BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to provide an evaluation of a performance improvement initiative that operationalized universal concussion screening for all pediatric trauma admissions at a Level I pediatric trauma center. Mild traumatic brain injury may be difficult to identify in injured children. We implemented a screening tool to identify the risk for concussion after traumatic injury and to improve access to cognitive evaluation and intervention in children. Prior to implementation of our screening tool, children admitted without obvious head injury or those younger than 12 year

Operative triage of abdominal trauma, whether blunt or penetrating, remains a major challenge in emergency care. Although quantitative decision-support tools, such as Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN) rule, Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma (FAST), Shock Index, Pediatric Age-Adjusted (SIPA), and Blunt Abdominal Trauma Scoring System (BATSS), are widely used, they do not fully capture the complex clinical reasoning and experiential judgment required for real-world decision-making. This limitation is particularly important because blunt and penetrating abdomin

OBJECTIVE: This study assessed the effectiveness of trauma-informed care (TIC) in diminishing Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms in adolescents.
METHOD: A systematic search was performed across PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Wanfang Database from inception to April 2026. We included Randomized Controlled Trials or quasi-experimental studies that compared TIC interventions against control conditions for PTSD symptoms in individuals aged 12-18 years. Tw

Previous parts to this series on thoracic and neck trauma discussed the anatomy and physiology of the thorax, assessment and initial nursing interventions, imaging and adjuncts to diagnosis. Part 2 describes specific chest wall and lung injuries, types of pneumothoraces and their diagnosis and management. This section, part 3 of 4, discusses other types of thoracic injuries and their management, such as trauma to the diaphragm and heart.

BACKGROUND: Hand injuries are very complex and worrying in terms of hindering activities of daily living, functionality and self-care skills. Hand injuries are caused by traumatic events, resulting in a partial or complete loss. The focus of acute treatment is surgical replantation.
AIM: In this study, nursing care and nursing experiences of a patient who was replanted as a result of hand trauma were discussed in the light of the Roy Adaptation Model.
CASE: The male patient admitted to the emergency room due to traumatic amputation was a 49-year-old farmer. He lost his hand to an agricultura

The article addresses the pathophysiological aspects connected to multiple trauma leading to organ damage. Several studies have shown that early operative stabilization of fractures is a lifesaving treatment involving less pulmonary complications, a shorter stay in hospital and lower hospital costs than operation at a late stage. The author also discusses guidelines for diagnosis and primary treatment of the fractures, and the timing and tactics of the final operative treatment. When the patient has been stabilized and injuries with higher priority (thoracic, abdominal and head injuries) have

Geriatric syndromes involving instability are associated with a higher risk of further complications in patients with trauma requiring subsequent surgery. Acute stroke symptoms require prompt recognition and initiation of reperfusion treatment. This case study describes the patient's stroke symptoms in a timeline and explores the benefit of objective assessment using screening tests and their importance in the differential diagnosis in nursing. Dysphagia is one of the stroke symptoms that can lead to aspiration pneumonia and increase the risk of mortality. This article aims to inform general n

Patients with severe brain injuries (as can result from trauma, subarachnoid hemorrhage, or brain tumor) are monitored closely by nursing staff. It's often the nurse who first recognizes clinical signs of decompensation and begins the process of determining whether the patient is a potential organ donor. When a person is declared brain dead, it's the nurse who maintains hemodynamic stability so that donor organs remain viable. It's therefore crucial for nurses to know how brain death is determined in adults and how potential organ donors are identified, and to know the major physiologic change

Diabetes insipidus is a life-threatening condition in which the kidneys excrete huge quantities of diluted urine. Diabetes insipidus as a sequela of head trauma is unusual, but not rare. When it arises in conjunction with a spinal cord injury (SCI), diabetes insipidus not only is life threatening but also raises challenges for bladder retraining. This article describes the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management of diabetes insipidus. A case study is used to demonstrate the patient course and nursing implications, with emphasis on two nursing diagnoses: fluid volume deficit and alterations in

BACKGROUND: Individuals, who help trauma victims as part of their professional responsibilities, may experience positive effects of their work, occurring in the form of Secondary Posttraumatic Growth (SPTG). Its determinants include environmental factors such as social support, and individual characteristics, particularly cognitive processing of the trauma. The purpose of this study was to determine the associations between SPTG and social support and cognitive processing of trauma, also considered as a mediator, in a group of medical personnel exposed to secondary trauma.
METHODS: The result

BACKGROUND: Members of the trauma team often find themselves in a uniquely challenging position wherein their role on the care team may necessitate developing a working relationship with alleged or confirmed perpetrators of abuse.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 9-week-old admitted to the hospital with hyponatremia and evaluation for suspected child physical abuse. Specific details of the case were a barrier to communication and interactions between the patient's mother and the trauma nurse. This report will provide a discussion of takeaway lessons to support communication with this patient population.

BACKGROUND: Blunt trauma to the face, head and neck is frequently encountered in violent assaults (Brink, 2009 [1]). There can be trauma to the cranium in high energy mechanisms, though interpersonal trauma is less likely to be associated with traumatic brain injury (TBI) (Salentijn et al., 2014 [2]).
CASE REPORT: We describe severe soft tissue facial trauma, ocular trauma, subdural and epidural hematomas as well as calvarial fractures, orbital floor and zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC) fracture following assault with a meat tenderizer. Due to the unique mechanism of trauma and the extent of

This paper presents a year-long study of our project, aiming at (1) understanding the work practices of clinical staff in trauma intensive care units (TICUs) at a trauma center, with respect to their usage of clinical data interface systems, and (2) developing and evaluating an intuitive and user-centered clinical data interface system for their TICU environments. Based on a long-term field study in an urban trauma center that involved observation-, interview-, and survey-based studies to understand our target users and their working environment, we designed and implemented MediSenseView as a

PURPOSE: To describe characteristics of eye-related emergency department (ED) visits and investigate differences in priorities assigned to patients by triage nurses and ophthalmologists.
METHODS: A prospective survey was conducted at the ED of Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center from January 1, 2021, to May 31, 2021. Clinical data from patients with acute ophthalmic conditions lasting less than 7 days were collected via a standard questionnaire and the urgency levels assigned by nurses and physicians were also recorded. Binary logistic regression was performed to identify characteristics associated w

BACKGROUND: The role of nurses in screening for posttraumatic stress disorder is crucial in trauma units.
OBJECTIVES: To create and evaluate an easy and brief tool for nurses to predict chronic posttraumatic stress disorder 1 year after a motor vehicle crash.
METHODS: We performed a 1-year follow-up multicenter study from 2007 to 2015, including 274 patients injured in a motor vehicle crash who were hospitalized in an orthopedic trauma unit. Nurses administered the DEPITAC questionnaire. Posttraumatic stress disorder was measured by the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist of symptoms du
