanent tooth buds. According to Neville, maxillary and mandibular incisors contribute only approximately to 1% of the incidence of dilacerated teeth. CASE DETAILS: A 15 year old male patient reported with chief complaint of missing anterior teeth in the left side of maxillary arch. Radiographic evaluation showed impacted maxillary left central incisor. The radi

Survival of glass fiber post retained endodontically treated teeth preliminary report.

BACKGROUND: The use of fiber reinforced composite post in restoration of endodontically treated teeth have been found to prevent irreparable root fracture and the fact that the post is bonded to the root giving a monobloc restoration, also strengthens the tooth. This preliminary study aimed to evaluate the survival of endodontically treated teeth with compromised coronal tooth structure restored with glass-fiber posts after 6 months. METHODOLOGY: Twenty endodontically treated teeth with less than 50% coronal tooth structure, were assessed and restored with glass fiber reinforced post cemented

Diagnosis and management of common maxillofacial injuries in the emergency department. Part 5: Dentoalveolar injuries.

Injuries to teeth can be very distressing for patients. Prompt treatment is essential. Injuries of the tooth bearing portion of the mandible are common and can even result after a relatively low impact trauma. The alveolus (tooth bearing portion of bone) and/or the tooth may be damaged. Segmental fractures involve multiple teeth and the supporting alveolar bone.

Crown-root fracture of fused primary teeth--a case report.

In the primary dentition, traumatic injuries affecting the tooth-supporting structures are common due to increased bone resilience in children. Crown-root fracture, defined as a fracture involving enamel, dentin, and cementum, is uncommon in the primary dentition, comprising only 2% of dental traumas. This article reports the treatment and follow-up of a 2-year-old boy who suffered a traumatic crown-root fracture involving a primary anterior incisor that was fused to a supernumerary tooth.

Delayed Treatment of Traumatized Primary Teeth with Distinct Pulp Response: Follow-Up until Permanent Successors Eruption.

Complicated crown fracture and crown-root fracture with pulp involvement expose dental pulp to the oral environment. The pulp outcome is often unpredictable because the patient and injury which are related to variables can influence the treatment of choice and the prognosis of the case. This report presents the case of a 4-year-old boy with complicated crown fracture with pulp polyp in the primary right maxillary central incisor (51) and crown-root fracture with pulp involvement in the primary left maxillary central incisor (61), which was treated only 3 months after the tooth injuries. The tr

Intraoperative femur fracture is associated with stem and instrument design in primary total hip arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Intraoperative proximal femoral fracture is a risk in total hip arthroplasty (THA) with cementless stems with reported rates of 1.5-27.8%. Certain designs or designs associated with certain types of instrumentation may have higher rates. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We compared the incidence of proximal femoral fracture with two stem and instrument design systems. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 425 patients (457 hips) undergoing primary THAs using a supine, muscle-sparing approach between February 2007 and April 2009. In 439 cases, a monoblock, broach-only, tapered wedge design stem

Restoration fractures, cusp fractures and root fragments in a diverse sample of adults: 24-month incidence.

BACKGROUND: There are few reports in the literature regarding estimates of the occurrence of tooth fractures. Most studies have assessed tooth fractures in people seeking dental care, which may underestimate the incidence of the problem. METHODS: This study sought to estimate the incidence and prevalence of cusp and restoration fractures, as well as root fragments in participants in the Florida Dental Care Study, a diverse representative sample of community-dwelling residents of four north Florida counties made up of people who seek dental care regularly and those who do not. Participants rec…

Esthetic enhancement of a traumatized anterior tooth with a combination of forced eruption and tooth alignment: a case report.

Exposing sound structure of a subgingivally fractured tooth using orthodontic extrusion is considered to be a conservative way to re-establish biologic width without sacrificing esthetics or jeopardizing periodontal support of neighboring teeth. When a misaligned tooth is traumatically involved, a more comprehensive approach combining tooth extrusion and re-alignment may be necessary for a successful restorative outcome. This case report describes a successful esthetic management of a patient with complicated crown-root fracture on the maxillary right central incisor and pre-existing malocclus

Combined orthodontic, surgical, and restorative approach to treat a complicated crown-root fracture in a maxillary central incisor.

This case report shows the treatment of a severe traumatic tooth injury. For the maxillary right central incisor, the trauma was considered a complicated crown-root fracture. The level of the fracture line, the length of the remaining root segment, and the presence and condition of the tooth fragment determined the type of therapy. Traumatized teeth with fractures below the alveolar crest are often considered hopeless. As this report shows, the treatment of a complicated crown-root fracture in the esthetic region can be challenging. Orthodontic extrusion and crown-length surgery were performed

[Treatment of dental accidents and associated alveolar fractures].

Diagnosis of dental accidents is based on patient history, clinical examination and imaging. A completely avulsed tooth should immediately be reimplanted, and a dislodged tooth urgently repositioned to the original position. Avulsed primary teeth will never be reimplanted, and primary teeth of children under three years are not repositioned. Furthermore, fractures of the alveolar process and various soft tissue injuries but not dental fractures require urgent treatment. All dental accident patients should be referred to dental consultation for further examinations and treatment.

Dental pathology of the California sea lion (Zalophus californianus).

Skulls from 1,085 California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) were examined macroscopically according to defined criteria. The museum specimens, 61.8% male and 37.3% female, were acquired from strandings and varied in age from juvenile to adult. The majority of teeth were available for examination (95.7%); 3.8% of teeth were artefactually absent, 0.4% deemed absent due to acquired tooth loss and 0.1% were congenitally absent. Acquired tooth loss was associated significantly with sex (P = 0.004) with males having more tooth loss than females and total ante-mortem tooth loss was associated sig
