PROBLEM: Regional difference in the inflammatory response in vasectomized (VAX) epididymis remains unraveled.
METHOD OF STUDY: Epididymal expression of interleukin 1α (IL1α), IL1β, IL1 receptor antagonist (IL1ra), IL1 receptor 1 (IL1R1), IL6, IL10, tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), and transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) was examined in bilateral VAX mice by real-time RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry.

Two male marmosets underwent vasectomy without complications. Azoospermia was confirmed by computer-assisted semen analysis (CASA) 5 weeks later. Both were co-housed with embryo transfer recipient females 6 weeks after surgery. Vasectomy may be accompanied by post-vasectomy semen analysis such as CASA, to ensure safe and reliable sterilization for research and captive breeding management in marmosets.

We present a case of a 38-year-old man with a unilateral intra-abdominal testicle and undesired fertility in whom orchiectomy and contralateral vasectomy were performed laparoscopically. Urologists have been using diagnostic laparoscopy in patients with nonpalpable testes to plan the definitive procedure when the testicle is present, and to avoid laparotomy in cases of testicular absence. This case of laparoscopic orchiectomy and vasectomy demonstrates that operative laparoscopy allows another subset of patients with cryptorchidism to avoid open laparotomy.
