WORD LEARNING IN APHASIA: TREATMENT IMPLICATIONS AND STRUCTURAL CONNECTIVITY ANALYSES.

OBJECTIVE: Of current interest in aphasia research is the relevance of what we can learn from studying word learning ability in aphasia. In a preliminary study, we addressed two issues related to the novel word learning ability of individuals with aphasia. First, as word learning engages large-scale cognitive-linguistic systems (language skills, verbal short-term memory (STM), other memory and executive functions), we probed whether novel word learning practice in three people with aphasia could stimulate these language-related systems. Second, as lesion correlates affecting word learning in a

Learning and memory performance following acute intranasal insulin administration in abstinent smokers.

The highest incidence of relapse to smoking occurs within the first 2 weeks of a cessation attempt. In addition to enhanced nicotine craving … (60 IU) dose was administered in both studies and cognitive function was measured using California Verbal Learning Test-II. Intranasal insulin did not improve learning over the 5 verbal learning trials. In addition, intranasal insulin did not improve either short- or long-delay recall in either study. In summary, the one-time administration of intranasal insulin …

Language acquisition is language change.

According to the theory of Universal Grammar, the primary linguistic data guides children through an innately specified space of hypotheses. On this view, similarities between child-English and adult-German are as unsurprising as similarities between cousins who have never met. By contrast, experience-based approaches to language acquisition contend that child language matches the input, with nonadult forms being simply less articulated versions of the forms produced by adults. This paper reports several studies that provide support for the theory of Universal grammar, and resist explanation o

The relationship between cortisol and verbal memory in the early stages of Huntington's disease.

Hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis hyperactivity has been linked to learning and memory difficulties in a range of neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric conditions. In Huntington's disease (HD), both declines in learning and memory and HPA axis dysfunction are present early in the disease. However, the relationship between specific learning and memory deficits and HPA axis functioning in HD has not been examined. The aim of this study was to investigate cortisol levels in relation to verbal learning and memory in pre-diagnosed (pre-HD) participants and patients at the early stages of d…

Improving Amnesia Diagnostic Accuracy with RAVLT Single Scores and Composite Indices: Italian Normative Data.

OBJECTIVE: The Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT) is a widely used verbal memory measure that provides scores for different aspects of memory. It involves repeated auditory presentation and recall of a 15-item word list (List A) followed by presentation and recall of a distractor list (List B) and then un-cued immediate and delayed recalls (at 15 min and 1 week) of List A as well as recognition testing. Aims of this study are to provide Italian normative data for certain RAVLT Scores and Composite Indices to improve the diagnostic accuracy of the test in clinical settings and to provide…

Dynamic assessment and instructional strategies for learners who struggle to learn a foreign language.

In this paper the authors discuss how the concept of dynamic (cognitive) assessment and instruction might relate to the assessment and instruction of at-risk foreign/second language learners. They describe its relevance to a diagnostic/prescriptive approach to instruction for teaching a foreign language to students with identified dyslexia and other at-risk students. They explain how to assess learners' knowledge of the native/foreign/second language through questions and guided discovery. Examples in German and English illustrate its application to foreign/second language instruction.

Hebb repetition learning in adolescents with intellectual disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Hebb repetition learning is a form of long-term serial order learning that can occur when sequences of items in an immediate serial recall task are repeated. Repetition improves performance because of the gradual integration of serial order information from short-term memory into a more stable long-term memory trace. AIMS: The current study assessed whether adolescents with non-specific intellectual disabilities showed Hebb repetition effects, and if their magnitude was equivalent to those of children with typical development, matched for mental age. METHODS: Two immediate serial

Stimulus modality and working memory performance in Greek children with reading disabilities: additional evidence for the pictorial superiority hypothesis.

This study investigated the effects of stimulus presentation modality on working memory performance in children with reading disabilities (RD) and in typically developing children (TDC), all native speakers of Greek. It was hypothesized that the visual presentation of common objects would result in improved learning and recall performance as compared to the auditory presentation of stimuli. Twenty children, ages 10-12, diagnosed with RD were matched to 20 TDC age peers. The experimental tasks implemented a multitrial verbal learning paradigm incorporating three modalities: auditory, visual, an…

Acquired learning disability for reading after left temporal lobe damage in childhood.

A 6-year-old boy developed hemorrhage in the left temporal lobe and subsequently underwent left temporal lobectomy. Afterwards, he was completely unable to learn to read or write. Psychological tests showed impairment in verbal learning and memory, with right ear and right visual field superiority in verbal perception. A Wada test showed no aphasia after right carotid injection. We conclude that damage to the speech-dominant temporal lobe resulted in the inability to learn to read or write. Despite the lesion, speech remained strongly lateralized to the left hemisphere, accounting for the righ…

Effects of acute cardiovascular exercise and coordinative motor activity on verbal functions and attention.

Language is a cognitive domain essential for communication; however, its responsiveness to acute physical exercise or activity is unexplored. This quasi-randomized trial examined the effects of different intervention modalities on verbal functions and attention. Ninety-eight participants were assigned to high-intensity interval training (HIIT), coordinatively demanding motor activity (COOR), or a sedentary control group (CG). A pre-post design with a 24-hour follow-up assessed semantic (VFsem) and category-switching verbal fluency (VFsw), verbal learning, and attention. No group × time effects…

Exploring Cues of Reciprocity in Third-Party Word Learning.

This study examined how toddlers learn novel words by observing two adults interact in third-party contexts. Specifically, we examined whether toddlers show stronger evidence of selective referent identification for labeled objects in third-party contexts and how word learning may be supported by cues of reciprocity between adult interlocutors, including physical exchange of the object, verbal exchange about the object, and/or the adult listener's response to the information provided. Toddlers (n = 64, Mage = 29.9 mos., SD = 1.7 mos) were assigned to one of four conditions: Object Exchange + A
