CuO Promotes the Formation of Halogenated Disinfection Byproducts during Chlorination via an Enhanced Oxidation Pathway.

Previous studies showed that cupric oxide (CuO) can enhance the formation of trihalomethanes (THMs), haloacetic acids, and bromate during chlorination of bromide-containing waters. In this study, the impact of CuO on the formation kinetics and mechanisms of halogenated disinfection byproducts (DBPs) during chlorination was investigated. CuO does not enhance the formation of DBPs (i.e., 1,1,1-trichloropropanone, chloroform, and trichloroacetaldehyde (TCAL) /dichloroacetonitrile) during chlorination of acetone, 3-oxopentanedioic acid (3-OPA), and aspartic acid, respectively. This indicates that …

Determination of chloroform concentration and human exposure assessment in the swimming pool.

This cross-sectional study aimed to examine the concentration of the by-products of chlorination in the swimming pool and estimate human health risk for the swimmers of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences. In this study, the chloroform concentrations of 16 samples were measured using Gas Chromatography (GC). All the measured concentrations were less than the allowed amount announced by the World Health Organization (WHO). The results of the cancer risk (CR) and hazard index (HI) showed that the major exposure routes were found to be dermal during swimming and the 95 percentile of estimated C

Genotoxicity of drinking waters.

Drinking waters in many countries have been shown to contain non-volatile polar mutagenic compounds as well as trihalomethanes. Their nature is uncertain, but one compound, a chlorinated furanone (3-chloro-4-(dichloro-methyl)-5-hydroxy-2(5H)-furanone;MX) seems to be responsible for one third to over one half of the mutagenicity. Its concentration seems to correlate rather well also with the total bacterial mutagenicity. Animal toxicity studies are being used to evaluate the possible carcinogenicity risk of this compound as a first stage in complete risk assessment of the whole complex mixture.…

Disinfection by-product formation from the chlorination and chloramination of amines.

This study investigated the relative effect of chlorination and chloramination on DBP formation from seven model amine precursor compounds, … 7. These results indicate that, while chloramination is effective at reducing the concentrations of trihalomethanes and haloacetonitriles in drinking water compared with chlorination, the opposite is true for the halonitromethanes.

How the inclusion of treated water in beverages influences the appearance of halogenated volatile organic compounds.

A simple, robust, and reliable headspace gas chromatography method has been developed for the determination of 14 halogenated volatile organic compounds, including iodinated trihalomethanes (THMs), at nanogram per liter levels in beverages. The main source of the presence of THMs in reconstituted fruit juices, nectars, and soft drinks is the treated water included as an ingredient; the concentration and speciation depend on the volume and disinfection process of the treated water either from the distribution network or from water directly disinfected by the food factory. Chloroform appears at …

Potential health effects of chlorine dioxide as a disinfectant in potable water supplies.

Chlorination of potable water supplies high in organics may yield carcinogenic compounds such as trihalomethanes. Chlorine dioxide has been proposed as an alternative disinfectant to chlorine. However, chlorine dioxide is a strong oxidant that forms significant amounts of chlorite when added to potable water supplies, and chlorite is similar to nitrite in its molecular structure and may be similar in its mechanism of methemoglobin production. Nitrites and chlorites are thought to act synergistically to produce MetHb. Neonates and persons with G-*-PD deficiency are likely to be unusually suscep…

Management of Disinfection Byproducts in Drinking Water: A Roadmap for Change.

Many countries have developed regulations to limit disinfection byproduct (DBP) concentrations, principally trihalomethanes, in drinking water with the expectation that these DBPs would serve as surrogates for the risks from unregulated and unknown DBPs. However, epidemiological studies in combination with toxicological data now provide substantive evidence that chlorinated drinking water leads to an increased risk of bladder cancer, which is not adequately reflected in many existing DBP standards and guidelines, particularly for individuals having common genetic polymorphisms. New approaches …

Formation characteristics and acute toxicity assessment of THMs and HAcAms from DOM and its different fractions in source water during chlorination and chloramination.

