BACKGROUND/AIMS: Avulsion of a permanent tooth is one of the most severe traumatic dental injuries, comprising an estimated 0.5%-16% of all dental injuries. The aim of this study was to estimate the direct financial costs of tooth avulsion in children based on stage of root maturity and the occurrence of ankylosis and to report patients' characteristics and outcomes of treatment.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of the dental records of children ages 6-18 who sustained a permanent tooth avulsion from 2010 to 2020 was completed. Relative Value Units (RVUs) were used to calculate t

BACKGROUND: Intentional replantation and dental autotransplantation are 2 similar techniques both involving atraumatic tooth extraction, visualization of the root, and replantation. They are considered as the last resort for unsalvageable teeth. The author aims to describe 2 mandibular posterior teeth with serious periapical lesions which are resolved by intentional replantation and dental autotransplantation, respectively.
CASE SUMMARY: In case 1, a 45-year-old male patient received root canal treatment because of a cracked mandible right first molar with periapical lesions. An endodontic fi

Intentional replantation is an accepted endodontic treatment procedure in which a tooth is extracted and treated outside the oral cavity and then inserted into its socket to correct an obvious radiographic or clinical endodontic failure. This article reviews nine cases of intentional replantation (IR) that show the feasibility of the procedure in a variety of indications. Only one case of replantation showed evidence of pathosis that reflected root resorption or ankylosis. This report suggests that IR is a reliable and predictable procedure and should be more often considered as a treatment mo

Management of an inverted ectopic maxillary central incisor adjacent to an alveolar cleft is challenging because spontaneous eruption into the dental arch is impossible. In a male patient with unilateral cleft lip and alveolus treated between 5 years 4 months and 12 years 5 months, the incisor was replanted with axial correction and mucosal coverage after secondary alveolar bone grafting and confirmation of bony bridging. Surgical exposure and orthodontic traction guided the tooth into the arch without infection, clinically significant root resorption, or clinical ankylosis. This case illustra

Actinomycosis is a rare lesion of the jaws and may present as periapical pathosis; therefore, it is essential to be correctly diagnosed and managed. This case presentation describes management of a tooth with a symptomatic apical periodontitis caused by Actinomyces species supplemented with medicine prescription. A woman was referred for endodontic management of tooth #19. The tooth had a history of previous nonsurgical endodontic retreatment. Clinically, the tooth was very sensitive to percussion. Radiographic evaluation showed a large periapical lesion. Intentional replantation (IR) was plan

Root resorption represents a critical complication associated with tooth replantation, directly influencing its success rate. Macrophages, as precursors of odontoclasts, are the primary effector cells that initiate root resorption; however, their cellular and molecular mechanisms of action in that microenvironment are not well understood. In this study, we found that macrophages are juxtaposed with sensory neurons and express receptor activity modifying protein-1(RAMP1,) a receptor for the neuropeptide calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP). We hypothesised that CGRP released from sensory neur

Strip perforation is a severe procedural complication during root canal therapy, often associated with poor prognosis, especially when combined with overextended gutta-percha. While surgical or nonsurgical retreatment is commonly indicated, patient-centered decision-making and long-term follow-up may influence the management strategy. This case report describes the conservative follow-up and eventual successful treatment of a mandibular second molar with an extensive midroot strip perforation and extruded gutta-percha, ultimately managed with intentional replantation and root-end filling using

BACKGROUND: The success of tooth transplantation or replantation depends on the viability of periodontal ligament in the planted tooth. Mechanical injury to periodontal tissues frequently results in dental root resorption and dental ankylosis, which leads to the failure of transplantation or replantation. Enamel matrix derivative (EMD) has been recently used to induce periodontal regeneration. In this report, we show a clinical case of EMD application in the transplantation of an inversely impacted and immature tooth.
METHODS: An impacted second premolar was found in the right maxilla of a 16

INTRODUCTION: Coconut water (CW) and soy milk (SM) have been proposed as storage media for avulsed teeth because of their nutrients that preserve cell viability. The present study investigated the periodontal healing process of dog teeth replanted after storage in CW, SM, and whole milk (WM) using micro-computed tomographic (μCT) and histologic analyses compared with immediate tooth replantation.
METHODS: Forty roots of 10 adult beagle dogs were extracted and subjected to the following protocols: immediate replantation after extraction (control), stored in CW with an adjusted pH, and SM and W

