[Experimental studies on gastric ulcer (5). Endoscopical evaluation of healing processes of acetic acid ulcer in rats (1). Ulcer reducing process].

The following results were obtained as the result of the sequential observations with an endoscope of the gastric ulcer produced by submucosal injection of acetic acid in rats. 1) The size of the ulcer produced by acetic acid injection observed on the 3rd day after ulcer induction depended on the concentration and volume of acetic acid. 2) The natural reducing rates of the size of ulcers in the region between the fundus and pylorus on the anterior wall (A) and in the glandular region on the greater curvature (B) were compared. The reducing rate of B ulcer was significantly faster than that of

[Ulcer surgery and anti-ulcer agents. Changes in surgical activities and sale of anti-ulcer agents in Nord-Trøndelag 1975-89].

During recent decades the number of operations for peptic ulcer has decreased significantly. The incidence of operations for peptic ulcer or related complications during the period 1975-89 in persons older than 15 years was investigated in the Nord-Trøndelag region of Norway, with a population of approximately 100,000. The number of elective surgical procedures decreased by 72% from 1975 to 1989. The greatest reduction was found for duodenal ulcers. The incidence of acute operations decreased by 35%. The main reason was fewer surgical interventions in patients with haemorrhage, since the numbe

Improving venous ulcer outcomes.

Venous leg ulcers (VLUs) are caused by compromised flow of venous and lymphatic fluids from the lower leg toward the central circulatory system. They are one of the most common types of chronic wounds, affecting 3% to 5% of those 65 years of age and older.¹ Most VLUs heal within 12 weeks with sustained lower leg compression sufficient to reduce the edema associated with venous insufficiency.² Diagnosing and improving a patient's venous insufficiency and addressing concomitant arterial disease are key elements of VLU management.³ Surgical correction has been effective for superficial venous ins

Recalcitrant Fungal Corneal Ulcer.

The cornea forms the major refracting surface of the eye. Any disease affecting the cornea leads to severe visual impairment. One of the most common pathologies affecting the cornea is infective keratitis. In India, especially in rural areas, infective corneal ulcers are major causes of visual impairment. Medical therapy with antimicrobial medicines is usually started first and if fails to heal the ulcer or there is progressive corneal thinning or corneal perforation then surgical treatments like penetrating keratoplasty are the only modality to salvage the globe integrity. Fungal keratitis pa

The diabetic foot ulcer.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic foot ulcers are associated with significant morbidity and mortality and can subsequently lead to hospitalisation and lower limb amputation if not recognised and treated in a timely manner. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article is to review the current evidence for preventing and managing diabetic foot ulcers, with the aim to increase clinicians' confidence in assessing and treating these complex medical presentations. DISCUSSION: All patients with diabetes should have an annual foot review by a general practitioner or podiatrist. A three-monthly foot review is recommended f

Peptic Ulcer and Exercise.

Relationships between peptic ulcer and physical activity have as yet received little attention. The prevalence of ulceration is high in racehorses and sled dogs, particularly during periods of competition. In humans, some occupational comparisons show an increased risk among manual workers, but it remains difficult to separate effects of work-related activity from social class and attendant influences of smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, shift work, and other stressors. Two studies of leisure activity point to some benefit from moderate physical activity, one finding a reduced risk of ga

Cushing's ulcer: Further reflections.

BACKGROUND: Brain tumors, traumatic head injury, and other intracranial processes including infections, can cause increased intracranial pressure and lead to overstimulation of the vagus nerve. As a result, increased secretion of gastric acid may occur which leads to gastro-duodenal ulcer formation known as Cushing's ulcer. METHODS: A review of original records of Dr. Harvey Cushing's patients suffering from gastro-duodenal ulcers was performed followed by a discussion of the available literature. We also reviewed the clinical records of the patients never reported by Cushing to gain his pers

Pathogenesis of venous ulcer.

The underlying pathophysiology of venous ulceration is venous hypertension, which initiates a complex cascade of cellular humeral events that are then magnified by genetic factors. Hemodynamic abnormalities are features of primary and secondary chronic venous diseases that lead to disease progression. Through a sequence of events, some patients develop venous leg ulcers, if the process is not interrupted. The exact science of the pathophysiology of the progression of chronic venous disease to venous leg ulcers is still in its infancy, but the framework for future study has been established.

Kayexalate-induced colonic ulcer.

A 61-year-old male presents to the emergency room with complaints of fatigue, dizziness and bright red blood per rectum (BRBPR) for 2 days. Past medical history was significant for gastroesophageal reflux disease, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) induced ulcer, and end-stage renal disease (GFR < 30) status post 2 failed renal grafts. Pertinent medications include pantoprazole and sodium polystyrene sulfonate in sorbitol (Kayexalate 30 g/d orally). On esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) there was a single shallow, flat, non-bleeding gastric ulcer (3 mm) in the pre-pyloric region of the

Ulcer dressings and management.

BACKGROUND: Chronic leg ulcers caused by venous disease, arterial disease or a combination of both need to be clearly identified before treatment can be commenced. Their management will depend on the diagnosis, combining direct management of the ulcer as well as management of patient factors. Other chronic wounds commonly observed in practice include pressure wounds, skin tears, atypical leg ulcers. OBJECTIVE: This paper will outline a simple way to manage people with chronic ulcers. CONCLUSION: Conclusion The prevalence of chronic wounds is expected to rise given that people are living long

Interventions for Mooren's ulcer.

BACKGROUND: Mooren's ulcer is a chronic, painful peripheral ulcer of the cornea. Its cause is unknown but it can or will lead to loss of vision if untreated. Severe pain is common in patients with Mooren's ulcer and the eye(s) may be intensely reddened, inflamed and photophobic, with tearing. The disease is rare in the northern hemisphere but more common in southern and central Africa, China and the Indian subcontinent. There are a number of treatments used such as anti-inflammatory drugs (steroidal and non-steroidal), cytotoxic drugs (topical and systemic), conjunctivectomy and cornea debride

[Prevention of leg ulcer].

Lower leg ulcers is the most common form of ulceration of the lower extremities. The prevalence of leg ulcer varies among studies from 0.1% to 0.6%. In the majority of studies, 1% of the population develop leg ulcer at least once in lifetime. The prevalence is higher in elderly people. There are several hypotheses used to explain the pathophysiological steps leading from the popliteal venous hypertension in value. Currently, the treatment of leg ulcer relies on due knowledge of ulcer pathophysiology and making an accurate diagnosis. Venous disease has a significant impact on quality of life an

[Solitary rectal ulcer syndrome].

Solitary rectal ulcer syndrome (SRUS) is a chronic, benign, polymorphic disease of the rectum, the final diagnosis of which is based on histopathologic criteria. Microscopic examination shows glandular changes, oedema and obliteration of the normal architecture in the region of the lamina propria, with muslce fibre penetrating into lamina. Although SRUS pathogenesis is bound up with defecation disorder, it still remains unclear. Disease symptoms are nonspecific--in most cases defecation disorders appear (incomplete defecation, blood and mucus in stool). In some patients emotional disorders can