The formation characteristics of trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetamides (HAcAms) from dissolved organic matter and its fractions were investigated during chlorine-based disinfection processes. The relationships between water quality parameters, fluorescence parameters, and the formation levels of THMs and HAcAms were analyzed. The fractions contributing most to the acute toxicity were identified. The trichloromethane (TCM) generation level (72 h) generally followed the order of Cl2 > NH2Cl > NHCl2 process. The NHCl2 process was superior to the NH2Cl process in controlling TCM formation. Hyd…

Dissolved organic matter composition drives the marine production of brominated very short-lived substances.

Brominated very short-lived substances (BrVSLS), such as bromoform, are important trace gases for stratospheric ozone chemistry. These naturally derived trace gases are formed via bromoperoxidase-mediated halogenation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in seawater. Information on DOM type in relation to the observed BrVSLS concentrations in seawater, however, is scarce. We examined the sensitivity of BrVSLS production in relation to the presence of specific DOM moieties. A total of 28 model DOM compounds in artificial seawater were treated with vanadium bromoperoxidase (V-BrPO). Our results sho

Ames and random amplified polymorphic DNA tests for the validation of the mutagenic and/or genotoxic potential of the drinking water disinfection by-products chloroform and bromoform.

Chloroform and Bromoform are two abundant trihalomethanes found in Algerian drinking water. The investigation of the mutagenic hazard of these disinfection by-products was studied by Ames test as prokaryotic bioassay to show their mutagenic effects. For this, Salmonella typhimurium TA98 and TA100 strains were employed. Both chloroform and bromoform showed a direct mutagenic effect since the number of revertant colonies gradually increase in dose-dependent manner with all concentrations tested with the two bacterial strains and these were both in the absence and presence of S9 metabolic activat…

The goitre-soil-water-diet relationship: case study in Plateau State, Nigeria.

The effect of drinking water, soil mineral composition and nutrition on the incidence of goitre in Plateau State, Nigeria, was studied. The study shows that the water used for drinking and cooking in the goitrous areas is low in iodine content and trihalomethanes, but high in mineral content, including calcium, magnesium, nitrate, chloride and total hardness. The water is also high in organic, inorganic and bacterial pollution content. Soil pH in the goitrous area is acidic and mineral composition follows the same pattern indicated from water analysis. Soil iodine content is very low. Diet in …

In vitro mutagenicity of water contaminants in complex mixtures.

Trihalomethanes, Carbon tetrachloride and trichloroethylene were tested in single, binary and multi-complex mixtures using standard tester strains TA1535, TA1537, TA98 and TA100 of Salmonella typhimurium with and without addition of an in vitro metabolizing fraction S-9. Chloroform (CHCl3) was found to be mutagenic in all strains without S-9 activation. However, when tested with Bromoform (15%), which was nonmutagenic singly, the combined effect of the mixture was nonmutagenic. CCl4 was a direct mutagen (without S-9) in all strains except TA 1535. When combined with 85% CHCl3, only strains TA1…

THMs, HAAs and NAs production from culturable microorganisms in pipeline network by ozonation, chlorination, chloramination and joint disinfection strategies.

Disinfection is an indispensable process to inactivate pathogens, while unexpected disinfection by-products (DBPs) would also be formed between the reaction of residual disinfectants and microorganisms in the water distribution system (WDS). However, there are few studies referring to the formation of DBPs and DBPs-associated toxicity under various disinfection methods based on microorganisms in the real WDS. In addition, the main contributors of bacterial communities or components that generate DBPs are unclear. In this study, the formation of trihalomethanes (THMs), halo-acetic acids (HAAs),…

Health risk of swimming pool disinfection by-products: a regulatory perspective.

While disinfection of swimming pools is indispensable for microbiological safety, it may lead to the formation of disinfection by-products. Most studies agree that inhalation exposure is the predominant pathway of the associated health risks, but assumptions are based on concentrations measured in water and evaporation models. Pool water and air were sampled in 19 swimming pools. Trihalomethanes were detected in all sites; chloroform being the most abundant species. Concentrations ranged between 12.8-71.2 μg/L and 11.1-102.2 μg/m3 in pool water and air, respectively. The individual lifetime ca…
