QUANTITATIVE MORPHOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF THE STUDY OF THE FEATURES OF THE REMODELING OF THE HEMOMICROCIRCULATORY CHANNEL OF THE TESTICLES UNDER THE ACTION OF ALUMINUM CHLORIDE ON THE BODY.

OBJECTIVE: The aim: To conduct a morphometric analysis of the features of the remodeling of vessels of the hemomicrocirculatory channel of t … 8.4%, precapillary arterioles by 19.1%, hemocapillaries by 10.1%. The diameter of the postcapillary venules of the left testicle increased by 26.3%, the venules by 26.4%, and the density of microvessels decreased by 30.0%, which indicated the deterioration of its blood supply. The degree of remodeling of microvessels in the right testis was less pronounce …

Modeling the impact of venous collapsibility on retinal oxygenation.

Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness worldwide that is characterized by progressive and irreversible vision loss. In addition to elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), impairments in retinal blood flow and oxygen (O2) metabolism contribute to the pathophysiology of glaucoma. In this study, a theoretical model of the retinal vasculature is expanded to allow for venous collapsibility. The model also accounts for mechanistic flow regulation and O2 transport and is used to predict retinal blood flow and tissue oxygenation as intraluminal pressure, O2 demand, or IOP are varied. Venules are repres…

Idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome with hepatic sinusoidal obstruction syndrome: A case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES) is classified as primary, secondary or idiopathic. Idiopathic HES (IHES) has a variable clinical presentation and may involve multiple organs causing severe damage. Hepatic sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (HSOS) is characterized by damage to the endothelial cells of the hepatic sinusoids of the hepatic venules, with occlusion of the hepatic venules, and hepatocyte necrosis. We report a case of IHES with HSOS of uncertain etiology. CASE SUMMARY: A 70-year-old male patient was admitted to our hospital with pruritus and a rash on the extremities for >…

Essential role of neutrophils in germ cell-specific apoptosis following ischemia/reperfusion injury of the mouse testis.

This study investigates the role of neutrophils in ischemia-induced aspermatogenesis in the mouse. Previous studies in the rat have demonstrated that ischemia-inducing testicular torsion followed by torsion repair and reperfusion resulted in germ cell-specific apoptosis. This was correlated with an increase in neutrophil adhesion to subtunical venules, an increase in reactive oxygen species, and increased expression of several apoptosis-associated molecules. In the present investigation, wild-type C57BL/6 mice were subjected to various degrees and duration of testicular torsion. A torsion of 7…

Occlusive venous lesions in alcoholic liver disease. A study of 200 cases.

The nature and significance of vascular lesions in alcoholic liver disease were studied in 200 autopsies. Three principal types of lesions were recognized: (a) Lymphocytic phlebitis, consisting of a chronic inflammatory cell infiltrate of the wall of terminal hepatic venules (central veins) or intercalated (sublobular) veins, was noted in 16.7% of patients with precirrhotic alcoholic hepatitis and 4.3% of patients with cirrhosis. (b) Phlebosclerosis, consisting of perivenular scarring with gradual obliteration of the lumen of terminal hepatic venules and sometimes intercalated veins was found …

Pathologic study of early manifestations of polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy and pathogenesis of choroidal neo-vascularization.

PURPOSE: To describe the histopathologic features of an early case of presumably bilateral polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) in two eyes obtained at autopsy from a patient with no prior ocular therapy. OBSERVATIONS: The choroid of both eyes at the macular and peripapillary regions was greatly thickened with dilated, thin walled choroidal venules intertwining with arteriosclerotic arterioles in the Sattler's layer of the choroidal vasculature. At the temporal and nasal equatorial regions of both eyes many of these congested venular channels abruptly disappeared and were replaced by loose…

Multiple perforations along the entire colon as a complication of intestinal Behcet's disease: a rare case.

Colonic complications of Behcet's disease due to intestinal involvement are rarely reported in the literature. Ulcers are the most frequently seen intestinal complications that cause bleeding and perforation predominantly in the ileocecal region. In this article, we report a patient with Behcet's disease who presented with multiple perforations along the entire colon. Postoperative histopathological examination revealed multiple ulcers containing lymphocytic infiltrations in the small peripheral and submucosal venules. Intimal thickening and fresh intraluminal fibrin thrombosis were also seen …

Hepatic veno-occlusive disease related to Gynura segetum: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Hepatic veno-occlusive disease (HVOD), as known as hepatic sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (HSOS), is an obliterative venulitis of the terminal hepatic venules, which is responsible for considerable mortality. The potential mechanism is destruction of hepatic sinusoidal endothelial cells (SEC), with sloughing and downstream occlusion of terminal hepatic venules. Here, we report a case of HVOD who have a history of ingestion of Gynura segetum for 1 month. The patient presents for abdominal pain and distension. He was diagnosed for HVOD using computerized tomography (CT) and ultras…

Focal veno-occlusive lesions following metastasis of cancer in the liver with special reference to obstruction of lymphatics in hepatic veins.

