Tuberous sclerosis is often associated with developmental and behavioural disorders including typical or partial autistic syndrome. However, it may be difficult to recognize tuberous sclerosis behind an infantile autism during the early stages of the disease. We report a 29-year-old woman who had prominent cutaneous markers of tuberous sclerosis, with subependymal nodules and renal cysts on computerized tomographic scan, who also showed multiple angiokeratomas widely distributed on the buttocks and posterior thighs. Enzymatic studies ruled out Fabry's disease and other lysosomal storage disorders. This is the first reported association of widespread angiokeratomas and tuberous sclerosis.

Intracranial tumors are rare in the neonatal period, and generally the most common histological types are astrocytoma, medulloblastoma, choroid plexus papilloma and neuroectodermal tumors. A patient with angiomyelolipoma of the liver, together with radiological evidence of pancreatic, renal and bony lesions characteristic of tuberous sclerosis, is described. Although the patient had no other clinical features of tuberous sclerosis, her daughter was found to suffer from the classical triad of this syndrome and also has had hepatic lipomatous lesions and bony involvement. This is the first histologically proven case of hepatic angiomyelolipoma associated with tuberous sclerosis.

Shed deciduous teeth from patients with tuberous sclerosis, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, phenylketonuria and healthy persons were examined with a surface microscope. We describe the case of a 28 years old caucasian woman with tuberous sclerosis diagnosed at 23 when she underwent nephrectomy for a left renal angiomyolipoma with massive hematuria. She had adenoma but she presented on mental deficit and there was no record of seizures. Familiar history was negative except for the presence of adenoma sebaceum in her father, aged 63, and in her only daughter, aged 10. Five years after nephrectomy she was admitted to our hospital because of exertional dyspnoea and haemoptysis. Pulmonary involvement was confirmed by chest X-rays and CT scans.

The study of cerebral lesions of TSC by special histologic methods suggests that two populations of neurons and glia occur in TSC brains. One is a population of normally differentiated cells that form a normally constituted cortical plate. Echocardiography was performed in 60 people with tuberous sclerosis (TSC) to ascertain the prevalence of cardiac rhabdomyomas at different ages. Twenty-five of 43 children, but only 3 of 17 adults, had tumors, the difference being highly significant. TSC in the kidney is expressed principally as renal cysts and angiomyolipomas. Both abnormalities may occur separately or together, and both … al abnormalities result from cell hyperplasia and hypertrophy, much like the other abnormalities of tuberous sclerosis, such as cerebral tubers and cardiac rhabdomyomas. The renal abnormalities can therefore be regarded as an expression of the TSC gene, and their recognition as such carries importance for treatment and counseling.

Microhamartomatous rectal polyps are described in 11 out of 15 patients with tuberous sclerosis (TS). These readily identifiable polyps are of no clinical significance but their prevalence and unique nature rank them as of equal importance to other better known markers of TS such as the facial angiofibromata (adenoma sebaceum).

A series of 9 patients having a tuberous sclerosis associated to a midline ventricular tumour is reported. Microscopically, the presence of giant cells within the lesion is a major characteristic of the disease.
