Malignant melanoma presenting as sudden onset of complete hearing loss.

The authors describe a rare case of rapidly progressive bilateral hearing loss associated with carcinomatous meningitis secondary to a primary malignant melanoma of the lower limb 6 years previously. Carcinomatous meningitis is a relatively rare diagnosis, with the involvement of the eighth cranial nerve being present in only a small proportion of patients. Diagnosis relies on clinical suspicion (when multiple cranial nerve lesions occur), magnetic resonance imaging, and cerebrospinal fluid cytology.

Pancreatic adenocarcinoma presenting with sudden onset bilateral deafness secondary to metastatic leptomeningeal infiltration.

Deafness is a very common problem in older persons. We present a case of metastatic adenocarcinoma of the pancreas with deafness being the patient's only reason for seeking medical attention. The patient had bilateral vestibulocochlear nerve palsies with associated lower motor neurone facial nerve palsies and a bulbar palsy. Magnetic resonance imaging of his brain was unremarkable. It was only on post-mortem histology that tumour infiltrating the leptomeninges was demonstrated. Leptomeningeal metastases are rarely associated with adenocarcinoma of the pancreas. A review of the literature revea…

A unique association of bifacial weakness, paresthesia and vestibulocochlear neuritis as post-COVID-19 manifestation in pregnant women: a case report.

SARS-CoV-2 is an infection due to a novel virus belonging to the coronavirus family. Since December 2019, first human cases of COVID-19 have been identified in Wuhan (China) and rapidly has been progressed to a global pandemic declared by the world health organization (WHO) on March 11th 2020. The major complication of COVID-19, is pneumonia, but other presentations like cardiovascular and neurological complications have been reported. Herein, we report a first case of pregnant women presented with bifacial weakness and paraesthesia (BFP) associated to a vestibulocochlear neuritis as post-COVI

A comprehensive review with potential significance during skull base and neck operations, Part II: glossopharyngeal, vagus, accessory, and hypoglossal nerves and cervical spinal nerves 1-4.

Knowledge of the possible neural interconnections found between the lower cranial and upper cervical nerves may prove useful to surgeons who … w is organized into two parts. Part I discusses the anastomoses between the trigeminal, facial, and vestibulocochlear nerves or their branches and other nerve trunks or branches in the vicinity. Part II deals with the anastomoses between the glossopharyngeal, vagus, accessory and hypoglossal nerves and their branches or between these nerves and the first four cervical sp …

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma recurrence presenting as multiple, progressive cranial neuropathies.

A 58-year-old man with a history of rheumatoid arthritis and stage IV diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, in complete remission with no evidence of residual disease on positron emission tomography/CT after completing six cycles of rituximab, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine and prednisone chemotherapy, presented with acute onset of dysphagia to solids and liquids. On further evaluation, his dysphagia was attributed to a vagus nerve palsy, and later during his admission, he developed rapidly progressing left facial and vestibulocochlear nerve palsies. Imaging studies displayed pathological…

Bilateral vidian nerve schwannomas associated with facial palsy. Case report and review of the literature.

Intracranial schwannomas are relatively common benign tumors arising from Schwann cells. Among the cranial nerves, the vestibular division of the vestibulocochlear nerve is the site most commonly affected by these lesions, followed by the trigeminal nerve. The authors report a case of bilateral schwannomas arising from both of the pterygoid canals. A 13-year-old girl presented with intermittent headaches and left-sided facial palsy. Preoperative computerized tomography scans and magnetic resonance images revealed nonenhancing round masses within the bilateral vidian canals, bone erosion, and s…

[Overview: diagnosis of vestibular syndromes].

Vestibular syndromes are one of the commonest paroxysmal disorders in our clinical practice. These consist of vertigo, oculomotor abnormalities (nystagmus), postural changes and nausea/vomiting. Vertigo can be classified as real vertigo and dizziness, based upon the presence of clinical rotatory perception. In order to diagnose a responsible lesion for various central and peripheral vestibular syndromes, we have to carefully observe nystagmus in patients with acute vertigo. Gaze-evoked nystagmus is the most important nystagmus in patients with the central vestibular syndromes. The finding is e
