Exposure to traffic-related air pollution and the risk of premature rupture of membranes: a cohort analysis of the Korean CHildren's ENvironmental health Study (Ko-CHENS).

Premature rupture of membranes (PROM) is a common and consequential childbirth complication. Although several studies suggest that air pollution may elevate PROM risk, the evidence remains limited. We therefore examined the association between traffic-related air pollutants, other ambient pollutants, and PROM in a prospective mother-child cohort. We analyzed 4096 mother-child pairs enrolled in the Korean CHildren's ENvironmental health Study (Ko-CHENS) core cohort. Ambient exposures to particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3), and carbon mon

Socioeconomic Status and Route Characteristics in Relation to Children's Exposure to Air Pollution from Road Traffic While Walking to School in Auckland, New Zealand.

Pedestrian exposure to traffic-related air pollution depends on many factors; including the nature of the traffic on nearby roads and the route characteristics. In this study, we investigated the effects of differences in vehicle fleet and transport infrastructure on children's exposure to traffic-related air pollution during their morning walk to school in Auckland, New Zealand. Five pairs of routes to schools-each including a low and a high socioeconomic status (SES) school-were selected and traversed over 7-8 days for each pair while measuring particle number concentration (PNC) and GPS coo

Exposure to traffic-related air pollution during physical activity and acute changes in blood pressure, autonomic and micro-vascular function in women: a cross-over study.

BACKGROUND: Traffic-related air pollution may contribute to cardiovascular morbidity. In urban areas, exposures during physical activity are of interest owing to increased breathing rates and close proximity to vehicle emissions. METHODS: We conducted a cross-over study among 53 healthy non-smoking women in Montreal, Canada during the summer of 2013. Women were exposed to traffic pollutants for 2-hours on three separate occasions during cycling on high and low-traffic routes as well as indoors. Personal air pollution exposures (PM(2.5), ultrafine particles (UFP), black carbon, NO₂, and O₃) we

Short-term traffic-related gaseous pollutant exposure is associated with childhood bronchopneumonia hospitalization: a 10-year time-series study from Guangzhou, China.

Short-term exposure to traffic-related gaseous pollutants [nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and sulfur dioxide (SO2)] may increase childhood bronchopneumonia risk, but evidence from megacities with high pollution levels remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate the association between short-term exposure to NO2 and SO2 and pediatric bronchopneumonia hospitalization in Guangzhou. We collected all pediatric inpatient records with a primary discharge diagnosis of bronchopneumonia (International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision: J18) among children aged 0 to 14 years from a tertiary hospital i

Assessing the influence of traffic-related air pollution on risk of term low birth weight on the basis of land-use-based regression models and measures of air toxics.

Few studies have examined associations of birth outcomes with toxic air pollutants (air toxics) in traffic exhaust. This study included 8,181 term low birth weight (LBW) children and 370,922 term normal-weight children born between January 1, 1995, and December 31, 2006, to women residing within 5 miles (8 km) of an air toxics monitoring station in Los Angeles County, California. Additionally, land-use-based regression (LUR)-modeled estimates of levels of nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, and nitrogen oxides were used to assess the influence of small-area variations in traffic pollution. Association of prenatal exposure to criteria air pollutants and traffic-related air toxics with adverse birth outcomes: A population-based cohort study in California (1990-2021).

While traffic exhaust emissions remain the largest contributor of air pollution in California, levels have declined over time. Contrarily, non-tailpipe brake and tire wear and industrial emissions have persisted and remain a major health concern. Here we studied how air pollution levels have impacted adverse birth outcomes over a period of 30 years in California. Based on birth records (1990-2021) from the California Department of Public Health, we assessed associations of gestational exposure to criteria air pollutants (PM2.5, NO2, O3) and traffic and industry-related air toxics (benzene, 1,3

Traffic-Related Air Pollution and Child BMI-A Study of Prenatal Exposure to Nitrogen Oxides and Body Mass Index in Children at the Age of Four Years in Malmö, Sweden.

Traffic-related air pollution could be a danger to the health of children. Earlier studies have linked prenatal exposure to an increased risk of a range of diseases and negative health outcomes, including overweight and obesity. Presently, a knowledge gap exists in investigating the risk of overweight and obesity among children exposed to lower levels of air pollution in utero. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between prenatal traffic-related air pollution (nitrogen dioxides (NOx) and traffic density) and childhood overweight and obesity in Malmö, Sweden. A cohort, based on att

Wearing masks as a protective measure for children against traffic-related air pollution: A comparison of perceptions between school children and their caregivers in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

BACKGROUND: Traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) problems are unlikely to be solved in the short term, making it imperative to educate children on protective measures to mitigate the negative impact on their health. Children and their caregivers may hold differing views on wearing a face mask as a safeguard against air pollution. While many studies have focused on predicting children's health-protective behaviours against air pollution, few have explored the differences in perceptions between children and their caregivers. OBJECTIVES: To examine this, we conducted a study that compared the he

Traffic, air pollution, and health.

This paper discusses emerging information on exposure to air pollution from traffic and health and raises two key questions with regard to the impact of traffic on public health: 1) is there sufficient evidence to infer that traffic is causing adverse health effects, and; 2) what is the magnitude of the adverse impact of traffic on health? Topics addressed include characterization of exposure to traffic-related pollutants; the findings of epidemiological studies to date; and investigative approaches and the related challenges - including bias, model-based conclusions, and sample size issues--i

Residential proximity to major highways - United States, 2010.

Traffic-related air pollution is a main contributor to unhealthy ambient air quality, particularly in urban areas with high traffic volume. Within urban areas, traffic is a major source of local variability in air pollution levels, with the highest concentrations and risk of exposure occurring near roads. Motor vehicle emissions represent a complex mixture of criteria air pollutants, including carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and particulate matter (PM), as well as hydrocarbons that react with NOx and sunlight to form ground-level ozone. Individually, each of these pollutants is a

Traffic pollution and the incidence of cardiorespiratory outcomes in an adult cohort in London.

OBJECTIVES: The epidemiological evidence for adverse health effects of long-term exposure to air and noise pollution from traffic is not coherent. Further, the relative roles of background versus near traffic pollution concentrations in this process are unclear. We investigated relationships between modelled concentrations of air and noise pollution from traffic and incident cardiorespiratory disease in London. METHODS: Among 211 016 adults aged 40-79 years registered in 75 Greater London practices between 2005 and 2011, the first diagnosis for a range of cardiovascular and respiratory outcom
