Sexual orientation differences in trauma exposure and posttraumatic stress symptoms among adults in treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Sexual minority individuals are at increased risk for developing mental health disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Prior research has identified that individuals with comorbid OCD and PTSD may have a more complex clinical presentation and worse treatment outcomes. Although PTSD is not the main focus of exposure with response prevention (ERP), the first-line therapy for OCD, symptoms are inadvertently targeted through overlapping mechanisms with exposure-based PTSD treatments. No prior research has compared sexual minority and heter

Childhood Trauma and Self-harm in Youths with Bipolar Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorders (BD) in youth are associated with a high risk of self-harm behaviors. Childhood trauma (CT) is a relevant environmental stressor that is related to both BD diagnosis and self-harm in adulthood. It is not yet established whether CT may impact self-harm risk in youth. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the distribution patterns of CT in youth BD with and without self-harm. METHODS: We assessed 273 participants (aged 13-25 years), 96 youths with BD according to DSM-5 criteria and 177 healthy controls (HC). History of CT was obtained using the Childh

Cocaine use disorder, mental health diagnoses, and serious mental illness characteristics in mental health treatment.

Over half of treatment-seeking individuals with a cocaine use disorder have a co-occurring mental health disorder. Mental health disorder symptoms may impact an individual's functioning so severely that they are classified as a serious mental illness (SMI). However, there is variability in defining SMI, including the duration of symptoms, functional impairment, or specific diagnoses such as schizophrenia. This study answered the following questions among a national sample of adults with cocaine use disorder who received services from mental health treatment facilities from 2013 to 2021 (N = 35

Mental health and suicidal ideation in US military veterans with histories of COVID-19 infection.

INTRODUCTION: There have been reports of increased prevalence in psychiatric conditions in non-veteran survivors of COVID-19. To date, however, no known study has examined the prevalence, risk and protective factors of psychiatric conditions among US military veterans who survived COVID-19. METHODS: Data were analysed from the 2019 to 2020 National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study, which surveyed a nationally representative, prospective cohort of 3078 US veterans. Prepandemic and 1-year peripandemic risk and protective factors associated with positive screens for peripandemic internali

Stress and mental disorders in female military personnel: comparisons between the sexes in a male dominated profession.

The proportion of women in militaries is growing; however, many studies in the area of military mental health have been conducted with majority male samples. The present study examined sex differences in trauma exposure, work stress, and mental disorders in the Canadian Community Health Survey - Canadian Forces Supplement, a representative sample of 5155 regular force personnel and 3286 reservists ages 16-54. Past-year DSM-IV mental disorders (depression, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social phobia, PTSD, and alcohol dependence), lifetime exposure to 28 traumatic events, and wo

Substance Abuse and Mental Health: Exploring the Effects on Pediatric Trauma in the COVID-19 Pandemic Era.

Background Substance abuse and mental health diagnoses among pediatric patients with trauma have been rising. The COVID-19 pandemic introduced social isolation and stressors that may have increased risky behaviors and worsened mental health in youth. Objective The overall objective was to evaluate changes in the proportion of pediatric patients with trauma with mental health and/or substance abuse comorbidities before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods A retrospective, single-center cohort study was conducted using trauma registry data (2018-2023) for patients meeting National T

[Toward an integrated understanding of traumatic grief - connecting prolonged grief, posttraumatic stress and depression symptoms].

BACKGROUND: Psychological grief symptoms following bereavement have been extensively researched and described, with the distinction, generally speaking, of three sets of disorders: prolonged grief disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder and depression. AIM: To investigate the connection and co-occurrence between the symptoms of these three disorders. METHOD: Conducting and combining studies from a categorical, dimensional, person-centered and network perspective on psychopathology. RESULTS: We found a prevalence of 49% of prolonged grief disorder among traumatically bereaved individuals. Of

Cancer as a stressful life event: Perceptions of children with cancer and their peers.

BACKGROUND: The medical traumatic stress model is commonly applied to childhood cancer, assuming that the diagnosis of cancer is a traumatic event. However, to the authors' knowledge, little is known regarding what specifically children perceive as stressful about cancer or how it compares with other stressful events more often experienced by children. METHODS: Children with cancer (254 children) and demographically similar peers without a history of serious illness (202 children) identified their most stressful life event as part of a diagnostic interview assessing for symptoms of posttrauma

Longitudinal PTSD trajectories before and after the October 7, 2023, terror attacks: A nationwide study of Israeli adults.