INTRODUCTION: Intentional replantation is an alternative to tooth extraction and prosthetic replacement when conventional endodontic treatment modalities are unfeasible or contraindicated. This study assessed tooth retention and healing after intentional replantation and explored predictors of these outcomes.
METHODS: Data of intentional replantation procedures performed between March 2000 and December 2010 were collected prospectively, excluding teeth with preoperative periodontal and root defects. A cohort of 159 teeth was followed up for 0.5-12 years. Retention and healed status without co

BACKGROUND: Clinical guidelines for the management of avulsed teeth recommend pulp extirpation (PE) within 10 to 14 days of replantation. The principles of evidence-based dentistry can be used to assess whether this is the best approach based on currently-available evidence. The objective of this study was to use the principles of evidence-based dentistry to answer the PICO Question: (P) For a replanted avulsed permanent tooth, (I) is early PE within 10 to 14 days of replantation, (C) compared with delayed pulp extirpation, (O) associated with an increased likelihood of successful periodontal

This article reports a clinical case of an 8-year-old boy who sustained avulsion of the maxillary right central incisor and the maxillary left lateral incisor. The avulsed teeth were kept in adverse extraoral dry conditions for 1 h from the moment of trauma until their replantation. The prognosis of tooth replantation is dependent on multiple factors such as methods of teeth storage in vitro, endodontic intervention, extra-oral time, and type of retention employed. The main reasons for root resorption in this case may be the extra-oral time, the initial replantation, or the delayed endodontic

BACKGROUND/AIM: Tooth replantation is the treatment of choice in cases of avulsion although the outcomes are variable. The teeth can be lost due to external root resorption. The aim of this study was to histologically assess of the effect of laser phototherapy (λ780 nm) on replanted teeth in rats.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixty Wistar Albinus rats had their maxillary right incisors extracted and were then divided into four groups: G1-absence of storage medium; G2-milk as storage medium; G3-milk as storage medium followed by a laser irradiation of the root surfaces and entrance of the alveolus (λ

Dental avulsion is the most severe type of traumatic tooth injuries because it causes damage to several structures and results in the complete displacement of the tooth from its socket in the alveolar bone. The ideal situation is to replant an exarticulated tooth immediately after avulsion because the extraoral time is a determinant factor for treatment success and for a good prognosis. However, it is not always possible. The success of replantation depends on a number of factors that may contribute to accelerate or minimize the occurrence of root resorption or ankylosis, among which is the ty

The succedaneous permanent teeth develop in close proximity to primary teeth. They can get accidentally luxated or avulsed during the extraction of primary teeth. The purpose of this paper was to describe a case of a 14-year-old boy with an "iatrogenic avulsion" of an immature mandibular second premolar during the extraction of a primary mandibular second molar. The case was managed successfully with replantation technique within 30 minutes of extra oral period and followed up for 5 years. The replanted tooth remained clinically asymptomatic, showed continued root development and eruption and

The results of replantation of 29 teeth are described. Maxillary incisors constituted 85% of 27 permanent teeth. The period between avulsion and replantation ranged from within an hour to 86 days, but the actual extraoral period was within 5 hours in all but one case. Nineteen of the 27 permanent teeth were functioning for 7 months to 6 years and 7 months postoperatively. Root resorption was the cause of tooth loss in five cases. The incidence of root resorption seemed to increase with the increase of the extraoral period, but it was not affected by the period between avulsion and replantation

Crown root fractures are frequently difficult to treat and have a bad prognosis. To restore the biological space, intentional replantation can be chosen when osteotomy/osteoplasty and dental traction are not viable. Intentional replantation with tooth rotation consists of extraction, 180 degrees rotation and replantation, thus restoring the biological space. After treatment of inflammatory resorption with calcium hydroxide, endodontic treatment was completed. The patient was followed up with clinical examination (mobility test, gingival sulcus depth) and radiographic analysis (to analyze root

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential usefulness of two bisphosphonates (BPs) (etidronate and zoledronate), compared with that of alendronate, which is a well-known drug for delayed replantation, in decreasing or preventing inflammatory root resorption and replacement root resorption in replanted teeth. Eighty-four Sprague Dawley rat maxillary first molars were extracted, dried for 60 min and then replanted after root treatment. The rats were divided into four groups (control, alendronate, etidronate, zoledronate) as following treatments of avulsed root before replantation. A
