Stability of anterior open bite treatment with bonded spurs associated with high-pull chincup.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the stability of anterior open bite (AOB) treatment with bonded spurs associated with high-pull chincup (BS/HPCC). METHODS: The experimental group consisted of 25 Class I AOB patients (15 female, 10 male) treated with BS/HPCC for 1 year. Cephalograms were analysed at pre-treatment (T1), post-treatment (T2) and at the 3-year post-treatment (T3) stage with the patients mean ages of 8.10, 9.14 and 12.18 years, respectively. The control group consisted of 23 subjects (13 female, 10 male) with normal occlusion, with comparable ages at the 3 stages (8.45, 9.45 and 12.50 years

Early prosthetic treatment of patients with ectodermal dysplasia: a clinical report.

Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia is a hereditary disorder of ectodermal origin. The early orthodontic treatment of 2 young boys suffering from hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia with partial maxillary and complete mandibular anodontia of the primary dentition is described. Both were treated with removable maxillary partial and mandibular complete dentures with individualized occlusion and age-appropriate artificial teeth. The results were significant improvements in speech, masticatory function, and facial esthetics, contributing to the development of normal dietary habits, and the improved an

Prosthodontic management of older severe hypodontia patients in general dental practice: a case series.

Although a detailed understanding of the etiology of hypodontia is lacking, there is a need for awareness among dental professionals of the social and psychological consequences of severe hypodontia, as well as knowledge of those affected by hypodontia have ongoing dental treatment needs. Although, there may be a need for immediate referral of children to different specialists for optimal multidisciplinary treatment planning, most older patients with severe hypodontia can be treated by general practitioners. Practitioners therefore need to be aware of the ramifications of the condition and be

Improving the delivery of a fixed bridge.

Force loading of dental prosthesis is generally a guessing game played by the operator with the patient. Relying on a patient is comfort level to adjust occlusion is now being replaced by sound force information provided by the T Scan II. Proper use of the T Scan II when installing a segmental fixed prosthesis gives a more precise, comprehensive occlusion. Porcelain surfaces, solder joints, and the underlying abutment teeth can now be loaded with low-to-moderate forces because the operator can fine-tune the occlusal forces precisely. With proper force loading, greater material and prosthesis l

The hollow denture: an alternative treatment for atrophic maxillae.

This technique is an adaptation of the double-flask technique that is well-known for the fabrication of the hollow bulb portion of a maxillary obturator. It can be used only for patients with both an atrophic maxillary alveolar ridge and a greater than usual interocclusal distance. Anything less will not permit fabrication of a hollow denture.

The behaviour of the maxilla in vertical movements after Le Fort I osteotomy.

In 15 cases of ordinary Le Fort I osteotomy with simultaneous vertical displacement, the behaviour of the maxilla in respect to vertical movement was examined. It was observed that out of 12 maxilla which had been tilted downwards, 10 moved upwards again. One maxilla remained stable and another one moved further downwards. Of 3 cases with upward movement, two remained stable whereas one moved further upwards. Therefore, the authors conclude that the downward displacement especially is unstable and that one has either to overcorrect or search for possibilities of stabilization other than wiring

Growth of the pharynx and its physiologic implications.

The bony nasopharynx increases its capacity predominantly by means of vertical development. Analogous to the facial structures is an expression of some somatotopic features that give rise to a higher and more shallow pharyngeal dimension in the dolichocephalic growth pattern. The nasopharynx's ultimate patency, however, depends on the growth and relative size of the soft tissues that line the skeletal boundaries. A decreased patency of the oropharyngeal airway can induce some postural adaptations, which secure a constant sagittal dimension at that level. However, at a certain critical point, p

Medial canthal region as an external reference point in orthognathic surgery.

PURPOSE: The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the effectiveness of using the medial canthal region (MCR) as an external reference point to determine the vertical dimension during maxillary repositioning as planned in model surgery and predictive tracing. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The analyzed group consisted of 43 consecutive patients who underwent maxillary or bimaxillary orthognathic surgery. Before downfracture, the vertical height was established from the distance of the MCR to the incisal edge of the right upper central incisor (UCI). The vertical dimension was obtained with freque

[Correlation of Vertical Dentoalveolar Heights with Palatal Plane Inclination in Adults with Different Vertical Facial Patterns].

INTRODUCTION: Various studies showed inconsistent and different results regarding the correlation between open bites and palate planes whether normal or abnormal. This study had for objective to investigate the correlation between dentoalveolar heights and palatal plane inclination in different vertical facial patterns. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 120 lateral cephalometric radiographs (60 females and 60 males) were selected from the archives of the Faculty of Dentistry, Beirut Arab University. The sample consisted of three equal groups: hypodivergent (SN/MP<27°), normodivergent (SN/MP=27°-37°) and

Skeletodental patterns in patients with multiple congenitally missing teeth.

Congenitally missing teeth (CMT) are a relatively frequent phenomenon. In severe cases of multiple CMT, the skeletodental pattern can be unique. However, the characteristics of this pattern are still controversial. Thus, it was our aim to evaluate the skeletodental patterns of patients with multiple CMT and compare them with norms. Lateral cephalograms of 115 subjects with at least 3 CMT, of at least 2 different tooth groups (excluding third molars), were analyzed. The measurements were compared with classical and Israeli norms. Differentiation between anterior and posterior lack of teeth was

Oral rehabilitation of a child with primary failure of tooth eruption.

This article describes the prosthetic evaluation and treatment of a 10-year-old female patient with primary failure of tooth eruption. This case is unique in that the failure of eruption affected both the deciduous and permanent dentition in all quadrants, in the absence of any other systemic abnormalities. After diagnostic articulation and a thorough discussion of the treatment with the patient and her parents, complete maxillary and mandibular overdentures were fabricated. The process followed with this preadolescent patient to ensure maximum compliance, success, and encouragement toward a p

Radiographic evaluation of regenerated bone following poly(lactic-co-glycolic) acid/hydroxyapatite and deproteinized bovine bone graft in sinus lifting.

Although numerous biomaterials are used for maxillary sinus-lift surgery, the ideal material for such procedures has not yet been identified. Both heterologous and alloplastic bone substitutes have a solely osteoconductive effect and lack the osteoinductive properties of the bone morphogenetic proteins typical of autologous bone. Our group assessed a new alloplastic graft material, poly(lactic-co-glycolic) acid/hydroxyapatite (PLGA/HA), implanted in a human model of maxillary sinus-lift surgery. For this prospective, random, double-blind trial, we used deproteinized bovine bone (DBB) as the co

Restoring function and esthetics in a patient with amelogenesis imperfecta: a case report.

Amelogenesis imperfecta is a hereditary disorder that affects enamel on primary and permanent teeth. It is a rare dental disease but represents a major restorative challenge for the dentist. A 14-year-old boy presented with sensitive, discolored, and mutilated teeth and a decreased vertical dimension of occlusion. The aim of treatment was to reduce dental sensitivity, to restore esthetics, and to correct the vertical dimension of occlusion. To modify the occlusion, and to protect the dentin from chemical and thermal attacks, nickel-chrome onlays were placed on the molars. To improve the esthet
