PURPOSE: To study the results of modern vitrectomy in traction and combined traction-rhegmatogenous retinal detachment involving the macula in cases of ocular toxocariasis.
METHODS: This was a cohort study of patients seen in different institutions in the United States. Ten eyes of 10 patients were studied. Vitrectomy was performed in all eyes, combined with membrane removal, scleral buckle, fluid-gas exchange, silicone oil, or lensectomy in certain cases. Clinical and radiological analysis has been carried out in series of 71 dysplastic hips in children aged 7-21 months of life (mean 16 months) treated with an over head traction. At one year follow-up there were clinically 22% excellent results, radiologically 10% excellent results and 25% poor ones. At the age of 5 complete remodeling of the hip was found in 21% of cases, and poor radiological result in 29% of cases. Avascular necrosis of the femoral head was found in 25% of patients at 1 year follow-up.

The major cause of failure in retinal detachment surgery is proliferative vitreoretinopathy. The surgical treatment of proliferative vitreoretinopathy has improved dramatically over the past ten years. Still failure is too common and the need for reoperation remains high. We reviewed the results of vitreous surgery in 12 eyes of 12 patients with tractional macular detachment from Toxocara canis. We performed a vitrectomy and membrane peeling in all eyes, with additional scleral buckling in four eyes. After a minimum of six months' follow-up, ten of the 12 eyes (83%) had complete retinal reattachment. Divergent opinions about the pathophysiology and the optimal time and methods for the treatment of Legg-Calvé-Perthes (LCP) disease exist. Synovitis causing restriction of hip motions may be hazardous to the circulation to the femoral head. We studied 23 children (24 hips) in the initial phase of LCP disease. Seven to 14 days of Russell traction decreased the intraosseous pressure significantly (p less than 0.001) and increased the hip motion a mean of 33.6 degrees. As assessed by osteovenography, the venous congestion decreased in almost every hip during Russell traction.
