Angioinvasive dermatophytosis with necrotizing fasciitis can be a rare complication in immunocompromised patients with early surgical debridement, 12 weeks of oral terbinafine, and reduction in immunosuppression being a viable management strategy.

Trichophyton rubrum is a common human dermatophyte that is the causative agent of 80-93% of fungal infections of the skin and nails. While dermatophyte infections in healthy people are easily treatable with over-the-counter medications, such infections pose a higher risk for patients with compromised immune function and impaired regenerative potential. The efficacy of boric acid (BA) for the treatment of vaginal yeast infections prompted an investigation of the effect of BA on growth and morphology of T. rubrum. This is of particular interest since BA facilitates wound healing, raising the pos…

Majocchi granuloma is an uncommon deep follicular inflammation caused by dermatophytes and affects immunocompetent and immunocompromised patients. The clinical findings overlap with other skin conditions such bacterial infections and inflammatory skin diseases, thereby delaying correct diagnosis. We describe 2 cases in immunocompetent patients.

This report details 2 outbreaks of dermatophytosis in 2 different mink ranches. On the first farm, only kits were affected, while on the sec … of intrafollicular fungal arthrospores and hyphae. The dermatophyte was cultured and identified as Trichophyton equinum based on molecular barcoding of the internal transcribed spacer region of the ribosomal DNA gene.

Onychomadesis, or nail shedding, is rarely seen in children and can be due to stress, systemic illnesses, trauma, and drug therapy or may be idiopathic. Fungal infection of the nail is only rarely reported as a cause of onychomadesis. We present here a case of Trichophyton tonsurans-induced onychomycosis and resultant onychomadesis in a 9-month-old boy with onset of lesions at 2 weeks of life.

UNLABELLED: We report on a 5-year-old girl with a severe kerion celsi, caused by Trichophyton mentagrophytes, probably acquired from a pet guinea pig. The lesions had started as small irritating squamous lesions that had been accurately diagnosed as skin infection, but had only been treated with local antifungal agents. The lesions progressed and developed into a kerion celsi that had to be treated with long-term systemic griseofulvin. Nevertheless, reinfection occurred and treatment had to be restarted. The girl is left with areas of alopecia, as a result of which she is required to wear a wi…

Nail cuttings obtained from patients with onychomycosis caused by Trichophyton rubrum underwent fsec laser irradiation using increasing laser intensities with the focus scanned throughout the whole thickness of the nail specimen. Two patients presenting with subcutaneous nodules, plaques, papules and ulceration caused by Trichophyton rubrum are described in this report. The first case was a 46-year-old woman referred with erythema and desquamation over her trunk, hands and feet for 30 years, progressing to nodules and ulceration over her trunk, arms and scalp for the last 2 years. The second case was a 34-year-old man who presented with a 2-year-history of itchy, erythema and desquamation over the trunk, progressing to papules, nodules and cyst around his ear, on the neck and scalp for 1 year. The diagnoses were suspec…

BACKGROUND: The spectrum of organisms causing dermatophytoses is changing continuously.
PATIENTS/METHODS: Two strains of Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. nodulare are characterized mycologically; both were isolated for the first time in our laboratory within the past 2 years from patients with tinea pedis.
RESULTS: Distinctive features of Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. nodulare are a bright yellow-orange pigmentation of the thallus, a marked exudation of pigment, and the development of nodular bodies. Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. nodulare is an anthropophilic variety of Trichophyton me…

Dermatophyte infections due to Trichopkyton verrucosum are not frequent in Europe. Six cases observed in Italy in the period 1995-99 are reported. Two were cases of tinea barbae, two of tinea corporis and two of tinea capitis, one of which had been preceded by tinea faciei. In three cases the source of contagion was horses, in two it was cattle and in one case it was another person. The two cases of tinea barbae were initially interpreted and treated as bacterial infections, a diagnostic error reported with increasing frequency in the literature regarding dermatophytosis due to T. verrucosum.

Koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus) are arboreal marsupials native to Australia that eat a specialized diet of almost exclusively eucalyptus leaves. Microbes in koala intestines are known to break down otherwise toxic compounds, such as tannins, in eucalyptus leaves. Infections by Chlamydia, obligate intracellular bacterial pathogens, are highly prevalent in koala populations. If animals with Chlamydia infections are received by wildlife hospitals, a range of antibiotics can be used to treat them. However, previous studies suggested that koalas can suffer adverse side effects during antibiotic tre

A 55-year-old renal transplant recipient with onychomycosis and chronic tinea pedis presented with tender nodules on his left medial heel. He then developed papules and nodules on his right foot and calf. A skin biopsy demonstrated periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) positive, thick walled round cells, 2 to 6 microm in diameter, in the dermis. Skin biopsy culture grew Trichophyton rubrum. T. rubrum has been described as an invasive pathogen in immunocompromised hosts. The clinical presentation, histopathology, and early fungal culture growth suggested Blastomyces dermititidis in the differential diagno…

Over a 2-year period, we saw 37 patients with a diagnosis of dermatophytid on the hands based on 1) culture-proven dermatophytosis on one or both feet; 2) symmetrical, secondary vesicular eruptions on the fingers and/or palmar aspects of the hands; and 3) a resolution in both areas of involvement after treatment of the dermatophytosis on the foot. During the study period, 128 patients had culture-proven dermatophytosis of the feet caused by Trichophyton rubrum. Nine of these (7%) developed dermatophytid. Seventy-eight patients had dermatophytosis of the feet caused by Trichophyton mentagrophyt…

Several prolonged and significant outbreaks of dermatophytosis caused by Trichophyton indotineae, a new emerging terbinafine-resistant species, have been ongoing in India in recent years, and have since spread to various countries outside Asia. Miltefosine, an alkylphosphocholine, is the most recently approved drug for the treatment of both visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis. Miltefosine in vitro activity against terbinafine-resistant and susceptible T. mentagrophytes/T. interdigitale species complex, including T. indotineae, is limited. The current study aimed to assess miltefosine's in vit…
