BACKGROUND: Hepatic hilar tuberculosis lymphadenitis is a rare condition that often mimics other diseases, leading to diagnostic challenges due to its nonspecific clinical presentation. It can be easily mistaken for a malignant tumor, complicating the diagnostic process.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 34-year-old woman was incidentally found to have a space-occupying lesion in the porta hepatis during a routine physical examination. Imaging revealed an irregular mass located posterior to the portal vein and in the head of the pancreas. Endoscopic ultrasonography-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA)

Weil's syndrome, a severe form of the disease, may present with symptoms such as jaundice, renal dysfunction, and hemorrhagic diathesis and it can progress to multi-organ failure leading to death. In patients with coinfection of tuberculosis with leptospirosis, there may be severe hepatic and renal dysfunction rendering the standard antitubercular therapy (ATT) regimen useless, thus requiring alternate drug selection and dose modification of antitubercular drugs. We present a case of a 57-year-old female who presented with high-grade fever and yellowish discoloration of the eyes. She was diagn

BACKGROUND: Intravenous methylprednisolone (IVMP) is a first-line treatment for active moderate-severe or sight-threatening thyroid eye disease (TED), but the presence of systemic infections such as latent tuberculosis (TB) or chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) act as relative contraindications due to the risk of reactivation. There is limited data to guide clinicians in this high-risk group.
METHODS: A retrospective case series was conducted involving five TED patients with relative contraindications to immunosuppression. Each patient included had a EUGOGO severity of moderate-to-severe. Multid

Eosinophilic gastroenteritis (EGE) is considered distinct from eosinophilic colitis (EC). A 59-year-old man presented with a colonic tumor, who had resolution of pain and diarrhea after surgery, then 7 months later developed proton-pump inhibitor-responsive dysphagia with esophagitis, and 9 months later presented again with pain and diarrhea where EGE with concurrent eosinophilic esophagitis was diagnosed. Review of the resected tumor specimen identified EC with an adenoma. Workup revealed tuberculosis and latent hepatitis B virus requiring treatment before commencing immunosuppressive therapy

BACKGROUND: Homelessness is a global issue and HIV, hepatitis C and tuberculosis are known to be prevalent in this group. Homeless populations face significant barriers to care. We aim to summarise evidence of treatment initiation and completion for homeless populations with these infections, and their associated factors, through a systematic review and meta-analysis.
METHODS: We will search MEDLINE, Embase and CINAHL for all study types and conference abstracts looking at either (1) treatment initiation in a cohort experiencing homelessness with at least one of HIV, hepatitis C, active tuber

BACKGROUND: Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) requires lengthy use of second-line drugs, burdened by many side effects. Hepatitis C virus (HCV) chronic infection increases risk of drug-induced liver injury (DILI) in these patients. Data on MDR-TB patients with concurrent HCV chronic infection treated at the same time with second-line antitubercular drugs and new direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) are lacking. We evaluate if treating at the same time HCV infection and pulmonary MDR-TB is feasible and effective.

We retrospectively studied MBP genotypes in patients with malaria, tuberculosis (TB), and persistent hepatitis B virus (HBV) carriage, in clinics and hospitals in The Gambia. Children under 10 years with cerebral malaria and/or severe malarial anaemia, were compared with children with symptomatic, mild malaria, and controls of the same age and ethnicity. Adult TB cases with smear-positive pulmonary TB were compared with healthy blood donors from the same ethnic groups. Malaria cases and controls were tested for hepatitis B core antibody (anti-HBc) and surface antigen (HBsAg). TB patients were

Primary hepatic tuberculosis (TB) is an uncommon and diagnostically challenging condition, particularly in the absence of miliary or pulmonary disease. It can closely mimic hepatobiliary malignancies both clinically and radiologically, often leading to misdiagnosis and unnecessary surgical interventions. We report a case of a 45-year-old man who presented with right upper quadrant abdominal pain, fever, and jaundice. His medical history included open cholecystectomy with resection and anastomosis of the transverse colon, and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography for a choledochocolic

Tuberculosis is a disease of poverty, discrimination, and socioeconomic burden. Epidemiological studies suggest that the mortality and incidence of tuberculosis are unacceptably higher worldwide. Genomic mutations in embCAB, embR, katG, inhA, ahpC, rpoB, pncA, rrs, rpsL, gyrA, gyrB, and ethR contribute to drug resistance reducing the susceptibility of Mycobacterium tuberculosis to many antibiotics. Additionally, treating tuberculosis with antibiotics also poses a serious risk of hepatotoxicity in the patient's body. Emerging data on drug-induced liver injury showed that anti-tuberculosis drugs

Results are presented of the incidence of hepatitis, nearly always with jaundice, among 1686 patients in clinical trials of the treatment of spinal tuberculosis, of tuberculosis meningitis and of pulmonary tuberculosis with short-course regimens containing rifampicin, isoniazid, streptomycin and pyrazinamide. The incidence was high in patients treated with daily regimens of isoniazid and rifampicin: 16-39% in children with tuberculous meningitis, 10% in patients with spinal tuberculosis (non-surgical cases), and 2-8% in those with pulmonary tuberculosis. Hepatitis, in those receiving rifampici

Tuberculosis (TB), especially extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB), is an important cause of fever of unknown origin (FUO) in areas endemic to TB. Liver involvement in TB in the absence of miliary TB is rare. A definitive diagnosis of primary hepatic TB can be challenging and relies on the histological and/or bacteriological findings of the liver tissue obtained by biopsy. TB should be considered in the differential diagnosis of space-occupying lesions and abscesses of the liver. In our case of a 52-year-old adult male with FUO, a positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) scan wa

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a globally prevalent pathogen that poses significant public health challenges. Active HBV replication can trigger immune responses that result in liver damage. Tuberculosis (TB), caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), remains one of the leading causes of death from a single infectious agent worldwide. Notably, in TB patients with HBV infection and, the incidence of adverse events is six times higher than in those with TB alone, and HBV infection increases the risk of latent TB. However, the relationship between HBV and TB have not been thoroughly inv