BACKGROUND: Existing research on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) development over time covers brief periods predominantly among military personnel, rather than civilians, and baseline measurements from before traumatic experiences are rarely available. This longitudinal study examined PTSD trajectories among Israeli civilians before and after the October 7, 2023, terror attack, exploring their associations with current and previous trauma. METHODS: Data included 1,231 Israeli Jewish adults from a quasi-representative sample surveyed at four time points: January 2018, April 2022, Decembe

CO2 reactivity as a biomarker of exposure-based therapy non-response: study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Exposure-based therapy is an effective first-line treatment for anxiety-, obsessive-compulsive, and trauma- and stressor-related disorders; however, many patients do not improve, resulting in prolonged suffering and poorly used resources. Basic research on fear extinction may inform the development of a biomarker for the selection of exposure-based therapy. Growing evidence links orexin system activity to deficits in fear extinction and we have demonstrated that reactivity to an inhaled carbon dioxide (CO2) challenge-a safe, affordable, and easy-to-implement procedure-can serve as

Characterization of the gut microbiota among Veterans with unique military-related exposures and high prevalence of chronic health conditions: A United States-Veteran Microbiome Project (US-VMP) study.

The gut microbiome is impacted by environmental exposures and has been implicated in many physical and mental health conditions, including anxiety disorders, affective disorders, and trauma- and stressor-related disorders such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). United States (US) military Veterans are a unique population in that their military-related exposures can have consequences for both physical and mental health, but the gut microbiome of this population has been understudied. In this publication, we describe exposures, health conditions, and medication use of Veterans in the US Ve

Migrants' mental health recovery in Italian reception facilities.

BACKGROUND: Forced migration leaves deep marks on the psychological well-being of migrants, with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other psychological conditions being prevalent among them. While research has clarified the extent to which pre-migration trauma is a predictor of mental health outcomes, the role of post-migration stressors in the settlement environment are yet to be fully characterized. METHODS: We monitored mental health of a cohort of 100 asylum-seekers during their 14-day COVID-19-related quarantine in reception facilities in Rome, Italy, through the administration of

Childhood trauma and perceived parental dysfunction in the etiology of dissociative symptoms in psychiatric inpatients.

OBJECTIVE: Research on the etiology of dissociation in adults has focused primarily on childhood sexual abuse. The role of co-occurring childhood stressors and of more chronic adverse conditions such as neglect is less clear. This study examined the level of dissociation in relation to childhood trauma (sexual/physical abuse, witnessing interparental violence), early separation from a parent, and perceived parental dysfunction. METHOD: One hundred sixty inpatients consecutively admitted to a general psychiatric hospital were administered the Dissociative Experiences Scale and the Structured T

Adding to the burden: the tendency to resonate with others' stress is linked to higher PTSD symptom severity in individuals with war-related trauma.

Many refugees experience multiple traumatic events, which set them at increased risk to develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). To refine interventions aimed at improving refugees' mental health, a better understanding of the factors modulating vulnerability to war-related trauma is needed. In the present study, we focused on stress resonance as a potential vulnerability factor. Stress resonance reflects the empathic sharing of others' subjective and physiological stress experience. Sixty-seven participants who came from Arabic-speaking countries and had entered Germany as refugees or m

Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms and Posttraumatic Cognitions in the Wake of the Death of Michael Brown.

On August 9, 2014, Michael Brown was shot and killed by police officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson Missouri, sparking protests and civil unrest. Three studies have yielded inconsistent findings regarding the presence of posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSSs) in the aftermath of the unrest in Ferguson. Additional work is needed to understand how exposure to community-level stressors may correspond with trauma-related outcomes, as well as accounting for knowledge of, and engagement in the events. Posttraumatic cognitions have also not been researched. The present study examined the associations bet

Perceived social support in the social distancing era: the association between circles of potential support and COVID-19 reactive psychopathology.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Stressors related to the COVID-19 pandemic are risk factors for psychopathology, but psychosocial protective factors might play a crucial role in buffering the pathogenic effects of the outbreak. DESIGN: In the current study, we examined the association of inner resources and potential external sources of support for coping with the pandemic and related lockdowns to mental health during the pandemic, while controlling for sociodemographic variables as covariates. METHODS: We tested the model in a probability-based internet survey of a representative sample of the I

Deconstructing PTSD: Trauma and emotion among Mexican immigrant women.

The symptomatology for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) narrowly focuses on particular diagnostic frames and a single triggering event. Such narrow definitions of trauma and recovery have been heavily critiqued by anthropologists and cultural psychiatrists for overlooking cultural complexity as well as the effects of multiple and overlapping events that may cause someone to become "traumatized" and thereby affect recovery. This article investigates how subjective reporting of traumatic experience in life history narratives relates to depressive and PTSD symptomatology, cultural idioms, an
