As sanctions for those convicted of sex offenses have increased over recent years, the risk for reoffense presented by social isolation increases. We surveyed 884 Vermont (VT) tobacco smokers by random digit dialing to determine past and future use of treatment. Among those who had recently attempted to quit, 61% had ever used a treatment, 21% had ever used a psychosocial treatment, and 57% had used a medication. To determine the relation between breast self-examination and survival of breast cancer patients, the authors studied 1004 newly diagnosed invasive breast cancer patients in Vermont general hospitals from 1 July 1975 to 31 December 1982. The records of 3920 patients (2068 females, 1852 males) entering a model family practice unit between 1975 and 1978 have been analyzed. Eleven percent of males and 9.5% of females reported an episode of low-back pain during that 3-year interval. The complaint of medically reported low-back pain was significantly related to occupational factors such as truck driving (p < 0.001), lifting, carrying, pulling, pushing, and twisting (P < 0.001 for all variables) as well as nondriving vibrational exposure (P < 0.001). The trends in skiing injuries showed a decrease during a study conducted over six seasons, 1972 to 1978, at a Vermont ski resort. Over 11,000 interviews were conducted and nearly 1,000 control skiers were evaluated. The injuries totaled 1,711 in 407,600 skier days. Upper body injuries (pelvis, trunk, neck, head, and upper extremities) totaled 713 (42%) and lower extremity injuries totaled 998 (58%). The present investigation evaluated anxious and fearful responding to bodily sensations as a function of panic disorder (PD) and smoking status. Participants completed a voluntary hyperventilation procedure that elicits panic-relevant bodily sensations. Psychophysiological data were collected throughout the study procedures. Approximately 3000 people in Bennington, Vermont, 19% of the population, had a diarrheal illness during the first and second weeks of June 1978. Persons affected reported abdominal cramps (86%), diarrhea (82%), malaise (73%), and headache (47%). The mean duration of illness was 4.6 days. STUDY OBJECTIVES: This study explored inmates' sleep at two detention facilities in northern New England.
METHODS: We randomly distributed a sleep/demographic questionnaire and the insomnia severity index (ISI) to 140 (35%) inmates at a Vermont (VT) state prison and a New Hampshire (NH) county jail. We also conducted brief semistructured interviews with 23 inmates to explore their sleep experience while incarcerated.