Focal veno-occlusive lesions and congestion of the liver are found frequently at autopsy in patients with metastatic carcinoma in the liver. In 6 cases, intimal proliferation of loose connective tissue with dilatation of lymphatic capillaries was seen continuously from the terminal hepatic venule to the hepatic vein, and cancer cells were found only in lymphatic capillaries in the wall of the hepatic vein. In 7 cases, cancer cells infiltrated directly into the adventitia of the sublobular vein and intimal proliferation of loose connective tissue with or without formation of recent thrombi was

Retinal arterial-venous pulse delay: a new specific marker for a carotid-cavernous fistula.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to describe ocular blood flow changes in eyes affected by a carotid-cavernous fistula (CCF) using laser speckle flowgraphy. We hypothesized that imaging blood flow velocity waveforms in the retinal arterioles and venules simultaneously would reveal specific characteristics of an arteriovenous (AV) connection. DESIGN: The study was an observational case series, with a retrospective case-control analysis. METHODS: Five patients with a CCF underwent measurement of ocular blood flow using laser speckle flowgraphy. The blood flow was compared retrospectively …

A case of hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (Rendu-Osler-Weber's disease) with dystrophic calcinosis cutis and retinal lesions.

A 65-year-old Japanese female developed a nodule on the distal interphalangealjoint of her right thumb. She also had multiple telangiectasias on her face, oral mucosa, tongue, nasal mucosa and upper extremities. A lip biopsy showed irregularly dilated capillaries and venules lined by flat endothelial cells. The nodule in the right thumb was resected. Histopathology revealed calcium deposits in the dermis. This case was diagnosed as dystrophic calcinosis cutis within hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia. Ophthalmologic examination showed bilateral retinal vascular lesions with dilated and tort…

Classification and management of hereditary retinal angiomas.

Two distinct types of retinal angiomas are currently recognized. Capillary hemangiomas occur most characteristically as part of the von Hippel-Lindau syndrome. The retinal capillary hemangiomas typically appear as globular red-orange tumors with dilated and tortuous afferent arterioles and efferent venules. Cavernous hemangiomas typically appear as grape-like clusters of dilated vascular sacs without pronounced alteration in the adjacent arterioles and venules. The spectrum of clinical features of these two types of hemangiomatosis and current approaches to management of patients with these di…

Platelet aggregability in microvascular haemostasis and the effect of local inflammation.

The effects on haemostatic plug formation and individual vessel platelet aggregability of granulocytopenia, prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) and indomethacin were studied in microvessels of the rabbit mesentery. Granulocytopenia was found to have no effect. Indomethacin abolished the differences between arterioles and venules in haemostatic plug formation time and stability as well as individual vessel platelet aggregability. PGE1 significantly inhibited haemostasis and also counteracted indomethacine. It is concluded that the haemostatic differences normally seen between arterioles and venules can be …

Rapidly fatal respiratory failure and angioimmunoblastic lymphadenopathy: possible contributions of immunoblastic leukaemia, chemotherapy, and multiple antibodies directed against mature blood cells.

A patient with angioimmunoblastic lymphadenopathy, immunoblastic leukaemia, pulmonary immunoblastic infiltration, and multiple antihaemocytic antibodies in his serum deteriorated rapidly after chemotherapy due to severe progressive respiratory of dysfunction. The haematological and immunological changes that accompanied this are described and discussed in the light of the pulmonary changes observed at necropsy of pulmonary oedema, fibrinous thrombi within venules, and immunoblastic infiltration of these thrombi and the venule walls. A pathophysiological mechanism is postulated in an attempt to…

Microvascular regulatory role and increased expression of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor type 2 in experimental gingivitis.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to investigate the possible microvascular regulatory role of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor type 2 (VEGFR2) in experimental gingivitis in rats. BACKGROUND: Our previous results demonstrated that functionally active VEGFR2s are located in the venules of rat gingiva. While there is no remarkable endogenous gingival VEGF production under normal circumstances, exogenous VEGF, via VEGFR2, shows venodilatory effects. We assumed that VEGF plays an important role in vasoregulatory processes (vasodilation, increased permeability, angiogenesis) o…
